I show how to repair chimney flashing using tar. leaks in this area can turn into thousands of dollars of repairs.
I am an amazon affiliate , Shopping through my link doesn't cost you a thing, but I get a small fee when you do. Thanks! amzn.to/2VKQjIV

At 2:50, why does that side not have tar over the top edge of the flashing like the other 3 sides? Thanks, was going to "think outside the box" and use 100% silicone, but after watching this I bought the Henry wet patch, the "Extreme" version which costs significantly more. But I won't take a chance it will last "20 years"..more like 2 years to patch up any small holes or at least inspect it. Plus every year spray on some clear waterproof stuff over the bricks and mortor. I'd have never known the area was leaking (once again) till I was in the bedroom and happend to notice the rain water running down the walls. I have beautifully finished oak floors, God thanks that I noticed it and was able to stop it immediately by placing some plastic storage tubs up in the attic. Now I have crumbled plaster ceiling and partially bubbled up paint on a wall to fix up (major work). But after this it will be my anual to maybe bi-anual thing to get on a ladder and do any patch work on that flashing. BTW this house was built in 1950 and all of the mortor and quite a few bricks were heavily deteriorating, I fudge packed it with two tubes of Sticka "masonary repair" calk rubbing it in using heavy duty gloves. I don't how much I can trust that calk, but it seemed to me to be the best way to deal with it.

That was a great attempt, however I fear you may end up with another leak. Tar never lasts for stopping leaks, it just slows them down. The flashing is the key to keeping the water out. Would you put that tar on the roof of your car? No? because it looks like ass, right. What you did is an acceptable band aid, just don't rely on it keeping the water out for more than a few years. The next roofer is going to hate you when he sees it, but he'll just tar it too, cause you won't know the difference. I'm not trying to start anything, I just want you to be warned.

BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose I agree, roofers are notorious for doing half fast ( half-assed )jobs. I know because I see them (bad roof repairs) too. I've heard that line before too...."it still doesn't leak". I'd bet it is....it's just not leaking very much.....I will say you did a nice job building your curb around the chimney with the tar. Have you checked it for dampness after a rain? ....in the attic, I mean? until you have, be cautious saying it doesn't leak.

You are going to have to explain why tar doesn't work. Sure its nicer with flashing but tar is waterproof and generally doesn't go anywhere. So where's the beef?

@wigletron2846
@wigletron2846 Жыл бұрын
@@sammiller552 you can pay a pro around $1000 to reflash it and seal up the chimney. If they do it right then no problem. A lot of times it doesn't fix the leak completely and you need to tar it anyway. May as well spend the $50 or so to do it yourself. You could do it 20 times and still save money.

I suspect the issue is this. You have a normal 3 tab shingle on what's looks like a 2 12 pitch. That shingle is wrong for the slope of roof causing water to penetrate. A low slope shingle is needed for that pitch

Ug, we just went thru this over the last two weeks. We were in a slight panic since water was getting into the house and didn't know how long it had been leaking for. Called the roofing company that installed the roof a pinch less then 10 years ago. They came out and it was exactly what you video was about there, the flashing. They resealed everything... and yeah.. changed us. ug.. Now I know I can just do it myself. They said it should be checked and possibly resealed every 5 to 10 years. Well, live and learn I guess. But let it be a warning, check those flashings! :)
@bctruck
@bctruck 10 жыл бұрын
if you dont mind,im curious what they charged you to reseal the flashing?
@Cragfire
@Cragfire 10 жыл бұрын
BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose I don't mind. They charged $150 to reseal the flashing, a long with other minor maintenance. a few shingles were starting to lift slightly, resealed the other two pipes that go thru to the roof (plumbing snorkels?) and resealed along the.. ug, what's it called.. where there is a 90 degree bend in the roof due to a bedroom.. and they installed our 160ft heating cable for the winter. The real test will be the rain storm this Friday. The cable I didn't mind paying for, I'm a big guy, though not afraid of heights being near the edge of a roof is unsettling to say the least.

BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose Just wanted to drop another message of thank you for doing this video. Gave me the courage to get up there and do it myself. After the other company did their work there was still a very slight leak (say they got near 95% of it) - but I got myself a bucket of the stuff and got my self up there today and did it. Glad I did, it was a complete mess, no wonder water was leaking in. patch on top of patch, gaps, ect... I put it on nice and thick and I still have a half gallon left. Anyway, thanks for the video. :) I also have six places where the singles are leaking as well. Ug. :One thing at a time though. :)

I only do copper flashing on all my jobs,I see a cracked brick, motor joints are little bit empty down by the tar .if the roofs old , the flashing was old , you can clearly see that it does need a tuckpoint. maybe even a 4 inch concrete chimney Cap.

James Jarvis well, I’ll tell you what. I’m just a trucker. She had called twice in two years to have “professionals” come stop the leak and neither one did. So she called her freind (me) and asked if I could help. So far it hasn’t leaked in 3 years. So I take what you “pros” say with a grain of salt. She payed 300 to the first pro and 350 to the next one. I fixed it for the cost of a bucket of tar.

+BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose if she paid that for a flashing job. in my opinion,that's a little steep. someone obviously didn't know what they were doing. I do chimneys on million dollar homes. sorry she paid that much,and they didn't fix it. again ,I used tar back in my earlier days on it, it does work. just doesn't look that great. kind of like a trucker,a cop,or any field really. you have good ones,and bad one's. sorry she ran into a bad one.

I just got off my roof, I used the re-inforcement mesh with the "Extreme" rubberised version (Henry's best)..from Home depot. It was messy no doubt, was hard work, but it would be easy to get back up there tomorrow and do another light coat, should I do another coat? What would have made it much easier is if I had made a little cradle device to hold the can cause it was hard keeping the can from falling. The working time on it isn't as much as I expected, it does start to firm up so you have to move along or you won't be able to smooth it out well, I found using a 4" paint brush to spread it worked good after globing it on with a trowel. Charcoal ligher fluid does clean off hands and tools well. This should have been done when the new roof was put on years ago (with the mesh), than I'd only need to get up 1x per year to do some light patching or a light coat, probably not even that frequently. I was told by the roofer who did the re-patching around the chimney about 3 years after it was put up that it should be done every year. I could see why it took him only about 10 minutes, and I'd bet it was the cheapest patching tar they could buy.
