Great video! I have a Snapper Z1404K ZTR that has had a 16hp Vanguard swapped on a few years back. Spring mowing season is here, so I changed the oil and filter (both B&S spec as I have done for the 10 yrs I have owned the mower) and after a half hour of mowing "BAM! CRUNCH!" , so I shut her down quick. Checked the oil, level fine, let her cool off, starts up fine, but no power under load. I believe I have experienced the governor failure that seems common to these engines. I think my uncle paid nearly $5k for the mower in the mid 90's, and my aunt had trouble with the original 14hp engine after he passed away and she had the new 16hp installed (around $2k after install (!)). It has been a great, trouble free mower (and was free to me), so I want to keep it going! Thanks again!

Really appreciate this video. My governor had seized and dug into the crankcase making the hole oval etc. Applying your technique to clean up the shaft and re-seat it using JB Weld was essentially my original thought, but I didn't know if the shaft was supposed to spin or in fact be pressed in. You answered that and confirmed my game plan. Thank you!

Thanks so much for posting this fix. I have the identical problem with mine and after taking it apart and seeing the problem, your video answered all of my questions I had while cleaning it up and gathering all the little broken pieces. Excellent instructions...

I so admire your skills and courage to tear apart and dive in to assess and repair--you're right in that "if it's broke...maybe there's little to lose"---I'm also struck quite often as to how much material/energy/etc are wasted (and charged to the consumer for a total replacement item) when a small part causes the complete "uselessness" of a complex machine such as this one--I'm guessing there's a complete lack of shame on the part of the designing /engineering/marketing folk who make the waste of all this inevitable--

I just removed my Briggs & Stratton intek 25HP v twin from my Scotts 2546 and had exactly the same problem. The governor gear had seized to the shaft and spun in the crank case until the whole assembly fell into the sump, destroying the fly weights as it went. There was enough room to get in a 90 degree drill and tap so I put an 8--32 set screw in also to help hold the shaft.

So back again to thank you. Motor is running better, not surging, and just some backfires which I think I'll be able to adjust out. Ultimately I think your assessment that the carb was clogged was on point. I really do appreciate your help!

Man thanks alot for the video I like it because you went right to the problem you didn't talk about stuff that didn't even relate to what you were doing like some other videos I have seen 👍👍 two thumbs up

Thank you so much for your quick response! I checked the carb carefully. Seems completely clean except I did see a slight bit of corrosion on a couple screws, hinting that there may have been water in the fuel. I did a partial re-build on the carb, blew it out etc. and the injectors appear to be OK. The reason why it's a "partial" rebuild is that some of the screws are so soft, I can't get them out without destroying them. Did a full soak, but am a bit concerned that I see the throttle jumping.

Using Mustles video, I took my B&S twin apart, the governor weights had blown apart just like this vid describes, so I'm off to buy the governor cog as he says. So very thorough howto, thank you. Not very impressed with B&S motors as a result, esp if this is a known problem. What I would like to know is how to get the darn thing to idle slowly and rev more at full throttle. Thats why I was fiddling with the governor and why it responded by falling to bits.??
@HomeGrownPyro12 жыл бұрын
You may have to change some springs around. I just got done setting one up on a go kart for my daughter and took me a little to figure it out. However, if you loosen the nut on the throttle linkage it will allow you to move it Bach and fourth easily and with a spring installed in the opposite direction then the throttle cable, it will return to slow idle.

By the looks of all the people with the same problem , looks like Briggs&Straton are making junk engines . I have two B&S motors , one 19.5 hp ,with nikki carb ( carb is also a piece of junk , and one 19hp . Both opposing pistons , same governor I think , both have speed control issues , removed the governor on one , now runs super with a gas pedal , the other will be done over winter .

l think you may want to try another carb, it sounds like it may have blocked passages, if you try to hold it at idle and it just dies, thats your problem,,

Old mustie! I just got one of these mowers Had a blown out pan gasket, common issue apparently. Engine is open right now, looking for something extra to check out while it's apart!

Ive got a Allis Chalmers rider with the Professional series Briggs Twin, it runs fine but there is no throttle control, it runs one speed, Ive set the governor as you set forth, and Ive replaced the O Rings inside the Carb and it still runs at a fast only speed, no adjustment no matter what you do with the Throttle. Im going to assume the Governor has broken and begin the rebuild process.

I replaced the governor gear on my 20 hp intek, but it still races even in idle. Had the same problem as you, with the gov gear seizing on the pin. No idea why it is still happening, unless the little retaining washer is slipping out.

Thanks so much for the video. I'm a beginner and am trying to fix my dad's tractor by replacing the governor. I can't unbolt the motor; just can't seem to get enough torque. Should I buy a pneumatic gun?

Thanks , I have my v twin pulled apart . I can’t get the gear off the shaft it’s seized on there. Any suggestions .?
@jnarowe11 жыл бұрын
Wow! Great video. So to clarify, do you feel the cause of engine surging is a broken governor? I can see the throttle pulsing up and down, and the engine does not run clean at any choke setting. It's the exact same engine as in your video.
@danielstopka13135 жыл бұрын
I have a question i can barely feel the groove in the shaft for the retainer. Was this one very deep? I don't see how it will hold it in place.

Do you think the feet on the counter weights were ground flat from years of use? I'm doing this job now, and the feet on the original counter weights look much more worn than the new counter weights. I think the feet eventually wore down until they were no longer able to hold the thimble on the shaft anymore...
@genesloan31756 жыл бұрын
Have never seen this type of failure. Governor counter weights are sometimes the culprit, but never seen that stud be failure point . For fix !

My 18.5 briggs was running good then all the sudden it was racing. Is the governor the cause for that? It wont throttle down at all.

I can't seem to reply with a video of my own. I thought that was a feature of youtube! Anyway, I posted one on my channel, post thorough carb cleaning. I can get it to run cleaner by playing with the choke, but it will shut off if I pull the choke all the way out.

my pin broke off so i drilled it out it drilled very easy but you cant buy a new pin i got lucky and found a good one off ebay so im waiting for parts lol

Same issue here, Idk about pounding that pin all the way in, I haven't done the JB Weld yet but, with the pin all the way in, the snap ring won't seat... Please help
@cliocrew33316 жыл бұрын
I thought I might use the old snap ring as a stop so, the pin doesn't go in too far ?
@kellymorris89916 жыл бұрын
Good point. Don't get me wrong......this video is wonderful and I appreciate it. I followed this video and after the JB weld set I found the grove in the shaft for the snap ring was too low. Wish I had thought to control the depth the shaft went into the hole before I bonded it. I ended up sliding the snap ring down as far as it would go and used a little JB weld on the snap ring to hold it in place. Hope it works!
@cliocrew33316 жыл бұрын
Kelly Morris Me too, mine works good so far. It helped to drill a 1/16" hole in the bottom of the hole for air relief too
