How To Repair A Pull Chain Light Fixture | How To Change A Broken Pull Cord Lamp Fixture

Jeff shows you the easy way of how to change an old broken porcelain pull chain light fixture on a ceiling light and replace it with a new pull chain fixture. After many years of use our basement pullstring light stopped working creating quite a problem not allowing us to turn on the light. Jeff does a quick fix and simple repair on a pull string lamp socket fixture and shows the tools used and step-by-step info on how to easily replace it with a new working lamp fixture with an outlet and reconnecting the white and black wires to the fixture terminal connection screws. Using a pullchain fixture is a great alternative to a light fixture controlled by a wall switch where the chain is located right under the light bulb. These are most commonly found in basements, closets, crawlspaces and storage areas. If you have a pull cord light fixture that has failed, then you’ll want to watch this video.

One thing you may want to do when switching a breaker off is to put a piece of tape over it. It's just a safety precaution so someone doesn't flip the breaker back on while you're working on it.

I just performed this chore, replacing a fixture 50 years old. I never actually saw the end of a wire. I found U-loops on both wires where the insulation had been stripped. Didn't expect to find that. I hook up the new fixture exactly like the old one. Works fine though I'm not sure if the old wiring set-up is up to code.

Does new fixture come with new chain to pull because I broke off my chain. I notice is that new chain to pull or Same chain. But when I turned the breaker back on (breaker covered the whole basement) everything directly off the line I worked on (that light, laundry room light, washing machine) no longer has any power, but the rest of the basement is working fine. Hi, if it did not have a pull chain I don't think you'll be able to easily add one you'll need to buy a pull chain fixture and switch it out.

Hi Tracy, I don't think you can just replace the pull chain unfortunately, it's built into the fixture. A new fixture is only a few dollars and it's a pretty quick switch.

I was taught to do an DB so the left MCBs are left for on and the right MCBs are right for on ( push for on, pull for off) and i swear my trainer said these exact words ' sh!t sparks would wire the other way so don't let me catch you doing it '

Depending on where the pull string broke, if it's an easy fix for the string, go that route but if the string broke at the top inside the fixture you may be better off just replacing the fixture and pull string.

How are you suppose to know what wire goes to which input if they aren’t the same?

Read the instructions on your new package. Usually the silver goes with the white and the black with the copper

Only problem with the video was the way you bent the wires. Wires should be bent in the same direction the screw tightens. This ensures a tighter connection and reduces the chance of wires loosening while tightening the screws. Otherwise, great job. As a side note, some very old houses have hot and neutral wires that are the same color so your suggestion of using a voltage detector is a must in these situations.
