Hey, it’s Tony. Thank you for watching this Google Hangout video. Today, I’m going to show you how to repair dents with body filler.
I am going to do some sanding on the Mazda Miata using 80-grit sandpaper and DA sander. Then, fill all the dents. Make sure to wear a mask so you don’t breathe on the bondo dust.
I put circles around the dents using magic markers to mark what I need to fix. I’m not going to do PDR (Paintless Dent Removal). We’re going to sand down, skim coat and fill.
I have a big dent that I pulled out with a stud welder. The rest are small dents that we’ll sand down and fill up.
When working near door handles or chrome pieces, you can protect them by taping them up or pop the door open.
A can of bondo that hasn’t been used for a couple of months will have a glazed substance on top. You have to mix it well back into the filler until you get the nice, even consistency.
I’ve tried different types of bondo and it’s not really the type of bondo that makes the pinholes. I think you lessen the pinholes by the way you lay it and apply it.
Same thing for the hardener. You make sure to mix it up really well.
Make sure to clean your applicator really well. It should be smooth otherwise you’ll have marks when you lay your putty on.
You don’t want to mix up too much that you’ll end up wasting. Ideally, the mixture should be 6-8 drops of hardener for every golf ball size of bondo. You can also adjust your hardener and lessen it to give you more time to lay it on and shape it.
This is just an overview of the project. The complete, step-by-step work that I do with this Miata will be in the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP course so check out the course now and learn DIY auto body work.
I’ll show you in-depth work on all kinds of projects like body kit fabrications, painting with pearls, candies and flakes and a whole lot more.
We have hours of HD training videos and continuously updating the course with new videos every year. You will have access to all of these as a lifetime VIP member.

Cool video Tony! I play all your videos in my shop screen. Thanks for taking the time to upload this kind of work. I've been a drywall finisher since I was 8 years old with my dad. I know what it's like to be in a trade most your life. I like learning from the best when I try something new. No way will I ever let anyone touch my bodywork and paint after learning lots from you. I know I can do it now thanks to you. I will become a VIP member soon.

I have been repairing classic cars since 1975, and own several that's what she said, I have assisted in painting a couple of them, but I have never had the confidence to paint my own until now, after watching tons of your videos, I think it time to turn over a new leaf, and I am excited about that thank you.

So Tony, regarding Hangouts from your computer, check the outputs on your camcorder. Does it have anything compatible with your Macbook? If so try to connect the camcorder and see if the laptop recognizes it as a video camera and mic. If not then take both items into the Apple store and they can hook you up with the right converters (USB, FireWire, HDMI, whatever your camcorder has). Then you can get an extension cable like 15-20' and start the hangout on your laptop but set it off to the side away from the dust and mess, and just use the camcorder to go around the car. You just have so stay within the limits of the max specs for the cable length; it differs for each type of technology. Another option would be to run the Hangout on your smartphone and use a tripod mount for it. That would work but smartphone mics are terrible unless you are really close to the phone, so I think the camcorder connected to the Macbook would be best. You have to start recording on the camcorder for the signal to be sent out to the laptop. I enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing your expertise!

Thanks for the helpful video. Unfortunately, the filler that I bought in Japan sets way too fast to spread it smoothly after a few seconds. They call it bumper putty (for fender repair).

You need an assistant to shoot your video. Hey. I am restoring my 91 Caddy Brougham. The hood has some dings in the front of the hood. I had to build up the center line towards the front. I used filler and it looked and felt smooth but there was bare metal exposed. I think I sanded too much off because after I epoxy primered. I see the paint line around the repair. I thought two coats of epoxy would hide it. Should I just apply the bondo over the edge of the paint?

Hi Tony! I have a question for you if you dont mind. If the car is already with primer and one finds out that still needs more body filler,Can the body filler be put over the primer? Or do I need sand out the primer? Thanks.

For minor door dings, is it necessary to use Bondo ? Or could one just use a glaze ?
@HowToPaintYourCar
@HowToPaintYourCar 9 жыл бұрын
Scott H You can use glaze...and we will cover that as we progress further in the project. because at this stage, we are trying to get the noticeable dents. Then, after primer and blocking... when we notice rock chips, nicks, deep scratches and small ripple dents. Then we would go over with glaze. I already have this in close-up and in-depth detail within the VIP section of the site. Check out this video here: www.learnautobodyandpaint.com/vip-offer Talk soon Scott!

Lead repair is really outdated. Some old schoolers do it, bit not very many. I have never messed with it. My father had back in the late 60's...

You keep setting your DA down, paper side down on the floor, not good. Can pick up larger pieces of dirt (grit) from floor causing deeper scratches than the paper grit you're using.
@HowToPaintYourCar
@HowToPaintYourCar 7 жыл бұрын
Nahh.. it's not even close to finishing stage. That I would worry about when final wet sanding. have never had an issue, besides the shop floor is clean, just dust. Maybe if you're working in dirt outside, then I would just set it on it's side...
