Great demonstration. If I wanted the switch to control multiple lights, would 14/3 be ran between the fixtures?

This video is great! What would you do if the pull chain light has has two 12/2 wire wires going into the pull chain light? There is another 12/2 wire going to another source. Can you still install a light switch to this light?

Thanks for the very clear and concise videos! One question. If you did not plan on adding a "smart switch" then could you do the "switch" leg with 12/2 wire instead of 12/3 wire by using the white wire in place of the red wire i.e., recode white for "hot"? I know it's kind of confusing but then you don't need to buy a roll of 12/3 maybe? Thanks again.

@@spdfreak-iw6gp Actually, the NEC code 2020 requires 3 wire cable going to a switch and you cap off the white wire with a wire nut.I guess why they do this nowadays is you don’t have to paint the white wire black, and you have an extra wire if in the future you want to install a combination power outlet with a switch and possibly a charging port/switch combo. Also if you want to install a ceiling fan in the future, you have an extra wire you could use for a speed/light control.

Can I take power from a led pot light fixture/junction box that’s already on its own single pole switch and send power from led junction box/light fixture to a new power switch to power a new led pot light in closet ?if so this would be very helpful I looked through all your videos couldn’t find anything .

hopefully somebody can answer this. Why do I need a 12/3 wire to convert when you can wire a single pole light switch to light fixture using 12/2 wires. I don't understand this.

where are you pulling your power from? your sticky arrow shows a 12/2 as your incoming power source, but where does that 12/2 continue on to? did you connect that to a breaker into a panel? or is it just a plug on the other end?

after following your video, I was able to get the light switch working. However, when the switch is in the on position, both red and black show a current going through and when it's in the off position, both red and black show a current going through them. is this normal?

This whole time I'm watching this video thinking why did he use 14-3. A 14-2 would of done the job with less wire.

It’s so that you have a neutral available in the future. Smart switches require a neutral wire in order to work, so if you’re ever going to upgrade to a smart switch, it would be best to use the 14-3. If you’re never going to install a smart switch, then 14-2 will do the job just fine!

So for converting an existing pull chain fixture, I need to add: 1 toggle switch + J-box, some 14-3 wire, a standard light fixture, and another junction box to make all these joins. Makes sense! I thought I had to reroute power to totally different location, but switch and 14-3 wire act as an interrupt there!
