When I was 25 yrs old in 1977 I had to learn to paint by using books available at that time. The paints available were lacquer and enamel. I did a total of 3 cars learning as I went along. I found out the hard way about putting lacquer over enamel without sealing the previous paint or removing it all the way to bare metal. This will come up in your work when you are doing work on cars from the era before the use of clear coats over color. I am not an auto body man now or then either. I just bought cars that were needing bodywork and got them cheap to sell them later. I have seen a lot of auto body videos lately and I have not heard anyone say to put more clear on the front of a car so to be able to buff them out in the future without getting into the color. This makes a difference because if you are going to drive it you will be getting scratched and bugs and chipped areas to fix. If you have a very thin clear coat on the car you will be digging into the color a lot of the time making it a bigger problem than a scratch in the clear coat. Please excuse me if I got any of the words wrong relating to the old type of paints

I, also painted a few cars in the 70s and it was lacquer and enamel. I'm going to jump back in with the new stuff like base and clear coats. I got my glossy shine back in those days with a lot of wet sanding, polishing and buffing.

I came across your videos while trying to research what possibilities are out there for a pretty bad paint job on a Mustang GT I was hoping to buy. (Trim/door handles all painted, nobody taped anything off, orange peel, dry spray, runs etc) Other than redoing the entire thing, there is no way out of it. (and for the price they're asking, it is totally not worth it! Unfortunately.) So, now, I spent the past few hours digging around your KZbin channel and learning how to do some fancy stuff lol. My husband is very impressed with your videos (not that that means anything but, lol, he is a perfectionist and is irate about this GT and thinks you do flawless work!) I'm a new subscriber! I am a girl, yes, but, this is all so fascinating to me and I think it's great how you make this all seem so easy and are so enthusiastic and positive for newbies!

I like that you do things realistically. I learned stuff from the one where the guy takes 750 hours to sand a Corvair door, but I'll never spend that much time with a 48" sanding block of 27000 grit sandpaper while standing in a kiddie pool. I like that you rarely get below 400 and use machines for your initial sanding. It gives me hope that I can get this project done.

Best case, I learn from guys like you, do a great job and save a bunch of money and get to have pride in a job well done.

Fog the hood on the last base coat to spread the metal flake uniformly and to avoid tiger stripes. Also on the last clear coat on the hood start from the edge to center and center to other edge so that there is less dried out clear. Also when covering primer areas, do a small batch of concentrated base coat 70/30 to cover up the primer areas faster, saves time and material. I would like to learn how to spray a perfect paint job ( no orange peel, no specs of dirt/base/clear, no runs, etc) that requires no buffing. Do you buff your paint jobs? If so why?

Great Instructional Video, I am not new to auto repair, I was an auto Mech. for 18 years, but I have never painted a car, I am in the middle of restoring a 66 Chevelle and now due to the current economical environment I have decided to paint the car myself and one of my biggest worries was turning my shop into the color that I will be applying to the car but you have shown that will not be the case and you have given me that much more confidence to do this myself, the car is down to bare metal so now my next step will be to start applying filler where it needs, +I will then move onto after all the filler is smoothed out to applying a coat of epoxy primer is this a good idea for the next step? I have to you are very good,

I have a question... :-) I’m trying to paint a car now but here’s a couple questions of you can please help... I see you painted the car and used the oem paint that was sanded as a surface to spray paint... I didn’t realize you didn’t have to prime the entire car... so if I have an area that I used filler to fill a small dent... Would I prime JUST that area and then anywhere the OEM paint is in ok shape I’d just sand it with 400 and then after cleaning am ready to spray? My next question is very important to me.... I’m sanding with 320... so if I sand the entire car with 320 and then spray a 2K basecoat will I see sand scratches in my finished product or do I NEED to sand with 400 instead. I think the last thing I painted I sanded the OEM basecoat with 320 grit.. then sprayed it with primer.... but what if I skipped the primer if it wasn’t needed due to the paint underneath being in good shape and then sprayed my 2k basecoat over the 320 scratches.. would it show in the final product? Thanks a million!!!

Is it bad practice for home diy garage warrior to shoot base on full paint job and wet sand it days later then clear? Or do i need to shoot the whole car in base again?

What a remarkable paint job bro. I would like you to teach me and cone help me. Repaint my 02 chev prizim. It has some little defects and spots of rust starting. But nothing major. But, the problem is don't have the tools or space to do a repaint job at. I would come to where you are. I would buy all the paint and stuff. I need to have you help me touch up my car.

What’s your opinion on plastic adhesion promoter. Is it necessary?
@HowToPaintYourCar5 жыл бұрын
It’s good practice to use it on raw plastic... Then you can lay your primer on top of it sand it and paint it 😀

Thank you, vary helpful. I'm planing on painting my car for cheap hopefully and I'm curious could i just use cans of spray paint and still end up with a good to ok job or do cans just do s!#% job compared to paint guns? and it doesn't have to perfect but just not bad. I'm only planing on painting 1 car and for as cheap as possible so i would like to avoid getting a paint gun. i would really appreciate some help or at least a comment? thanks
