I'm just a hobbyist and only done a half dozen cars. I've used this method but saw a guy use a sharpie (on lighter colors). It's like a guide coat from the start & I found it much easier to control how much of the surrounding area gets sanded. Since I only worked on my own cars (so kept them for several years) I found that the life of the clear was sometimes shortened because it was thinner than the suggested build after fixing some of the runs. Yours sure did come out nice! Thanks for sharing the tip!

The beauty of this system Gabe is twofold. The putty provides you with a built in guidecoat. As long as there still is putty you just keep sanding. Secondly the ramps the putty puts on both sides of the run prevent you from undercutting the sag. Remember the clear that formed the run came from somewhere. That somewhere is right above the run where the clear is actually thinner than it should be. I've used this system for years and it works better than any other method that I know of.

I’ve found that using kombi putty works better than metal glaze. It doesn’t heat up as it dries which tends to etch fresh clear. Also it wet sands easier.

I like that method I learned it originally on the Sherwin Williams channel. It's a smart way to sand down a high run without sanding through the thinner parts of the coats. Also I dont remember you saying that you used a spot puddy in order to sand that out. It doesn't work as well with regular bondo. If you need the proper instructions look up Shewin Williams clear coat run removal. Good job guys you just proved you dont always have to reshoot a part because of a huge run...

This process works for sure. One issue is that if you follow this process you will have a serious flat section after its polished, You would use the same method if you planed to sand the entire fender down to re-clear. in most cases its difficult to block out a run perfectly, this is the best method if your only polishing or re-clearing.

This is the method i use most! Always works like a charm, by not letting you dig into the area surrounding the run. Never had it fail me yet!
@splash5974
@splash5974 6 жыл бұрын
Also To save some time, instead of waiting a few days to sand the run, open the top of the run up the first day. Dont go crazy on it, just cut into the top of the run and it will help allow the solvents out a bit quicker...Then you can attack it the next day without fear of it rolling on you! Try it next time, and let me know if it saves you some time. Cheers

Anyone knows why when I buff a black car I’m getting swirl marks? And not sanding swirl marks from the DA or sand paper but from the foam pad like if you can tell it was buffed? I’m only using 1200 and 2000 could that be why?

@arestheeurodobie9207
@arestheeurodobie9207 5 жыл бұрын
It can be few things what cause sags/runs , your paint gun is on wrong setup, or you laying your paint or clear too heavy and from too close. It also can be if your mixture isnt right , if u use more reducer it also can make it run as well . Make sure your PSI on your compressor is not higher that 50/55 or if your compressor is a big guy then set it between 15/25 psi. I hope I could help
@maxie9506
@maxie9506 5 жыл бұрын
@@arestheeurodobie9207 thank you so much. Spray gun question: What if your spray gun is an hlvp gun but the cfm or you compressor is les than 5. Can I compensate using a lower psi or is the gun specifically designed to operate on a compressor that's more than 10?
@arestheeurodobie9207
@arestheeurodobie9207 5 жыл бұрын
typical spray gun will require low pressure, and HIGH volume, FAR more than any standard compressor yields. This one, for example, requires between 0-70 PSI, but 12 CFM. 12 CFM is far more than ANY standard compressor provides, not even in bursts. Or, this one, requires 10-14CFM .
@arestheeurodobie9207
@arestheeurodobie9207 5 жыл бұрын
@@maxie9506 now here is what I van tell you , HVLP spray guns are awesome more pros than cons with them , like pros: high transfer rate , 60-80% transfer rate (compare to a commercial guns whitch are usually not more that 38% ). Low over spray , reduced materials, low emission, uses low pressure to atomizer materials while putting out high volume , but they aren't perfect some of the cons: are Thick paint , more $$$, needs more volume. But in overall you have a beautiful gun :)
