Hey, I have very little mechanic/car knowledge but I really want to learn more... I found a nice BMW with a siezed engine for only $1500, in a similar condition they typically go for around $10,000. It seems the only problem is the engine: the transmission is fine, etc. Would you say this would be a good purchase, to try rebuild the engine myself (or, get someone else to do it) - to learn about car engines and possibly make some cash? Or would you say this is a risky purchase and not worth considering...? Anyway thanks for the video, I love watching things like this, seeing how engines work and the final product... You deserve more subscribers!

Hi thanks for the vid. Isn't it necessary to verify if the head is warped, before assembly?
@BroughBuilt Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Only if the engine had overheated, otherwise I wouldn't bother. It's also always a good idea to have the valve seals replaced especially if the car has high mileage.

Thanks Dewet! Always very satisfying to "bring life" to a machine. I use normal multigrade engine oil for assembly and start up. I then replace the oil and oil filter after a 500km run in. When replacing a new Camshaft there is another break in procedure that needs to be taken that involves specific engine revving and additives in the oil to basically "harden" the Camshaft.
@kesu902 жыл бұрын
Several questions: 1. Were any of the rods burnt up from overheating? If they were, why did you still reuse it? The rod could be out of round and interfear with you oil bearing clearance. 2. Since the Crank was seized, did you have the machine shop checkout it out before re-use? I saw a lot of metal fused with the crankshaft which means a crankshaft regrind would be needed if the crank can be saved. 3. Were any of the crank caps scored and melted? If they were, does it require a line hone?
@BroughBuilt2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for the questions. I hope I can answer them: I had all components checked by the engineering shop. The head was skimmed, valves got re-seated, crankshaft was cut to a minimum oversize and the block did not suffer any damages.

Mine just seized up (2009 Mistubishi Galant) and Im debating doing this or selling the car for whatever I can get. Where do you draw the line on if its worth it or not?
@BroughBuilt2 жыл бұрын
Difficult question 🤔. I guess it depends on how much you can get for the car in a running condition (after spending money to get it running) vs non running and saving on repair costs.

great job! Thanks for the video! Very helpful! A question: I am a full time student, I have a tsi 2.0 engine seized in my car. I want to take a challenge to fix the engine at my home garage instead of spending $5000 to replace it. I don't have any professional knowledge on car, no mechanic experience. How would you rate the difficulty to do the work? 1-10. Thanks!
@streetsquiid5615 Жыл бұрын
Same here brother, don't have anything to spend. My 1.8 TSI is just sitting. Dealers always ask you $5,000 but there should be local mechanics how can recondition parts. They are far cheaper and paying them should be the way to go.

When the key is turned to the Start position, there is no response except the audio goes off, and comes back on when I release the key back to the on position. @BroughBuilt2 жыл бұрын
Hi. If it is only seized there is a good chance that you won't have to replace the block. It can either be honed, bored to oversize or even re-sleived. But you will have to open the engine to be certain.

I have a question. So recently I rebuilt a v6 engine that was seized due to the rod bearing issues. I put the engine back in and torqued everything. Now I’m worried that I also should have replaced the transmission. If the engine is seized would it have damaged the transmission?
@BroughBuilt3 жыл бұрын
I have never had any issues transpired to the transmission as a result of engine failure. I think you should be okay just repairing the engine. maybe have a look at the clutch condition while everything is open though...

I always send to the head to engineer for pressure test and skim. They make sure the valves seat properly and that there are no cracks. I guess you could take a chance and just put it back (except for if you have a blown head gasket then it is important for a "skim")

That sounds very unfortunate that they welded all the bolts. Can't you even gring them off? R6k to R8k is very expensive for a scooter. You should be able to pick up a complete unit for less than R2k on the market. Good luck buddy

@BroughBuilt3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I'm sorry about your bad situation. Every situation is different but and maybe you will have to replace your engine completely. But, I can't think of any reason you shouldn't open up your broken engine to see what damage has occurred. I have been lucky in the past and only needed to replace bearings. At least you can do an estimate of cost after seeing what needs to be prepared and then decide if it is cheaper to replace or rebuild

Seizure motor is same as lock motor? And u said need new crankshaft.. that all it needs?
@BroughBuilt3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Seizure is same as lock. Every engine has different problems. I send all parts to the engineer for measuring. In this engine the crank got lots of wear because the bearing failure and had to be replaced. This was all that needed replacing and the head needed to be skimmed. Also I replaced rings, bearings, gaskets and water pump.

Can you make money just fixing cars that need engine fixed
@BroughBuilt11 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I do that from time to time and it is very profitable. But you must be aware of the problem and how to repair it. My personal advice is to buy a car with only one problem (ie. Blown engine) and not one with multiple issues like body and interior and gearbox. Especially for a start.
