Just followed your excellent video and was able to replace my battery. The only issue: the one in the car (original 2010 battery) was a lead acid one rated at 90 Ah. One I received from BMW dealer is a 92 Ah AGM. I tried coding it but was not showing the 92 Ah option. So I only registered the battery using BimmerLink. So far so good.

Great video and excellent tips. Odyssey batteries are still made in the USA and use 99.9 percent pure lead, and are designed to last 10 years. I would also install a Pulse Tech PowerPulse passive desulfator on your battery, Pulsetech claims that their patented frequency can extend battery life up to three times. I have been using a PowerPulse on my 2001 BMW 530i battery for the past 3 years, and it never has an issue starting even though I only drive 25 miles a week. I also just desulfated a Duralast Gold BMW battery on my other car that I let sit for a year disconnected and it tested at 11.2 volts and was dead. I charged it for 14 hours with a Exide automatic 6 amp charger and it still would not crank over my other BMW. I attached the PowerPulse on the battery for a week, and charged it with a 1 amp manual charger for 72 hours and it is now again starting my car . Heavily sulfated batteries can take a month or longer to desulfate. Noco Genius 5 and 10 and Ctek battery chargers have a repair mode, but I believe they use voltage spikes to desulfate a battery.

If you connect a trickle charger to the charging post under the hood then change your battery, does that help in maintaining power to the computer and negate registering the new battery? I have a 2012 X5 35d Thanks

It worked for me but not at the first attempt ! The first time I installed a Costco battery (around $170) and failed to register it using a Foxwell NT530. I figured the car recognized that an aftermarket battery was being installed and refused it. I returned the Costco battery and purchased an original BMW battery from the closest BMW dealership (my 2013 X5 N55 uses the 950 battery, which costs around $270) and tried to register it following exactly the same steps as shown in the video and the Foxwell scanner still wasn’t able to register the new battery. After doing some research I read a forum where a guy says that you need to register the new battery with the engine turned off. You have to inset the key and press the start button once (without pressing the pedal). When following this the Foxwell NT530 registered the battery straight away. Now I wonder if it could have registered the Costco battery following the same steps. Not sure since aftermarket batteries don’t have the battery code that needs to be entered.

Seems to me if you keep the vehicle powered with an external power supply during the replacement, and you replace with an original BMW battery, then you would not need to register the battery and you would not encounter any fault codes. I doubt the battery charges differently as it ages; the programming is there in case you change capacity or type of battery. I'd like to replace my battery, but I don't have a scan tool; not sure it's worth purchasing one. Good video overall though; nice work.
@BIMMERZEITT Жыл бұрын
If you own an e70 x5 it’s definitely worth buying the scan tool. You need it for access to so many modules and diagnostics. Register your battery the proper way, my .02!

You won't believe this, but I'm actually a battery engineer. Not a lead-acid expert, but I work with LiIon chemistry. Care to explain the algorithm BMW uses to adapt charging to battery age? I'd like to hear it.
@BIMMERZEITT Жыл бұрын
@@huskypup3489 just to clarify, the factory battery is AGM not lead-acid. These cars have an intelligent battery sensor “IBS” to monitor the battery state and adjust charging parameters accordingly. In short, as the battery degrades over time the ECU uses signals from the IBS to adjust charging from the alternator based on the battery condition. Assuming the battery degrades over this 7 year period, the alternator will be charging the battery at a slightly higher rate at year 7. If you place a new battery in, the system will continue charging at the elevated voltage because it thinks the old battery is still in there. That, in turn, will mature the new battery faster than necessary. Does that mean you’ll get 6 years from it instead of 7? I don’t know. But I don’t want to find out!

It sucks that you had to use a tripod to prop open the cargo floor. I had an E70 with a factory gas strut installed on this door - I think I can see in your video where the unused mount point is on the metal frame. I'm not sure exactly what year BMW stopped installing this strut, but I recall seeing it absent on a later model in the showroom and thought it was quite the cheap move of BMW - The salesperson concurred.
@BIMMERZEITT2 жыл бұрын
Good catch! It looks like BMW stopped installing that on later model e70 cars. Might have to retrofit one in from an early model now!

My 2013 has the gas strut.
@forumtyish Жыл бұрын
@@mcplutt That's interesting as 2013 was the last model year of the E70. The starting MY of 2007 and at least a couple of years in definitely had the strut too. I think it was around 2010 or 2011 when I saw the strut was missing from a showroom vehicle and the salesperson confirmed the unfortunate change in production. Based on your 2013, it sounds like BMW decided to bring it back at some point before the end of E70 production. NOTE: All the examples I refer to are US production out of Greer SC (BMW America). I can imagine how other BMW markets could have tracked differently.
