Have you ever needed to swap a freehub body over? When did you last service your bike hub?

I once had the pawls on a freehub become permanently engaged during a race. It was quite interesting to have a fixed gear for about 50miles

The FH body on my XC started to get some play last autumn, I had to disassemble it to adjust the play. I noticed this when I wanted to service the hubs, I also noticed back then my QR front axle had a broken axle shaft

Every bike I’ve ever owned came with HG and it just works. SRAM was kind enough to make a 12 speed Eagle cassette for HG, so I can run X01 without having to replace the driver.

DT Swiss ratchet hubs are worth their price purely because they don't have the pawls and tiny springs. The ratchet is an excellent system that's super simple to take apart, service and reassemble. Incredibly robust, too.

Now there are multiple ring drive hubs out there to try besides DT tho. I’m on ERASE MTB hubs and i love them. Titanium free hub body on the rear 7075 AL hubshell and stainless steel ratchets. Best part is front and rear hub costs less together than one DT 240 or other high end hub. Even with me importing them from Belgium to the US!

I service my hubs once or twice a year and I have tried specific grease and oil but i prefer to use just regular dry lube because it doesn't gunk up as much and I don't notice any performance loss ether.

Some corrections: Shimano introduced the Hyperglide freehub in 1989 on the Dura-Ace road group. Previous Shimano freehubs were Uniglide, where the small cog threaded onto the FHB. For awhile in the early 90s, FHBs were designed to accept both UG and HG cassettes. Hyperglide FHBs have been different lengths over the years, depending on how many speeds and which type of cassette you're using. So, i don't know what you mean about HG being around since the 1970s lol

You can buy freehub grease but if you want a cheap solution or don't want to buy another product, you can add the smallest amount of your normal grease on the ratchets and a few drops of wet lube on to the pawls. When it mixes it will end up with a viscosity somewhere in the middle and it will keep the springs running freely. I have also done this trick with bottom bracket bearings for even less friction for a race situation, but it does mean service intervals are more frequent.

im never going to use the bag technique, but I am going to scream why didn't I use the bag technique as the spring shoots across the room!!! Fun fact Stan's Neo hubs use a different inner spacer between their aluminum and steel freehub bodies, and when you use the wrong one, either way, the freehub locks solid. Especially good to know when you setup a new cassette and freehub at your house, then take it to your girlfriends house for a ride and don't bring the spacer for the aluminum one or your cassette tool.😢🤦♂️

Recently I had my I9 Hydra XD paws wear out after only approximately 100 miles. Given it’s an e-bike, was wondering if anyone else has had this issue with the I9 Hydra paws? I ordered another set of paws, but really have a problem with such a short term with the paws from I9. I have them on my other rig which is a I9 Torch setup, but never have had any issues there, or with DT SWISS. Wondering if this is normal wear and something to be aware of? Should I keep a spare set handy. 🤔

People deliberately remove all grease to get their hubs as loud as possible. It won't affect function at all but maybe slightly lessen the hub's life span, especially with lightweight aluminum bodies like Stans hubs, though they may have changed their design in the last few years.

Ironic SRAM went back to threading for the XD/XDR. That really drives up manufacturing costs, the cassettes are just too expensive. Shimano's Microspline will win out in the end because of the manufacturing cost advantage.
