I like the way you did it, Bro.. I want to keep some of the oxidation look, but every shop wants me to do it the way this guy is trying to say you did it wrong. Like there is no other way to do it. I finally found a guy to do it at his home set up to do ii the way I want. I've noticed that some people have a problem thinking out of the box and only know how to do things the way they were taught and do not possess the ability to be openminded or understand that there can be the possibilities of other ways of doing things. Thank You very much for your video.

Well done, other than lack of respirator. I appreciate this because it's a real world process and result. I have undertaken similar recently with an older Infiniti and that's exactly what it looked like after clear coat. Granted, I did a more thorough job in sanding down beforehand, applying 2K primer and also metallic base coat. There are other videos like Ratchets and Wrenches that offer a more professional looking version. They also know what camera angles to use and which ones to avoid. It fools the layman into believing that is what their homemade version will look like. Nope, yours will look like this. I did the entire car. Obviously it is a learning process. Eventually I figured out how to apply dust coats with the metallic base coat. And to use a $5 handle attachment with the clear coat to allow more of a flowing motion for some nice wet coats. After a couple of weeks I wet sanded the clear coat with 1000 grit to remove orange peel, and then clear coated again. Then I waited some more before sanding with 2000 and then 3000 before polishing with advanced compound and polishing finish. Yeah, I got carried away but the compliments from family and friends are worth it.

Thank you! Also, thanks for sharing your experience. Like you said, it was a learning experience. I'll see how it comes out when I do the roof and I'll also get a proper respirator

@@TobiasHolenstein Along with respirator you should get an aerosol spray gun attachment. That tool makes it much easier to flow the clear coat. I got this one: www.amazon.com/Can-Gun1-2012-Premium-Aerosol-Spray/dp/B002EQEE82 I believe a Rust-Oleum version is cheaper than that at Walmart, etc.

@@hhicks2979 You are welcome. I'm very glad I did it but I had to learn self forgiveness. Errors are inevitable. The hood was toughest. Spray cans work best when held in vertical position. Initially I got drips when held horizontally, like this video. That is especially true of base coat. Finally I read to warm the can for 15 minutes, placing in a plastic bag inside a coffee cup full of warm water. That all but eliminated drips. But don't do similar with clear coat. The warmth increases dripping. I learned that the hard way. I used automotivetouchup.com for my base coat and supplies. I am not affiliated with them. Their products are very good and reasonably priced. But they sell lacquer primer instead of 2K. I had a bad result with bleeding through the lacquer. So I redid with 2K. World of difference. This video helped me learn the dust coat technique. But it is only necessary with metallic base coat, like I have. He demonstrates how to flow the clear coat: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ-sfYaHpMSmrKs

A tip if you are trying to fix CC in a metallic finish, you must not sand the raw metallic finish as you are cutting the metal and other such metallic components in the paint. Metallic colour coat is never sanded once laid down as this damages it. This is why it looks patchy. If you can use a blunt scraper to lift of the crazed clear coat, mask the raw areas off allowing the mask to expose the edge of the remaining clear the clear coat several coats over the exposed metallic and clear coat exposed edge. Then take away the masking, carefully feather sand the over lap spray trying not to remove the protective clear coat you now have protecting the metallic paint. Once you have done your best feathering the clear overlap, sand the whole hood or roof and then clear coat the lot for your final finish. This technique will never produce perfect results but it does a good job at greatly improving the overall look. I have used this technique many times and as long as the base coat hasn’t been cut with sanding or polish or has faded badly then it’s a real winner as a diy CC repair.

Great video. Failed clear-coat is common where I live in the evil CA sun. People fight to park in the shade in parking lots in summer. It looks horrid on a dark car. My 1996 Plymouth minivan looks much worse than yours, esp. where I repainted accident damage and used cheap rattle-can clear-coat (not activated type) which later turned flaky white. I found the bulk of the failed clear-coat can be scaped off with a dull putty knife, before going to wet-sanding. I did that for several years to keep it looking presentable without even re-spraying. I have less work on the top since the clear-coat is almost all gone there and even the base-coat some places to expose the primer. I think I'll paint the top w/ left-over white polyurethane "boat paint" (Interlux Brightside) which I used on my camping trailer. On a flat roof, it will look like the 2-tone of many Ford Flex. The hood and sides I might paint with single-stage car paint (modern looking grey-blue color) if enough left after painting another car.

To do a final clean use wax and grease remover. What you used is a dust mask not a respirator and doesn't do a thing to protect you from isocyanates. A respirator mask for auto painting has a rubber face piece and replaceable charcoal filters which have to be replaced after so many hours. With a respirator you won't be able to smell the solvent. They also make them with full face masks and a visor. For full protection you also wear a Tyvek suit that also protects your skin.

Greetings! Very good effort! But you're actually not done yet. You still need to wet sand with very fine grit sandpaper. Once you get done sanding it's going to look dull and really bad almost like you just ruined it . But not to worry it's not ruined. The wet sanding is going to take out imperfections and get rid of the overlap streaks from the spray can. After wet sanding ... you're going to use use a Polish to bring it to bring back the shine. Its going to be a brilliant glass-like shine. without the overlap streaks when done!

Good video however I think you would of gotten a better result by spraying the clear wetter meaning you should of sprayed it from closer first coat should be a scratch coat from the farthest of all coats and then progressively as each coat is layed down closer to the project ya want a deep shine and a deep shine needs a thicker coat when everything is said and done but progressively it's a horozontal surface so there should be minimal orange peel if it runs ya might have to wetsand

So, is that called dust coating? Start from further back when you begin and then get closer each coat. How close are we talking? The concern is (like you mentioned) having runs or horizontal lines. I am learning as much as I can because my whole car is peeling it's clear and have learned so much from these comments. However, I thought there would be an easier/cheaper way. What a pain in the ***. 3rd car that's done it now. And fixing it is starting to seem to costly, at least for me.

@@TobiasHolenstein Well, it must be an earlier model '77. I'll look for that future Celica vlog.I really am into cars, as well.I would memorize the license plate numerals on several of the neighbors cars, and know the years of them. I like the Sepulveda Dam for your channel image art. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. To build the San Diego Freeway, which first opened in 1963, half of our backyard was used for the southbound lanes, just north of Roscoe Blvd. I have a plat map from 1959 where it shows the future location of the freeway, and how much land was used from our house, and the neighbor's to build it. I thought that you might enjoy some little known Valley trivia, since you are a younger man than I am. Do you live in the valley yourself? I'll watch more of your vlogs. I wish you the best for this upcoming new year! You may ask me some questions re: valley history, if it is of interest to you. I probably know more than people would expect. Keep up the great work. You are supposed to have a respirator on. Did you read up on how to do the job before doing it, or did you just go ahead and wing it? Because if wing it, and you mess it up, it's going to be pretty hard to fix it. I wouldn't say that it looks "Really good," but it is better than it was. You are not supposed to use spray cans on the hood.

Not bad definitely get a quality respirator and your 2nd and 3rd coat go slower to get a heavier wet look for coverage and it wont look streaky and blotchy and save you some time in a cut and buff situation..

Man when you said you though it was ready for clear I was yelling at my phone NO NO NO KEEP GOING ITS NOT READY!! BUT I DO GIVE YOU POINTS FOR BEING HONEST AT LEAST! With that said doing a dyi video is for people to learn from others! Would you go fly a plane for the first time by yourself from watching a video. It you answered yes my cat might be smarter than you lol. The correct answer is no so why would you teach someone else to fly a plane if you never done it before. You wouldn't! My point wait til you have done something a few times with excellent results before teaching others. Definatly stay away from plane idea or let me know where you'll be flying so I can avoid that area! Have a good one! If it makes you feel any better I have seen worse but not by much.

I did this to my car last month. I even added the base coat first. Was not happy with the results. Plus I got over spray all over my garage. Should of just had the car painted for $600. If you are willing to wet sand and buff then go ahead. I wouldn’t recommend if you are picky.

Ok so it does look better your scotchbright would also work better wet, but you needed to do more and get those light bits out. Using a machine meant that you wouldnt be able to better follow the curves and pressings of the hood doing it by hand you would have used 80 grit lightly and worked to 2000 grit your paint plan wasnt good, start in the middle and work out to prevent the risk of having a thatched look alternate a coat that goes side to side across the hood when you put paint on your height and speed were way to inconsistent, you can practice that out making runs without paint, its a memory thing if you cant do that then run at the thin or light speed and use 5 coats also you need to overlap the paint application by 50% into the last spray run have a good one ...

Everyone wants to know which spray can brand to use... lol. You don’t. You get a boothe-you sand till smooth with 1500-you re base coat- then 1 shallow coat 2k clear. Wait 5 min- final glass like finish with clear. No amount of “polishing can fix it from there.

i would have used 80 grit and taken it back to bare metal. prepped it fro primer. sprayed primer hit that with 400 wet. then sprayed the black base coat over the top. 4 coats possibly . then let dry for a few hours then hit with a light coat of clear let set for 15 to 20 mins let it flash off then hit it with a wet coat of clear. would have been alot easier and quicker than trying to rub the bonnet (hood) back with scotch brite or 1500 wet. A for effort though Even if you rubbed it back with a cut n polish you might have been able to cut the paint back enough to clear over the top of it again.

This looks typical for a first timer, acceptable anyway. But a couple tips from a guy with about 50 years of doing these kind of fixes. First, your homemade paper discs , very amusing. Didn't they tell you at the supply shop they make them already round? And also you can get the scotchbrite in the same shape in sticky back or velcro. Most people don't know this but the clear-coat on the newer cars is a plasti-coat, that's why the white edges and the ledge on the edge of it. That's also why you don't see this kind of paint damage on the older cars, 70's and earlier .
@rustytruck7571

Oh yeah, I forgot , If you go to Car Quest , they can match your factory paint in a rattle can. Take the code off the door and they'll mix it right there, put it in the can and it's only a $20 bill.

it went wrong when you spent 2 hours scuffing. simply get it flat. the wetsanding on the orbiatal was funny tho. that likely got everything so uneven that the quality clearcoat wouldnt even lay flat. anyone reading go check out just about any other video on how to do this right.

That is incorrect. You start from one side and work you way across, usually stopping somewhere around the middle or however far you can reach. Then reposition to the other side and pick up where you left off. It’s called “keeping the wet edge” or something like that lol. Basically, if you do it your way, start in the middle and work out, by the time you go to the other side, that clear coat in the middle of the hood has already started to dry and the overspray won’t melt into it nice and will leave you with something that looks dry and spotty.
