How to Repair an AC Compressor Clutch

The bearings in the AC compressor pulley often wear out. Diagnosing, removing and rebuilding the clutch is a simple matter of disassembling and replacing the bearing.
When the A/C clutch wears out, it is often noisy when the A/C is turned off.

At 3:36, when he flings the clutch, the spacer/washer falls out. That is very crucial. If you follow this video, make sure you don't lose that piece

NEVER SUPPORT THE OUTER PART OF THE PULLEY WHILE PRESSING THE BEARING IN OR OUT...YOU CAN WARP THE PULLEY!!! The best thing to do is support the inner most part of the pulley as close to the bearing as possible. I know this is an old video but I hope this helps someone avoid a huge headache.

Thanks Burner. I had a problem with the middle where the clutch separated from the magnet so I had three segments spinning at once. A gear puller is such an important tool!

Great "How to Video! I'm gonna tackle mine shortly. Fortunately I have a strap wrench, an impact wrench and a 20 ton floor press to complete the job. The seal and bearing driver kits are available for cheap at Harbor Freight Tools. That was one heck of a pipe wrench and gear puller. But as they say, use what you got.

Dude, you need to invest in a cordless impact. That 10mm bolt is trivial with an impact gun. Just took mine apart and will replace the bearing based on your awesome advice. Thanks!

What if I’m hearing a weird rattly squeaky sound if I run the AC, but it stops when I cut the AC off?
@russtbird

Could be that the clutch mechanism friction material is worn down so you are hearing a metal to metal squeal? If so replace the clutch mechanism with bearing included.

You make me want to buy a 986 and drop a lot of money fixing it. Did you have service records when you bought yours? How many miles and what was the condition? You seemed to have done everything to yours. While I don't mind wrenching on the car, I certainly don't want to spend my weekends replacing all the parts on my 986, especially since I plan on tracking it. If and when I do get one, I need to make sure the IMS is fixed, but everything else you've done seems reasonable.
@BurnersCars
@BurnersCars 7 жыл бұрын
DO IT! It's a mid-engine Porsche for under $10k... who could say no to that ;) I bought my 986 with 75k miles. I have since put a little over 25k miles on her. (I buy cars I want to drive!) She seemed like she was in good condition, but there were basically no service records. Of course a car this old is going to require a little wrenching, I've used my 986 as a dd and have been very pleased, overall.
@jscricca
@jscricca 7 жыл бұрын
Burner's Cars given what you know now, would you rather; buy a cheaper 986 with more work and parts need, or pay a premium for a 986 with service records? Also, have you driven a 987? Do you think it's worth the extra money? thanks again
@BurnersCars
@BurnersCars 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think service records are a must. I've owned my 986 for a little over a year, now, and it seems my initial assessment was correct: the car was well maintained. That said, I think I would recommend a better, more expensive 986 over a cheaper 986 that needs work. I haven't driven the 987, so I can't offer any insight, there. Good luck with your car search, and let me know what you find!
