I just picked up a dead DCD996 cheap and I am hoping its a simple fix. I've already done a 12v Dewalt which just needed a new housing and a bit of a clean. These repairs are very satisfying!

Would love to team up with you to do tear downs and engineering build overview videos! The need for repairable well built tools now in this throw away world… fell in love with your content. Thank you.

I've got the old NiCd version, that and an angle grinder, still going strong, this may help in the future as i hate throwing out good tools, thanks for your videos👍

Great video and you’re correct: often a fault is just one part. 👍

I’d say, as crazy as it sounds, maybe the guy using was switching gears while it was literally running, could kinda get stuck in between gears but not really a high probability with this specific build and model, great fixin

I've the same DCD996 the chucks gone so bought a new chuck but when I was trying to get it out she keeps slipping Im assuming it's the gearbox gone now, could be something further back. Am I best chance fixing it, sending it off to get fixed or just getting a new one? It's 3 years old now and don't want to get too deep into it if it's not going to be right

Mate, I've got a Makita drill that's been used for over eight years and a wee DeWalt impact driver that's been going for about six, you're probably having the same issue as here, parts wear out.

I don't expect a response, but in case you're available I'll ask a question. During the tear down did you happen to find 5 pins under the clutch assembly? I've got a 998 with what definitely appears to be 996 guts. I found those pins in mine.

Hi Dean, Really appreciate your video, quick question for you: I have the same drill after I opened it dropped off 5 bearing beads, do you know where they are original installed ? Thanks, Jason

Hello any idea why my chuck knob became stiff when I try to tighten it ?

I took mine apart and it had a good amount of old grease. I wiped alot of it out. I put enough new grease back to cover all gears.

I guess this happens when you leave the selector in between 1 and 2, I've seen some of my colleagues do this and not even realize, it makes a terrible sound when it's stuck in between gears. Am I right?

Thank you very much, very detailed! Can you tell me which of those parts is responsible for the hammer function? Dewalt wants me to pay $99.00 plus shipping to fix mine.....you know....the one that was sold to me 14 months ago with "lifetime" warranty.
@geneo19769 ай бұрын
DeWalt does not carry a lifetime warranty. Maybe a kid at Lowes told you that.

The tool does not look like it has had many hot suppers, has to be abuse in some way for that amount of wear on one part?

Quite the bit of engineering going on in there. It's as if that gear selector ring was made to be JUST strong enough
