I spent all day troubleshooting a zone that went out. Started out by replacing the valve and rewired it. Ran the 3 backyard zones and a new one went out. Seemed odd so I switched up the wiring to confirm a wire was no longer working. Do wires just go out? What causes this? Lots of Google searching led me to this video and it seems like a potential option. Currently I just wired two valves together but the pressure is lower than I want. Thanks for this video and any insight you have!

Yes, bad wires are unfortunately common. Usually caused by bad connections or damage by digging, moles, trees, etc. if u have a valve close to the one that’s out, the new zone is a much quicker answer.

Hi Jimmy, thank you for another well explained video. Im a Commercial landscaper in Florida and Im getting more into irrigation due to my responsibility of doing monthly irrigation wet checks. My new account has lots of wiring issues and I found 3 of the zones using my armada pro chatter feature but atleast 3 zones are not coming on. So now I think its time to invest in a WIRE TRACER. But there are so many options out there. What tracer would you recommend and why?

@@sprinklerrepair4L Thank you for the quick reply. Can I ask you a question? I have 3 commercial properties that do not know where the sprinkler box is. Can I trace wire without knowing where any wire are. In other words , I wont be able to send a tone through the wire.

@@mixingreen it does have a broadcast option, but personally I never use it. I always go to the controller or valve box and send a signal.

@@sprinklerrepair4L Makes sense . I found 3 valves , so it should lead me to the rest once I get my tracer. By the way, do you ever do check valves? I had one account that the pump wasn't pulling up water. So I wasn't sure if the pump, or the check valve, was the issue. How can you tell what is wrong without replacing both?

@@mixingreen I always try to eliminate the easiest variables first. I start reading ohms and voltage at the controller. If that’s good I check for water. If that’s good not a lot is left but a mechanical failure of the valve or a blockage. I hope the best for you!

If the wires to another valve are there you can still use it or you can trench a wire to the nearest valve if it’s closer than the controller.

I have a wire that was chewed into by gophers. I can see that where it’s chewed, the wire is completely corroded. I cut a section of wire, about 1 foot of wire, but I see the wire is still green one both ends of the cut further along the wire path. Can that wire still be repaired? Or if a wire is corroded, is that wire just not good at all anymore?

Ideally you want to cut out all the corrosion. You can always repair and see if it works. If it works just note you may have to repair in the future if it worsens.

Need assistance…..all of sudden my zone 4 stopped working? In manual mode by turning the solenoid it works fine. I changed the diaphragm, made sure the ports were good too. I even changed the solenoid and still nothing. I checked voltage on both solenoids and they are good as well?🤦🏽‍♂️ so what else is left? switch out the valve? I just don’t understand how the valve can be bad? Also any preference hunter or or it or rain bird for new valves? thanks for the help in advance

I like both Hunter and Rainbird valves. I don’t install any other brands. If you get good ohms at the controller (not just voltage) then it’s a mechanical failure in the valve. I usually change out everything but the base.

You’re my go to irrigation guy. 🤘🏽😬 you helped me when I was troubleshooting these two valves a few years back and I ended up switching up the round box to a square box and installing a new valve one was a hunter and the other was orbit…. I didn’t switch them out to the same tbecause it was working fine but I think going forward I will probably just install Rain Bird. The one having issues is actually the hunter brand…what is also surprising is that rain bird Products are actually cheaper than hunter and orbit. I will double check the voltage and ohms on the wires/controller! Thanks again and have a great rest of your weekend!!

Well guess what….installed the new valve and zone 4 is still not working? I’m scratching my head to what it could be? I checked the panel voltage good…solenoid good….hunter valve is new….any suggestions before calling a professional. Man this sucks spent 4hrs replacing everything and have bruised scraped up knuckles to show for it. Thanks Btw….manually the valve, solenoid the system works good

@@sprinklerrepair4L guess what it was the controller I called a buddy of mine and he said pull 4 station wire and put it in the 3 slot to see if it will work, it worked. I had not done that I felt like Homer Simpson doh 😆😭 it’s a bad terminal and unfortunately it’s a 4 station panel I had not done that and couldn’t believe I had not checked that. I actually called orbit and they are shipping me a new box. I’ll know next time.

If you are not getting any ohms then it’s a wiring issue. If you get good homes 20 to 60… Then it’s either a mechanical failure of the valve, or the controller. I hope the best for you!

Ever deal with electrical interference? All selenoids, wire, mechanical components operational and check good. Will work with a pro C but installing hydrawise and it trips over current alarms. Got a huge area reading with interference during valve locate about 10ft from well pump. The valves pulsate at a constant rate even. My bet on interference from a separate source

The nice thing about the Hydrawise is it shows you currents. If you have any questions you can call their help line, but it is a huge advantage to be able to see the current.

What happen if reading in the controler oms are 134 and in the zone is 43 and system dont start? Can u help me with that

It’s possible that there is a shirt somewhere, could be bare wires touching.
