I cannot describe how valuable this video is. I literally just came back from the 2nd practice after a gap of 2 years, and my shoulders got tense again. Thank you a lot, sensei!

This is actually a problem of mine. It also applies the same in any martial arts like doing Iaido, Aikido or Ju-Jitsu. And it's sometimes in the arms and waist and tandem too. I've found that calming down with meditation and stretching before practice helps loosen the body of the daily stresses or work. Highly recommend every practitioner to meditate and stretch everyday at least if you can't practice everyday.

Agree 100%. Also when you start to make the routine with the boken/katana, start very slowly so you can realize the best and relaxed way of the movement. All of it has worked for me

@@eduardomartel788 exactly. Even my sensei tells me why you using force to cut? The blade is already sharp enough to pierce. It's habbit to wanna swing it hard and fast but there's no need to if your not using proper elliptical technique.

Thank you for your comment, Outbound Flight!😀 Completely agree with your sensei. However, to get there, that is a bit different story, isn't it? Everyone went through the same problem. Everyone 😁

Thank you very much for this video. Your remark that tension can come from wanting to strike fast really resonates with me. I find kirikaeshi especially hard because of this. On the one hand, teachers and senpai tell me to do kirikaeshi fast (or: as fast as I can), but on the other hand, when I try to go fast I tense up too much! It's hard to find a balance.

Thanks for your comment and you're welcome, Der Maniac! 😄 I hear you! Fast is not a good word, smooth is better. Make sure you keep your kiai going too. If you chop up your kiai as you strike, that will slow down your kirikaeshi!

I’d like to ask, how would gain control and stability when swinging/using the sword. I’m a foreign beginner in a western country, but I assume it’s consistent practice and training or are their exercises that help.

Thank you for your comment, Michael Loveday!😀 Hope you liked the video. You can gain control and stability through training. That is for sure. I have mentioned how to get it here and there through my videos, so keep watching the videos. It is always hard to tell you what to do since I have never seen you practicing. One thing I can tell you is, analyse what you do so you can control what you do. I have tons of videos here but also have more info at kendo-guide.com. Hope you get a lot of info you need! 😀👍
