Muriatic acid cut 4:1 in a 5 gallon pail will clean it up perfectly. No elbow grease other than wiping a rag over the entire piece with the muriatic solution. Once completely washed, you must rinse thoroughly and towel dry. Rust is gone in under an hour.

I do love muriatic acid for anything I can dip, and just kind of get freaked out when applying it to something like the frame. That’s just me.

Why don’t you use a rust converter like POR15 rust converter ,it will prep the surface for paint and leave a phosphoric coating that is long lasting till you paint or powdercoat your chassis .

That’s a good use case for later in the project once I’m done fabricating, but I need all this to stay in bare metal so I can build. I’m just not to that point, yet.

Maybe some metal etching primer in a can after cleaning surface to protect from rust, I think 3m makes it, buy from auto paint store.

Definitely worth painting when fab is done. There's still a fair bit of welding to do.

@@WillometMotorFab I used to weld right through that etch primer ? Maybe it was a weldable primer ? 20 years ago now ? But kept the surface rust off until you could paint the whole deal. Less work than scuffing the whole surface before paint.

You definitely can weld through either of those with MIG, but it spatters and gets messy using TIG, which is pretty much my exclusive. It actually stays really clear of rust as long as I don't sweat on it!
