I just fixed a leaky Moen kitchen faucet this morning, yes, Christmas morning, using this video as a guide. It was so helpful, especially the tip about using a small screwdriver to get the old cartridge to budge. Man that baby was tight! And Moen even sent me the cartridge for free even though I'd lost the receipt years ago! So thanks for the great video, and sharing your knowledge with the un-handy. Merry Christmas!

Hi. Just wanted to say...I have to go replace a stem in my hot water faucet and this was very helpful. I've been dreading trying to get the thing pulled out because I know there will probably be a water vacuum to deal with. Knowing that there's a place to insert the screwdriver to lever it up if I can't pull it up by sheer brute force, with channel locks, made me breathe a little easier.

the very fact that people have to replace parts on these should really tell the moen story. there a many other makers of faucets which are virtually trouble free. moen is just marketed most heavily and the name has a high recognition factor.

Their faucets do stand apart from others by the build quality. Maybe they don't have the best cartridge design for two handle faucets because I don't think it's ceramic like on American standard but they are still great faucets. A lot of times the cartridges only need cleaned and can be put back into use without problems.

you can have'em, I'll stick with Delta or Chicago.
@TheOldkid8889 жыл бұрын
+dontrell iommi I have used almost every type of faucet. I use to consider Delta way up there when it came to quality. I was recently in a new home that had 5 sets of Delta. 3 out of 5 were leaking and the homeowner had to turn the water off to 2 sets. Not sure where they are being made but I wasn't overly impressed to say the least. Any washerless faucet will leak over time. Just a known fact. Some sooner then others. I for one have had great luck with Moen. This video was made to show just how to repair a washerless faucet. They are all very similar when it comes to making them water tight. Hello Ar, Is it the same type of faucet. Only reason I am asking is some caps actually screw off. You want to get a utility knife or some knife with a very thin blade and pry it off. They can be a little difficult depending of the water quality. Be careful if you are using a utility knife as a piece of the blade can snap off while prying it up. Thanks for commenting and I hope the repair goes well for you! Al

@TheOldkid88810 жыл бұрын
Hello T Tt; The number of the cartridge you need to make the repair is 1224. Once you have turned the water off and removed the handle; then you remove the nut. After the hold down nut has been removed; reattach the handle, turn the handle back and forth and this should loosen the cartridge allowing you to pull it out of the faucet. I hope this helps with your repair! Thanks for commenting and let me know how you get along! Al

Thanks for getting back to me, I do have the 1224. I'm just not able to get the old cartridge out. I've tried, a small flat head screw driver, and pliers. I'm out of ideas, my next step is to just replace the whole faucet.
@TheOldkid88810 жыл бұрын
Hello T Tt; If you get a set of vise grips and snap them on the stem; you should be able to give them a tap while pulling on them. That should work for you. Once you have removed the handle and nut; reattach the handle and pull hard on it and it should come out. They can be difficult at times, but one of these methods will work for you! Thanks for commenting and let me know how you get along. Al

I had a leak on mine, and replaced the cartridge but the faucet kept dripping. Are there issues beyond just replacing the cartridge?
@TheOldkid88811 жыл бұрын
Hello Frank; Usually replacing the cartridge will take care of the leak. There could be a little run (wear) in the faucet body. It could be found around the lower o-ring. Not very common, but it could be a flaw in the faucet or water quality is very acidic. If you remove the cartridge and run your finger down and around where the lower o-ring is found; you may find something there. I would try another cartridge to be on the safe side first. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al

What would cause a washerless faucet to drip constantly? I already had a plumber here because the aerator looked worn and dirty. So he replaced that and said sometimes the aerator can hold water and it slowly runs out. But the dripping problem is getting worse. He also didn't have the exact same aerator. So he put a standard one on. The original was deeper and when tight it covered the entire thread.
@TheOldkid88811 жыл бұрын
Hello GodlessManitoban; He was there for a fast buck! Aerators hold water. As soon as you turn your faucet off; the water stops. You will have to replace your cartridge on your faucet or the springs and washers that are inside the faucet. If you do not find a name on the faucet; you could try removing the cartridge and looking into the body of the faucet to see if there are any springs and washers inside. If so; you just have to replace them and reinstall the cartridge. I deal with Delta quite often and they have springs and washers that weaken over time and have to be replaced. This isn't a complicated job and if you are handy at all; you should be able to tackle this. If there is no name that is visible on the front of the faucet; there could be one on the backside. Get a small mirror and have a look directly behind the spout at the base. Let me know what you think. Thanks for commenting and get back to me on it. Al
@GodlessManitoban11 жыл бұрын
It's a Waltec faucet. I was going to try removing the tap. But I don't have the right size allen wrench. I mainly wanted to see the condition or the O-rings and see if there was any hard water build up. I live in a rental so the plumber is covered. It's just too bad he didn't do it right the first time. I don't have any doubts that what you said would work. If I had the correct size allen wrench I would've opened it up already. So I'll wait for the plumber again and this time make sure he opens up the faucets and looks at the cartridges. When it was new it never dripped like this. So when he said it's normal I knew he was full of crap.
@GodlessManitoban11 жыл бұрын
This is what I have; www.waltecfaucets.ca/PDF/82004LF_SpecSheet.pdf
@TheOldkid88811 жыл бұрын
Hello GodlessManitoban; Waltec are a good product. Looks like you need new washers and springs. If you remove the cartridge; you will see them in the faucet. Delta has taken over Waltec, but kept their name; so I would imagine that delta washers and springs would work. You only need to change the springs and washers as the cartridge is fine. If you remove the cartridge and then the springs and washers; you can actually get away with stretching the spring a little and and reinstalling them. This will work for you for a while if you cannot get to a store, but I am almost certain that Delta springs and washers will work. The cartridge has a stainless steel seat that will last for many years and that is why the cartridge does not have to be replaced. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al

I'll let the plumber tackle it. Since it's a rental I am actually forbidden from repairing things myself. I was just curious what would cause this slow drip. So I knew what the plumber should do when he comes. If these taps are washerless. Why is there a washer or rubber seal in them? Thanks for all of the answers given.

That’s awesome that you still reply to comments from a 10 year old video. I’m working on what I presume is a Moen based on the similar design. I can’t see a brand anywhere. I’m having trouble removing the cartridge & am hesitant to use too much brute force lest I make the problem worse. I’ll look through your videos & see if I can figure it out. If you reply I’m just looking for any tips. I’m sure you are busy, as such I do not presume to expect a reply. I did subscribe & look forward to learning some new skills. Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Canada? I’m from California but have roots in the Mid west. Cheers.
@TheOldkid888 Жыл бұрын
Hello khworker1322, There are other faucets that work similar to Moen. That being said.... Not all Moen faucets have the name on them, but you can identify them generally by... On nearly all Moen faucets, a general family series number can be found embezzled on the back of the spout. This usually starts with the letter M followed by a series of numbers. On some models, there might be a decorative ring at the base of the spout with the series number on it. There is generally a serial number on the faucet somewhere. Look for the M... Some cartridges can be a little to remove, but will come with a small straight (common) screwdriver being inserted where the cartridge hits the metal base. The edge of a knife blade can be inserted first and then the screwdriver. If you can get one on either side of the cartridge it should come out for you with a slight twisting motion on both. An extra set of hands is needed to make this happen. Up north in Canada! Thanks for subbing and best of luck with the repair! Al

Theirs a tool at home depot for supposedly this type of faucet. that's like 3 bucks. Do you need that for doing this work?
@TheOldkid88810 жыл бұрын
Hello Richard; I wouldn't bother getting the tool to make the repair! A pair of pliers will work for you on this application. Save your money. Thanks for commenting and have a great weekend! Al

Ohh ok. Have you had experience with the posi temp cartridge and tool?
@TheOldkid88810 жыл бұрын
Hello Richard; I have had a lot of experience with the posi temp cartridge. Made a number of videos on Moen faucets and one was the posi temp. I also made videos on removing a moen cartridge and tips and tricks I believe the tool you were looking for was a Moen puller. It was made for removing the cartridge on their single lever bath and shower faucets. There are number of things to try before making that purchase. There is a very good chance that you will remove it without the tool. t comes with a little plastic tool that you use to turn the cartridge before pulling it out. that is the secret to the cartridge coming out easy. You can pull on the cartridge until the cows come home, but if you turn the cartridge back and forth; it will come out much easier. I made another on what to do if the plastic tool should fail. Thanks for commenting and I hope your repair goes well for you! Al

Why did you only replace one side? What about the other side?
@TheOldkid8889 жыл бұрын
+vickeeevick In this video I am demonstrating how to remove and install the cartridge. Both cartridges are removed and installed the same way. I generally replace both stems or cartridges whenever I am repairing a faucet. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

Hi! I was trying to replace the cartridge of a leaky Moen Bathroom Faucet, but when I removed the handle, the lower prt covering the cartridge did not come off. all efforts to rotate it counter clockwise failed because it is shiny chrome and wont budge. Please advise. Thanks. Waqar

+Waqar Kingravi The shiny escutcheon (sleeve) pulls directly straight out. If you work it up and down a little it should loosen enough to pull off for you. Thanks for commenting and have a great day! Al

I know this video is old but do yourself a huge favor and DO NOT USE channel locks on that brass compression nut holding the cartridge in. YOU WILL DAMAGE IT! If you damage or strip that fragile little nut you will have RUINED your faucet. You will not be able to find that nut in a regular hardware store and will most likely have to special order it or replace the entire faucet. They make hexagonal tools that can very easily and safely remove that nut. You can also use an adjustable wrench IF you are GENTLE. The nut is very thin and made of brass which is a soft metal and your hard steel tools can easily damage it.

My Faucet is so old the shut-offs are impossible to shut off. We have very hard water with lots of lime. Penetrating oil doesn't seem to work, how about vinegar? Don't want to break the shut off obviously!
@TheOldkid8888 жыл бұрын
Hello Nikki, You could turn the water off at the main and shut down the entire house. This will prevent you from doing any damage to the connections under the sink and allow you to make the repair. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al

LOL by no means am I a plumber. I watched your video and said "I can do this" Well it was a good thing my husband was home. Nothing said about turning off your water. Duhhhhh maybe you should remake the video for non plumbing woman like me and include. TURN OFF your WATER FIRST. Other then that thanks. I got it done.

Thank you for the video. I have a Moen 6610 that is only two years old and the hot water side is leaking; I cannot get the top cap off - driving me crazy and I have had to turn the water off under the sink till I can figure this out. Also - Is it possible, given the age (2 years w/little use) that all it needs is to be tighten down or o-ring replacement. Also - since I had a professional plumber install the fixture; how does the receipt "thing" work? I have his receipt, but anyone could make one of these up. www.moen.com/brantford/chrome-two-handle-low-arc-bathroom-faucet/_/R-CONSUMER%3A6610;jsessionid=3ecdc029d2e8f8df463b7344bd24

Hello croc adile, Most faucets you remove the cap and tighten down a screw. With this faucet you hold the handle and turn the piece below the handle that is covering the cartridge to the left. The handle should come right off for you. Tightening the cartridge will probably not fix your leak for you. You will have to remove the cartridge and install a new washer and spring. Your best bet is to call the Moen 1-800 number in your case and tell them your situation. They will mail you new parts to make the repair. Probably a few washers and springs along with new cartridges. Very good to deal with especially where the faucets are relatively new. One thing to mention about the faucet leaking...A lot has to do with water quality. The better it is...the better any faucet will perform for you. Thanks for commenting and let me know how you get along! Al

Hi Al, You made a difference in someone's life today - God bless you! Taking that off was a snap and all I did was clean the valve, the 2 o-rings looked and felt fine, but there was some "crud" on the valve between the 2 o-rings, which I wiped off. Cleaned the inside where the main threads of the facet are, then reinstalled and no drip at all.

croc adile Thank you so much! I am glad it went well for you! Sometimes cleaning it will removes just that little bit of dirt that is causing the leak. Congrats on making the repair. Sure beats shutting the faucet off from underneath! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al
