Thank you for this! As others stated, the mallet and wrench method didn't work for me either. I, however, did not have those ball bearings in between the cylinder. I also would like to remove the cylinder from the seat. Any suggestions? Still can't seem to wrench it off.

I have a fancy gaming chair but one of the slots for the wheel is so deformed the wheel wouldnt fit tried repariing it but nothing lasted. came across this just to take the base off. I have a very old chair thats really broke that Is just in the corner, took that base off and swapped. I removed the clip and it slid out as you showed but how do I remove the outer cylinder from the wheel base where the casters are. It's stuck in there pretty solid. I removed or thought I removed the cylinder from the caster area by removing the clip and sliding the cylinder out. Except not really the outer shell was there as I learned later. chewed up the metal on the cylinder quite well with the wrench before it finally popped off. I felt so proud. Was all set to replace it and then I saw the shell part of the cylinder was still in the base. Whacked it with the only hammer I had a plastic dead drop mallet and it's not coming out. Hoping a rubber mallet or claw hammer does the trick tomorrow. Update: So far it is not.

Question... On my chair, that couple seems to be really far inside the tube, unlike yours. I tried hammering down on the cylinders with a wooden block as to not damage the cylinder, but the cylinder won't budge at all to bring it closer to me in order to remove that coupler. Does not work, the piston is still stuck on the bottom of the seat and the gas container is stuck to the base too. This did nothing but waste my time taking the two pieces apart. I need the whole thing taken out.

Also for those of you that are trying to get the whole unit out, once you complete this step, to get the rod out youll need a hammer and to smack the base of the chair and it should pop out with enough force. Make sure to be holding it upside down as well
