Might be the best and easiest rust hole patch video ever made. Talk about simple compared to others

this is great, some rich people here are making negative comments cause they have thousands to spend on welding new metal to a 20 year old vehicle. id rather do this on my 20 year old van, doesnt have to look like a brand new mercedes. just want to make it look better than it does now. dont give a rats @$$ if the rust comes back in a few years, ill just spend 20 bucks and an hour or 2 of my time and fix it again using this great method shown here by kurt. thank you so much for the video

To all people that are replying / commenting saying that this is terrible way to do it; he says its for cars that people don't really care that much about but don't want a rust hole causing additional damage. ""Winter Beater"! For those of us that know what he's talking about, this is perfect! Thanks for the quick fix! The rust mort should keep the rust from coming back for a very long time. Try to do you best to grind / sand as much of the rust as you can. Of course if you are able to cut out the rust; you could use a piece of fiber glass cloth for a larger hole. Great video overall! Thanks!

Kurtscottage- You clearly explained your method, spoke clearly, and provided an informative video. Also, I can see this process being utilized for applications than auto repairs. I will attempt to mend a damaged aluminum patio door frame about the lock area (home break-in with crow bar causing large jagged hole) based upon your excellent post. Thanks for helping the community.

Comnents saying this won't last, yadda yadda... I plan on using this as a temporary fix on parts that will get replaced later. I don't want a rust spot looking all ugly between now and when I have what I need to put new metal on. Sometimes life forces you to use a temporary, "good enough" solution.

This is a great way to keep older vehicles on the road!

I have spent more time trying to find a panel supplier online with the part I need then it takes to do this repair. Also wasted hours on the phone to hear we don't have that panel. Sometimes this way is the better way. Turn on your TV and keep fantasizing that you are that guy rebuilding a hotrod that tells you this is wrong. If you have access to the better way bravo! Sometimes you just need to get the job done. I don't own a metal shop so this will work till I have access to one or chose to pay someone to do it that way. I wonder how many commenters here actually have what it takes to get off their ass and do this repair let alone the better one.

Me knowing a total of ZIP on how to hide rust spots, I thought this was a great idea. My first idea was to go get spray foam insulation in a can, use a piece of cardboard to help hold the foam in place and spray the hole, let it dry and harden, cut off the excess and spray Armor All custom Shield Coating on it to give it a bold black line along the base of the door! I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am Se, 156,000 miles and bought it real cheap so cheap fixer upper for me.

It boggle's my mind that so many people just come here to bitch and complain about a guy that admit's it's not the proper way it's just a quick cheap fix to make it look decent. your more than welcome to show us how its properly done .. or is it you don't want go threw all the hassle of cutting and measuring and welding and grinding etc.etc on an older beater( NOT A SHOW CAR) well just maybe he don't want too neither on this car, truth is what he is doing ain't going to hurt damn thing and as long as its GLASS filler it will last for a long time bondo glass will not fall apart like regular body fillers it actually will seal its self around the rusty area pretty well.

Brazing with propane and a good rod would have been helpful too. Not to mention, that it's cheaper, easier and can provide stronger joints than welding. Sheet metal welding requires shielding gas for better results than fluxed core (only works for .8-7.8 mm), but can get blown away by wind, giving bad results.

I have some rust holes in the hood of my car I have been ignoring for a few years. I am trying to arrest the damage. It is on an almost 20 year old Honda . I put corroseal on it but doing nothing would just make the holes bigger so I am just biting the bullet and getting something on there that #1 will arrest the rust somewhat #2 REpair the holes and #3.. if I am lucky make it look a bit better. Between going to MAACO and paying 2,000 for welding etc.. (they were just going to find a new hood which I am currently trying to do) I am going to try this . Maybe this will get me through a season and keep the rust from getting worse...

Make it easy on yourself. Wash the hole out with water. Let dry for a day. Trim the scraggly rust off. Fill with spray foam. After foam has set, trim and lower it with a wire brush. Apply your short strand fiberglass and then finish with bondo.

@sephangelo460310 жыл бұрын
Man! I would have brazed that hole with a silver solder or copper wire and the new bernzomatic JT539T swirl flame torch, then there wouldn't be too much body filler consumption. That torch I mentioned is worth 25 dollars and can braze (which provides stronger joints than welding) just as good as your typical oxy-acetylene rig or TIG machine.

This type of rust comes from the inside and works its way to the outside. You method only hides the problem. You need to cut out the thin section, scrape out the rust inside and kill it with your choice of rust killers. Then make a patch of metal and weld over it or make a patch from fiberglass cloth. If you use your method, the metal that the Bondo is attached to will continue to rust and the patch will fall off.
