I've also used dry erase markers for the same purpose. Trace over the permanent marker, let set a few seconds, then wipe off

Great tip. What I found works fast use a whiteboard marker on top of the permanent marker mark, wipe off with a rag, then following up alcohol on the rag. Sometimes you may need to do it a couple of times. If it is really old it may not all come off but it will be faded, then I would use your toothpaste soda mixture.

Came off without even needing to use the eraser, I used isopropyl alcohol 70%, toothpaste, baking soda, toothbrush and napkin for permanent marker that was on hard plastic for 12 years, God bless you mate thanks for the helpful advice 👍 will be using this method for similar situations envolving hard plastics and permanent marker

Actually alchohol is the main ingredient in sharpies thus when you wipe the sharpie ink with rubbing alcohol, you dilute the sharpies ink and you can wipe it off

Teacher here- hair spray works great but my go to is to write over it with Expo marker and erase. The issue sometimes is that the plastic will turn the color of the marker being removed. Then I use alcohol on a cotton ball and usually that helps.

@PrimeTimeTreasureHunter thanks for the tip, I tried it out and it worked pretty well. I didn't have any baking soda, so I just used toothpaste on its own. I tried using some other methods and I found that using lotion based insect repellent worked even faster, with less elbow grease. I just put a dab of it on the device and gently scrubbed with the toothbrush. Full disclosure, it was the same toothbrush that had the toothpaste on it. So I don't know if it was the insect repellent lotion on its own or if it was the combination of the repellent and the toothpaste. What I used: - Ultrathon insect repellent lotion (34.34% DEET) - Colgate Cavity Protection (0.76% Sodium Monofluorophosphate (0.15% w/v fluoride ion))

I just had very good luck with the spray cleaner LA's Totally Awesome from the local dollar store. My sister suggested it. That and a plastic brush to agitate it worked very well.

I have a Werner 6 ft orange colored ladder that has had permanent marker on it for 10 years. Tried 91% isopropyl alcohol with magic eraser, tried. The toothpaste/ baking soda paste with both the pink eraser as well as dry eraser and scrubbing pad, no go. Also just tried using graffiti remover gel and spray and so far it's faded but it will not come all the way off. Any other ideas other than getting out the sandpaper?

Great tip. You are awesome resource for resellers. If you use toothpaste with hydrogen peroxide , you add the extra bleaching power of the hydrogen peroxide. Personally, I start with magic eraser.

Great tip. Any advice on permanent marker on canvas? I have a JanSport Crimson Tide backpack in great condition, but they wrote the persons name on the inside lining, so when you open it up, it's the 1st thing you see. I thought about getting a similar colored iron-on patch to cover it up. But, that's not original to the backpack.

Nail polish remover takes sharpie off of clothes. Pour it on the sharpie, rub with a white washcloth, if needed do this a few times, then rinse (so the nail polish remover doesn't weaken cloth fibers) then wash. Washing the fabric will get it out even if the sharpie isn't all gone with the nail polish remover. Check that it's gone before drying it in a dryer - that will set any stain and make it harder to remove. Hope this helps!

Scribble through the existing black marker with a new black marker. Wipe off with a paper towel. Presto. No more black marker initials. I use a typical Sharpie black marker to remove Sharpie black marker ink and not a dry erase marker and it works 100% of the time. How do I know? Because I’ve done this practice for over 20 years.

No, it has to be a dry erase marker and it does not always work so cleanly. It’s best on glossy plastic.
