There are a lot of old walls out there which are covered with ugly wallpaper, getting rid of it can instantly update any room. By removing wallpaper yourself you can freshen up the room with a coat of paint.

A gib stopper is trade slang for a plasterer, and he or she would just skim coat the wall, which is basically just applying plaster on the wall to cover any imperfection, so it wont be visible to the eye when painting or finished...

Mitre 10 team - Under description text you guys need to post links to each store item used in this video and the cost of the item so we can see how much this costs.

If you can’t afford a plasterer and don’t mind a bit more work, then hanging lining paper on imperfect walls gives a nice finish to a painted room.

I really appreciate the mitre10 how to videos, but in hindsight I wish I hadn't removed the wallpaper. Instead I would have smashed the old gib down and put new gib up. By the time you spend hours stripping the wallpaper, buy and apply and expensive sealer paint, and pay a gib stopper to do a skimcoat, it just isn't worthwhile.

You should add DIF concentrate to the hot water, the backing paper almost falls off. Can also use Resene Prep n Seal (after Sureseal) on the wall instead of a skim coat. All of these are available at Mitre 10.

***** If you are doing it yourself it is much easier and faster than a skim coat. If you sand it the sooner after it dries the better. I don't sand it as I like the slight texture anyway. It won't bleed under cheap masking tape (green bear one) so is easy to get clean edges.

My sequence: DIF, sugar soap clean, fill (sand), sureseal, prep n seal then two coats of spacecote. Can do two coats of prep n seal, it hides well but won't fill in deep marks.

I try and do everything myself but you could get a tradesman in. Not sure how much it would cost. Resene data sheet says 4m2 per litre which would be 150 for a 10L pail but I have done 4 rooms and have lots left. A skim might be better for gouges but shouldn't get these with DIF as the paper almost falls off.

With painted wallpaper we pulled off the top layer and put diff on the base layer and it came off really easily since it could soak in. I think the scoring doesn't work very well. If you fill deep marks first it will work better.

Saighu Definitely sureseal first for old gib. Sureseal soaks in and locks down any loose material or left over wallpaper glue (sealing the surface) and it blocks stains and yellowed gib paper. I asked three different Resene staff including the helpline and they say if you do a wet area it should be Sureseal/Prep n Seal/Sureseal, the last coat seals the surface under the paint.

After all of that you say you got a gib stopper in because the walls weren't of paint finish quality. How does the gib stopper work? Does new gib go over the top of the old walls? Or is it a repair job? Am wondering if there is any point removing all the wallpaper if new walls are being put in over the top of old ones.

I'm sure in some cases, you can paint straight over the wallpaper, many people do. For us, our wallpaper has been very badly done, it is not tidy at all, so we are going to remove it before paining.

Man all these videos with easy wallpaper, meanwhile in reality i have to punch hole the wall and soak, remove first layer, then resoak and scrape away every inch.
