The best way to repair a Northstar engine is to use the Northstar Performance Sure Grip Head Stud System. Time Serts and Helicoils are good for many types of repairs, but Northstar aluminum blocks are not one of them. If you use Time Serts or Helicoils, within a few years or less, you will be right back where you started, or worse. Northstar Performance Sure Grip Head Studs come with an excellent warranty and are the correct way to fix broken threads in a Northstar block.

On my 98 DeVille I just pulled out the upper and lower radiator hoses and let it drain that way. I took a garden hose, stuck it in my upper radiator hose and flushed water from the top of the radiator to the bottom and waited for the water to run clear. Then I put the garden hose in the lower radiator hose and reverse flushed it so it went from the bottom of the radiator out the upper radiator hose and I let that run clear. Then I removed the reservoir cap, stuck the garden hose down into it and flushed all of the coolant out of the engine and it ejects out of the port that the upper radiator hose connects to. I let that run clear. Then I put the garden hose right up to the port that the upper radiator hose connects to and blasted water in reverse through the engine until it overflowed the reservoir and I let that run clear. Then I took out the thermostat, put the reservoir cap back on and off the garden hose into the upper port and flushed it out of the lower port. Then (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT) I put the upper and lower radiator hoses back on but I didn't clamp them down. I took off the purge line which is directly above the upper radiator hose. It's a narrow and small little hose with small clamps. Clean out that hose and make sure the small outputs on both ends of the port are clear of debris. There Purge line is very easy to get clogged up and when it does it'll overheat your car every time. Stick the garden hose down into the reservoir and blast water through until it sprays out of the front and back of the purge line with full force. Put them Purge line hose back on and clamp it down. Drain all of the water out of the radiator and the engine. I just blow through the upper radiator hose until it's clear. And then I put a disconnected small tube or hose on to the reservoir opening and blow air into it until all the water is out of it. Take a jug of coolant and pour it down into the upper radiator hose until it's coming out of the lower hose until it's flowing free with no bubbles and quickly jam the lower radiator hose into the lower port. Now the radiator is full. Keep the upper radiator hose filled to the brim and keep it held up so it doesn't overflow. Then start filling the reservoir up with coolant until it's flowing freely through the upper radiator port and there are no bubbles coming out. Then jam the upper radiator hose into that port. Clamp the hoses down, fill the reservoir up half way and you're good to go. Start the car up, let it run with the reservoir cap off, squeeze the upper radiator hose continually to burp the air out. After about 20 minutes of this, put more coolant if it's lowered down some and keep it filled too the hallway point. Put the cap back on and let it keep running while revving it up to 3000 RPM. This helps Purge the air out some more. Monitor the temps and make sure the fan turns on and off at 222 and 213 degrees. It should bounce back and forth between these 2 temps while idling if everything is down correctly. Doing it this way will make sure that everything is cleaned out and not clogging anything up. The Purge line is very important to keep cleared and it's very easy to do. This one small line will overheat your car in a heartbeat if it's plugged up.

I changed brands and went to a really high volume Toyota dealer in the late 1980s and I earned cash as if I had 3 hands there compared to the GM shop. Almost every ticket in the Toyota shop was a cash ticket and what few problems the cars had were predictable and they followed a pattern and you spent very little time on diagnostics on Toyotas compared to GM vehicles which had weird problems all over the place including weird intermittent problems.

powder after drilling. No use in using the block or repairing it. The powder is caused by inferior casting and improper mixing of the material before GM casted it. It's a junk block. The repair was good and informative. Just letting you know if aluminum powders like that it's because of a fault of the casting at GM and the problem will return later on.

Besides making a money pit for someone and putting the money in their pocket, why in the heck would GM keep putting out this pos and never fix the problem!
@eots448 жыл бұрын
Well the thing is that GM tried many times to fix the issue, and after 2000 the Northatar was a much more reliable engine. Northstar engines in the 06-11 DTS are highly unlikely to have headgasket issues, while I'm not going to say that it's impossible, chances are slim to none. The 2007 model year DTS was actually awarded by J.D. Power as the most dependable car in the entire automotive industry not only beating it's direct competitors but having fewer reported problems than any other car including ones from brands like Toyota and Honda.The worst years for head gasket failure seem to be 97,98, and 99. I think the Northstar gets a bad rep, they're much more reliable than people make them out to be, other than the headgasket issue and the possibility of developing an oil leak, the Northstar is actually bulletproof, and many owners are able to own their cars 200,000+ miles without ever having to deal with either issue. Why did they keep using the Northatar? Well reliability concerns aside, the Northstar is a fantastic engine, tons of power and very smooth operation. Unfortunately in the later years performance was a little on the lacking side, and they likely decided to move forward without the Northstar in favor of designing engines that better fit with the direction they were heading with the Cadillac brand. I love my 2007 DTS and its Northstar, 102,000 miles and she runs flawlessly.

On the front head yes. You can tell when you remove your head bolts if they are bad. Everyone should be tight and make a loud cracking noise when you start to loosen them. If they don't that means the threads in the block have failed. It is possible to freehand drill out the bad threads and re-tap and replace with a different slightly larger bolt. You don't have to replace all of them but of course the dealer or a garage will say you do have to replace all of them. On my car I determined the head gaskets were bad by a block test this was (due to the red coolant turning corrosive I believe) The head, block and bolts were all good. Replaced gaskets and head bolts and the car has ran good for 3 years so far. Will it last forever heck no but it is a great car purchased for $900 fixed for like $400 and about 40 hrs work.

The best Northstar is a lowered Northstar, lowered into the crusher and made flat. Hmmm, wonder why GM went bankrupt ?

Timeserts are a bandaid. The true fix is to head stud these engines. The timeserts dont address the full issue youbstill have bolts pulling at soft metal. Ive seen this method fail on caddilacs after 3 to 5 yeara depending on location of country and driving style
@OzMechanics5 жыл бұрын
I used timesert because that what was thought in GM program at school. Now I don’t even mess with northstar. Btw thanks for watching

@@OzMechanics thats a shame we need support and mechanics willing to work on our cars. I have 4 northstar powered cars 96 eldo, 01 Dts, 03 sts, 04 base deville only the 01 dts has had failed heads... crossing fingers ...Lol. They are powerful good cars just loathe GM for not making better choices. Ive seen too many clean n* cars sitting in junkyards cause of this costly repair..sad.

Timeserts either fail immediatedly or pull-up after a good year of driving. They only make the bolts bigger and are a one-time repair option. Meaning that if you ever have to do your head gaskets again they come out with the head bolts....lol We offer the only affordable lifetime repair option for this engine. cadillacheadgasketfix.com

+Meghan Skrabak No the coolant NEVER mixes in with the oil as this is a DOHC engine and not the regular OHV engine design. If you are not loosing coolant, then the problem is either the cooling fans not working properly, the thermostat is not opening when needed or there is blockage in the cooling system somewhere. Cooling system maintenance is extremely important on all GM vehicles and for vehicles using Dexcool antifreeze. Hope this helps.....

If you are lucky it is something like a plugged surge line or bad radiator or bad water pump. I would do a block test first before buying any parts. You can rent one from Auto Zone or just buy one for like $60. Super simple to do and a good idea to do before any future car buys.

+Meghan Skrabak is there pressure when you open up the coolant tank?
@meghanskrabak65278 жыл бұрын
+UnitedRecording ya, there is after you shut it off. but is that normal ? its Holding pressure Now I have done A Block Test AN STEPPED ON the gas while doing the Test and stayed Blue. did find a couple Lines That Looked Like MAYBE They where Leaking BUT ALSO found one Busted after fixing one The one to alternator Went out Hoping it WAS Leaking AN did Not Bust Because Of pressure FROM heads . This is WHY I hate Chevy GMC. lol
@UnitedRecording8 жыл бұрын
+Meghan Skrabak if the rest stayed blue, it's 100% not the head gasket... That test never fails. There's gotta be something else going on.
