What a fantastic video. It’s given me huge confidence to render my new concrete block raised beds myself. Three blocks high, exactly like the one in this video.

Great video guys. Very informative for us beginners. Some people on here are making critical comments. These are obviously people that are not beginners, and feel that they know better. Well, all I can say is that there are many ways to do lots of jobs. This particular method has worked well for me, closely following all of your methods has meant that my raised borders look amazing. Excellent presentation....! Best of the many I've seen thus far. Answers all my questions and demonstrates the techniques excellently! One or two coats..? Why is it called a scratch coat? Do you start at the bottom or the top? How thick do you apply the scratch coat? How do you follow up...? What steps in order. When do you do what? When is it ready for the next step? How much pressure do you apply? How wet/ how dry..? etc etc etc. The answers are all there for a novice like me......! And I think the video was designed for novices....! (I am a novice (although I am old and retired!) Thanks for posting!

Do you do corners without beads? A lot of clients don't want that crisp corner on an older building
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate! Yeah I do sometimes, it just depends on the client - my next video actually shows me rendering without beads. I just use straight edges to form the angle. However, I often find that you get a sharper corner if you don't deliberately curve them but I know what you're saying. Great hearing from you. Cheers 🍻

Hi what beads do you use for external walls? Rendering a brick wall which runs into a block wall .flattened bricks and smoothed blocks but now want to finish it to a thickness say 10mm thick .don't want to put another 20 mm or so on.plastic better than gal steel ? Diy'er so only want flatish surface before coating.

Great video, very useful (I've subscribed and also enjoy your plastering videos). I am going to render my outside brick wall in between my driveway and my neighbours driveway. It's old brick work with bits chipped away. and sometimes water seeps through onto my driveway (their driveway is higher). I will be repointing the wall in some areas, and then priming the whole wall with SBR like you say before rendering. Would you advise also mixing SBR into the cement/render mix to make it more water proof? Thanks.
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate! Yes some people use SBR in their mix but I'd only use it in the scratch coat - I don't like using it on the top coat. However waterproofers and SBR in the scratch works a treat!

@bjflanagan2092 4 жыл бұрын
The top coat render always has to be weaker than the scratch coat render / scratch 4 sand 1 cement & plasticiser Top coat 5 sand 1 cement & waterproofer or you could use 3/1 scratch 4/1 top coat depending on how strong the mix has to be allow 3/5 days ( depending on weather ) between scratch coat and applying top coat render. As it needs to cure properly between coats

Hi mate great video. Thanks for putting it up. Im trying to render inside a fireplace on the back wall where a stove would be. After some research, a lot of renderers suggest using "old school" NHL lime with plastering sand as opposed to cement so it can expand and contract under the heat better. They've said a 5:1 scratch coat and a 6:! top coat. Ive done the scratch, however the mix for the top coat is very grainy. Ive done a mix with "Builders" Hydrated lime in the past, as it gives it a nice smooth mix and acts as a plasticiser. However I've been told not to add any ad mixtures or Feb because of the heat inside a fireplace. When I come to float it, all the render just comes off the wall. The mix is a bit of a nightmare and not very smooth. I don't think it matters substituting LIME for cement, but any advice. Would really appreciate it. Cheers 👍🏻
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 5 жыл бұрын
Hi mate great question and thanks for the support. I don't know who told you that mix (and it might work), but I always add cement to my mix. He is right about allowing for lime because this gives the render flexibility which is what stops the render from cracking when the heat creates expansion. However, when I've rendered a fireplace I've used a similar mix but added 1 cement as well as the lime. For example, you scratch would be 5:1:1 rather than 5:1 (the latter being lime). This is what I recommend matey 👍

You'll have to remove all of the paint from the brickwork and then SBR it before you start plastering mate. Bit of a ball ache but you need to do it!

@@PlasteringForBeginners great thank you. Out of curiosity . Have you thought about doing a special video where you working along side someoneteaching them (like me a novice ) so that question can be anwsered . This could give people a way of seeing the true do's and dont . In like a real life scenario.?

That's a great idea to be honest mate. I might look into it because it would be ideal to have a complete novice learning from scratch! Great idea. Cheers 👍

Hi I have been asked to re-render a wall that's an external basement wall below the water table. It's an outside wall garden but behind it is ground and the road. It's not feasible to get behind and tank it, can you suggest best approach to re-rendering it. Should I try and water proof it before scratch coat? Or just lime render it and let the water come through naturally. If so are there suitable paints for this? I am inclined to tell the customer that it will always end up cracking eventually because of hydrostatic pressure and not been tanked. thanks
