I’ve never had the nerve to do this job, might give it a go now

It's easy if you follow my instructional video

Fantastic video, thanks very much. Great that you mentioned both kit part numbers as that helped me find Sierra aftermarket kits here in Australia. UPDATE ON THE SIERRA KIT - I don't recommend anyone buys the Sierra aftermarket kit if they can get there hands on an OEM kit. The diaphragm is thinner and much more "limp" that the original OEM diaphragm, and it "crumples" along the edges during assembly because of the springs. I actually ended up putting the original OEM diaphragm back in as it looked in good condition and I've heard they are very reliable and long lasting.

Why did you service it what were the symptoms ? Thank you in advance

Hi Kirt, it comes as part of the Evinrude service kit. The parts are subject to wear, especially the lift pump's diaphragm, which can split over time. A symptom I suppose would be no fuel reaching the fuel injection pump and then either very low performance or the engine not starting. Hope this helps

Bad fuel pump causes loss of vacuum so the primer bulb on the line from fuel tank will go soft. If you have to keep squeezing the bulb to keep motor going the pump isnt working, the diaphragm could be torn, the check valves or the gaskets could be leaking. Also the filter in the fuel supply cap could have debris in it blocking fuel supply. There also could be an air leak in the pulse hose.

Thanks. Going through these issues now on a 1987 Johnson 9.9. The pump is same style and is mounted on opposite side of the engine with a single pulse line running back to the intake port. It has metal reed plates as check valves and a rubber gasket with ports for the cap instead of an inner and outer o ring. Was missing the top spring and air dome. Apparently this pump was only on the 87 to 82 electric start models however this motor is a manual start. Seems to be a better pump than those small square ones though. Good video btw...and appreciated:) Cheers from Ontario, Canada.

Thanks, really appreciated the good feedback 👍 It’s amazing how similar parts make it across a lot of engine models and years 👍
