Exactly. Because a tub replacement will cost: $cost of new tub $cost of demo-ing out the tile and sheetrock above the tub (when you remove the tile so you can pull the tub, it ruins the sheetrock underneath and you have to replace it) $cost of installing and hooking up the new tub (plumber) $cost of installing new sheetrock and tile Thank you, Classic Truck - when your intention is to 'refresh' the bathroom, not rebuild it, your instruction is priceless!

I like the cardboard & screw idea! I think I’d add a duplicate sandwiched layer of wire mesh hardware cloth (1/2” mesh or 1/4” mesh) against the metal tub simply for added support in case someone gets pounding around with a bucket or other hard object (horse farm and my bathtub gets used pretty roughly sometimes as a washtub) Beautiful job. I wish you were closer and could come do mine. Even with clear instructions like yours I’m sure I’ll screw it up somehow.

I use expanding foam in some areas as a backer. It works great specially on fiberglass tubs. For spongy bottom tubs. Drill a few holes and spray expanding foam in them, then bondo.

HEY CLASS! I am currently working on a similar repair! My problem was caused by me not using a silicone sealant on the overflow so every time someone took a bath and filled the water up above that it leaked behind the wall and then rusted-out the bottom left side of the tub where the flange is! First order of business I knocked off all the loose rust then hit it with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer and let it dry! Then I hit it with Primer! Then I hit the entire tub with super-clean bleach vinegar mixture to get all of the residue out of the way! Now I'm going to mix my Bondo and start filling in the cracks! The best hint that I got from you was the idea of the screw through the cardboard as a backing! Stay tuned for the update if you give me a reply! 😅

Thank you for posting this. It will help with a really big Kohler cast iron whirlpool (master bath) tub where I removed all the jets. I removed all five jets because of all the nasty flakey stuff that came out every time I turned the jets on. It didn't make any difference how many times the tub was cycled with dishwashing soap and cleaned - after a couple of days the flakey black stuff was back. A real PITA. So I removed all the jets and the pump motor. A really big PITA. I discovered that all the jets were clean - all the flakey stuff was residing in the pump motor. Obviously, with the pump being permanently attached to the tub with all the plumbing hardware - one could not access the inside of the pump motor and clean it. Moral of this story - I will never, ever own another whirlpool tub again - PERIOD.

yes use sand paper or dremel to remove rust dry it off use acetone to clean then do bondo sand smooth then wipe with acetone again and as for the paint you can use appliance paint in a spray can at home depot but if is real small i think they carry touch up for tubs as well or amazon ...hope that helps

Hey. Wish I would have watched this helpful video earlier. I had a similar issue, but I believe my tub is enamel over steel (house built 1987). I went with JB Weld Marine epoxy, it dries to a nice opaque white, and I didn't have enough damage to repaint the whole tub. My rust holes were only dime-width. So far so good. But we'll see if it holds up...

@@classictruckaddictions7423 I used JB Weld Marine Weld. It's labelled as a "marine adhesive an sealant" but I thought it would be an all-in-one repair. Perhaps it's not epoxy, but you mix the 2 sides of the tube and it dries in 5 min. I didn't use acetone, I used 90% rubbing alcohol. I did get rid of all the rust and the surface was clean, dry, and wire brushed. I used no bondo, my holes were small so I just used a fine steel mesh over them, and spread the Marine Weld on top of that.

Great video. Very helpful. I thought about perhaps a better material than cardboard. There are precut perforated drywall patches that are aluminum with a mesh netting, that along with the fiberglass (with hairs) seems unstoppable. Very good info. I have 2 that I have to do. I like your technique. I’ve got a steel tub with your typical drain with rust around one side of it with a 1/8 in hole rusted through. The drain is stuck and can’t remove it. Was going to repair and reglaze it after my plumber removed the stuck drain for me but he says 1) not worth trying to remove the stuck drain from top and needs to open ceiling under tub to cut out and replace entire shoe and overflow and 2) patch repair of the hole and rust around the drain won’t last and may crack off when the new shoe and drain are installed. Not sure what to believe. Was thinking to try one more time to remove the stick drain by using hack saw to cut a notch and hit it with a cold chisel to see if it’ll rotate. move ahead and try. If it’s still stuck then move forward with plumber from under, patch, reglaze, and reinstall. If it doesn’t hold then think about replacing the tub or renovate the bath ($$$$). Appreciate any guidance and suggestions.

hello ...plumber is probably correct on going under to replace all but ive repaired many drains with success ..but that depends on who you get to do the job and what products they use .... i will tell you the company i got my training for has the best technique .... they are called .. MiracleMethod.com ...and they are all over the country and possibly able to remove the drain they the skill .... hope that helps

@@classictruckaddictions7423I’d be all over this myself to give it a shot as I had already bought the materials but then could not for the life of me get the drain out. Wrench broke the cross piece in the drain and the expander couldn’t get it to budge. So last shot Monday will be the notch and chisel. Then definitely will underneath drain cutout and replace and tub patch and reglaze. Hoping she holds. The upside to doing it from the underside is the guy patching the tub can later from underneath too since the ceiling will be open.

I worked in a car body shop. You are right about Bondo, this is a great mix of disciplines in the trades. I was wondering, as I have a overflow drain that is rusted about an inch in all directions. Your starting point is worse, and I have a believe with your experience your results will be better, but my situation is in a rental. As long as it holds water, and is clean, I will be able to sell it.

@@classictruckaddictions7423 I searched for fixing my overflow drain because this tub is 40 years old and the rust eruption is 360 degrees and 1/2 to 1 inch back from the overflow. I found what I expected, a repair method. Thanks for this I am sure I can do it easier than pulling the tub. I just replaced the tub next door a year or so ago, and do NOT want to do that again. What a pain.

I want to cut a removable panel in the closet wall, and work both sides. At the moment I can get to the underside as well, and already have a hole in that ceiling to repair so I have the best situation with which to attempt repairs.

Hello, Thank you for sharing, I want to fill in and close my overflow hole in my antique cast iron clawfoot bathtub, and was wondering if the Bondo Glass you're using would work better. I planed on putting a piece of fibreglass cloth on the outside of the overflow hole, and filling it with the Bondo Original formula on the inside and going back outside covering the fibreglass cloth with Bondo letting it set and sand. However watching your video I'm thinking the Bondo Glass might be a better application. What are your thoughts? Cheers, Willow

I started having rust pour out of my Bathtub Drain Overflow Plate area and my maintenace supposedly fixed and and was repainted very nicely, however a month later rust is returning to that same spot! I took off the plate to check behind it to see what was wrong and it the hole's sides are very soft and chipping away. What should I tell them next time when they return to fix the issue?

cat hair was for strength ..the 2nd is pretty much the same but with out cat so strength again but sand smoother and the white bondo AKA polly fill doesnt have the strength but sand very smooth and is easier to cover with epoxy rather than the 2nd one

First, thanks for the video, this is exactly what I need to do on a tub. I just would like to ask you for some clarifications. 1. First you use Bondo glass with the fiberglass fibers. 2. Your video said that you use a white filler Bondo, Polyfill next. However, in your video it says USC duraglass wiht blue cream filler. In one of your responses you said the second was Polyfiller-710 white. Are they the same, or is one a 3rd step? 3. Should I go over everything with the Poly-filler again before painting? yes 3 different ....bondoglass 1st usc duraglass is 2nd and white polyfill is last step ... you can use bondoglass as 2nd step as well because white poly fill sands so smooth and fills pin holes very well then primer and paint

1st bondo ... at Sherwin williams is called dura-glass ... very hard 2nd is Poly-Filler 710 (White) multitechproducts.com/poly-filler-710-white/ .... it sands very smooth and covers the dura glass so easier to cover when you paint it white ....and far as the primer i use from (integrity coatings ) with their wipe on adhesive bonding agent .....white epoxy from.... www.hawklabs.com/products-menu ....their low VOC high gloss white ...... as far as cost its my business so i get better prices ...... btw to use this you need a good HVLP tubine spray system .... hope that helps

@@missygraham313 morning .. on the dura glass bondo use 60 or 80 to shape your repair but the polly-fill (white) start finish with 220 it sands very smooth .... but you can go to 320 if you want but once 220 is done you'll probably be just fine

Joe Joe your still going to use the kitty hair right? If you just use a filler for something this big in the video you will have problems later. Bondo alone will not have the strength as the glass reinforced filler, the glass helps it maintain longevity!
