Hey Dr. Dean! Happy to see you back making videos here again! Great advice as always. I’ve been using 5W-40 in my N54 for the past 50K mi (10 yrs) and couldn’t be more pleased. Always gently bring the oil up to operating temp before pushing the engine. I replaced the turbos myself back at 81K mi, and the engine has run like new since. My E82 is a garage princess now, so only needs annual oil service, but prior to that I changed the oil every 5000-7500 mi.
@hoffmanw157Ай бұрын
BMW recommends a 5W-30 oil, which should also be used when replacing bearing shells. Otherwise, it would be more appropriate to choose a 5W-40 viscosity for mileages of over 150000 km. However, the quality of the oil is much more important than the viscosity. It should be approved by BMW (LL-04) or comply with the ACEA C3 specification. In addition, it should be a synthetic oil or at least a hydrocrack (HC synthesis) oil. The most important thing, however, is to change the oil every 15000 km / once a year and at least every 10000 km if you do a lot of short trips. The prescribed maintenance intervals of 30000 km / 2 years are pure marketing and intended for fleet managers who only see the costs during the leasing period. The engine will survive these long intervals for the first 150,000 km, after which it becomes increasingly critical.

Despite the BMW extended warranty BMW decided it was oil degradation, which is not covered by the warranty. I took a sample of the oil and sent it off for independent analysis which came back confirming there was nothing wrong with the oil, further investigation proved the engine was caked in carbon. 18 months later and with the help of the motoring ombudsman BMW had no choice other then to replace the complete engine turbos and numerous other parts, cost, just under 40k. Like the N54 or B58 they run easily over 100degrees celsius at normal daily use. S50/S54 stay under 100 degrees. Only when going on the track they will pass 100 and even maybe pass 120. The V8 S62 is the same story. The S65 and S85maybe higher. Don't have so much experience with those.

Which oil and how often should I change it for the n43 320i?
@billsimpson604Ай бұрын
ALL engines have some piston ring blowby. That, along with carbon particles in the cylinder cross hatches, contaminates the oil. So no matter what oil you use, it will get progressively less effective at friction reduction and engine deposit removal, as the hours of operation pass. So do yourself a favor and change your oil every 5,000 miles and use fully synthetic oil. I would follow his advice and avoid the 10 W in BMW engines. Always change the filter.
@rw39156 күн бұрын
10,000 miles or 15,000 miles, yikes. I start to feel uneasy once I get about 4,000 to 4,500 miles on oil, due to my short driving distances and not letting the oil get hot enough to burn-off lighter combustion products that makes it into the oil, hence thinning it. 5,000 miles seems reasonable. Oil type is not difficult, read the manual or just buy a quart of Shell/BMW Twin Power oil from the parts counter - easy! My old E46 M3 required that 10w-60 oil, but my new-to-me 2023 M4 uses 0w-30! Yes indeed, 0 weight which is like like water (not really but ya know....). For my old E46, I might let it slide to to 6,000 miles but on a turbo motor with 2x turbos no less, that's a lot of heat, mechanical shear on the oil, and BMW doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to connecting rod bearing shells so 4,000 to 5,000 seems right. I run a lot of fuel injection cleaner, 20 oz bottles of Techron, every 3rd or 4th tank in the hope of reducing the dreaded carbon build-up on the exhaust valves and port walls. It certainly helps with runnability. You know some of that washes down into oil so all the more reason to change the oil on a more frequent basis.

I know many don’t care but am at 94 miles on my xdrive n51 so should I start to use 5-w40??

Thicker oil flows more slowly, leading to increased oil pressure and higher heat levels.🤷

@@c0dex_Online thicker oil mean better lubrication at higher loads

BMW doctor it’s nice to see someone who knows their stuff 👍 Honestly the amount of people I’ve seen who use the 5w30 or go to 10w60 is crazy. I’m going to get them to watch this video now so I can save my voice as you make the points perfectly!

Most people do not read their car's manual. The service part usually goes over how there's normal operation and heavier-duty operation. The latter is usually defined by a plethora of parameters like having the car go through lots of cold starts, higher percentage of idling, city traffic, short trips, operating in dirtier air like industrial areas and whatnot. And guess what: heavy duty operations usually cut down all maintenance and service intervals by half so there you go. The extended drain intervals are also usually not of the manufacturer's making. It's a political thing that mixes the production of used engine oil together with emissions. It's a joke really. But what do you expect of a world where politicians decide on technical matters instead of real experts?

I have a 520d, 2009 ,177hp, almost 200.000mil(198760). From new to this day I use only and Only 0-30 genuine bmw (filter too),fully sintetic oil which bmw recommend it to be change on every 20.000mil, and I have never ever changed it after 7000miles(Always between 5000-7000). And even to this day it burns Zero oil and on every change its always full on maximum as it was on the day of filing it up. I always worm the engine 3-5minutes and before I shut the engine I always leave the engine to idle it for 2-÷4minutes to work. Never ever touched the engine(besides regular(before time!)service, and its still working quite and smooth. .

My M52TUB28 uses maybe a quart in 5000 miles (216K miles) M54 FWIU used lower tension rings and as they wear they get consumption issues. 40 more hp tho and fuel economy is better with the 54s

I look for the BMW LL spec on the bottle, then try to find closest to the original weight after that. 5k for all my bmws and minis, whether turbo or NA

Z4 E89 N52 change oil every 5k miles, now on 105k, runs smooth. Mobil 1 0w-40.. Has burnt about 1/2 litre when due oil change. Mainly because short 7 mile daily driver.

Interesting i put cheap oil in turbo diesel Berlingo. It dragged the turbo, wouldn't accelerate. Week later i put Mobil 1 in that, again all good.

Whatever the Manufacturer states i simply half it or every 6 months whatever arrives first, Maybe overkill but clean fresh oil is an engines lifeblood.

So I own an E36 M50 1992 325i. It has more than 100k miles on and been using 20-50. I'm placed at a high altitude place and temp is 17• celsius average all year long. Is that bad?
