David: Love the squarebody content. My adventure and time machine is my father's '78 K5 Blazer he bought new at Nehls Chevrolet in Marshall, TX. I'm worthy keeper of the Blazer now and I concoct crackhead adventures with my friends and family across the western states. Got one planned in June through the 4-corners area. We're running in the '78 and a '90 Suburban this time around. If it works out, we'd love to drop by on the way out of Texas and say hello. We're just down the way in Longview. The next adventure after that takes us to the Arctic Ocean. - Cameron Carlile

My 93 has this issue. But with an ac Condenser in front. Is the only plausible way of helping is a better Radiator. Is double or triple pass. A remote transmission & oil cooler With There own fans. a proper COLD air intake also helps a great deal. As well as long tube headers.
@WillometMotorFab9 күн бұрын
I still have my AC condenser in front of the intercooler, but have relocated the engine and trans coolers to be remove with fans. Mostly, I'm comparing this to my LB7, which has an expansive radiator exposure compared to the old square and maybe the 400 trucks like yours, too.

You mean hang a hammock from the truck to something else? Friends of mine use hammocks when hiking, but it's kind of a 2 season thing. Curious how you'd see that working.

I’ve got two suburbans, one is a 89 that I swapped a 14 bolt with grizzly locker into, I can’t find a affordable Dana 60 around me so I have a 76 8 lug 44 in the front, only on 35s so I’m not sure if I’ll have to worry about that 44 or not, I also have a 94 with a 6.5 that I’d love to build, however I’m not sure if I should dedicate all my time and funds into the square body or try to make both middle of the road off roaders, the square body does seem to have more aftermarket support then the gmt400s
@WillometMotorFab12 күн бұрын
Two suburbans sounds like a good time. Having one that's closer to stock and easy to service might give you the room to take one a little bit farther down the build path. What do you think?
@jarvislarson686418 күн бұрын
Why run a double pass and fab same side hoses when you can get a triple pass?
@WillometMotorFab17 күн бұрын
Double pass still has room in the end tanks for large oil coolers. Triple pass exists largely just to make packaging easier, which is great if fabrication isn’t in one’s skill set or budget. Most ultra4 stuff runs a dual pass.

The later 6.5 forged crankshafts make a 6.5 worthwhile and durable enough for hp increases...had a 6.2 & 6.5 the 6.2 broke crank in half at 130k...6.5 was a 97 gm crate engine it never quit on me

Awesome work I enjoy seeing different types of fabrication done. I’m a self employed welder/fabricator in the heavy equipment repair business I don’t ever get to do any of this kind of fabrication but now that I’ve been building my own rig to do exactly the things your doing with the suburban, these videos are a cool mix for me truck/car fab and bdr trips these get my wheels turning while learning.
@WillometMotorFab20 күн бұрын
I sure do appreciate you watching. Not as many folks get excited about the charger, but the mix is hugely valuable. What I learn building the car feeds the truck, and the other way around, too.

Howdy Sir, I would love to see a detailed video of how you prefer to do blending of welds. I always love seeing how others do things. I learned years ago that just saying I already know how to do that means a possible missed opportunity on learning someone else’s process which may be better than my own and have steps to make things either smoother or more efficient. Please by all means get as far into the weeds about anything you like. I love learning tips, procedures, and thought processes behind the way people work. Thank you for taking your valuable time to share!
@WillometMotorFab20 күн бұрын
Let's do it. It’s a fun one, and a rabbit hole. Depending on the tools available, there are several ways to get it done.
@farmer-jon19 күн бұрын
@ Sweet! Dykem or Sharpie would be a good contrast for demonstrating lows. If I may make a request, I would love to see an inside edge/corner. Getting an even finish without making a groove or a gouge while trying to blend the radius is a tough one for me.

The LS is set back 12.5”, making this a front mid-engine with half the engine hidden under the cowl. Being able to remove the intake without pulling the engine seemed like a thing that might be handy down the line. Let me know if y'all want to see a deep-dive into planishing and blending weld seams. I dip into the topic a little bit here, but it's a kind of a rabbit hole. I have an 86 military squarebody, I built the motor about 3 years ago. The 6.5 build was almost exactly like yours except I did not use the Harland and Sharp rockers. Did you have to do any modifications to make them work? Since my trucks build I probably put 30,000 mi on the motor, gotta love the 6.5 TD !

The 1.6 rockers are a direct fit. I used .010 headgaskets, but it wasn't necessary.

Kyle turned me on to SCS as well. I built a frame table like his and had him have a bunch of the parts through SCS. Off to the races from there. Only limiting factor for me is my own imagination and CAD skills. A person could make a living selling parts for whatever and just repackaging SCS parts. It would not take much effort at all as they do all the heavy lifting. Great service!

To go new places. See things I’ve never seen. Spend time with people I care about. Watch a sunrise on a cold morning with a hot cup of coffee. Smell the air change as the ponderosas warm in the afternoon sun. Enjoy time around the fire at the end of a long day. All the tents and gear we carry make camping more comfortable, but they aren’t the reason to get away from the city lights. They’re just the tools. Why do you get away?

After you reach a certain age (and it's different for everyone), the only answer to the question "Why did you do it that way?", provided you're not harming anyone else, is "Because I wanted to."

This is wise advice. Social feeds us a lot of good fabrication and build ideas, but also a lot of opinions masquerading as more than they actually are. Your comment makes me think about the value of trusting your instincts, yet not allowing yourself to become governed by them. Building something the way you want, thoughtfully, is almost always the right move.
