Thanks for your helpful video. The wiring diagram was excellent in understanding this simple, yet archaic series circuit. I changed the freezer light and all the other lights came back on. I didn’t remove any of the freezer drawers. I was able to get the light removed just by opening the freezer and reaching up. Thanks again for your time and effort to pull together a video and upload it to KZbin.

Just replaced my freezer light with success. Found one at McCombs Supply online for $42. Took about 20 minutes to pry out the original light. Yes it was a pain. Had a small issue when disconnecting the wire connector. I squeezed the small plastic lock but wire still wouldn’t unplug. Grabbed a pair of pliers and after pulling with moderate pressure, it finally released. Turns out a small piece of insulation was stuck to it. Plugged new light into the connector and all worked well. Fit pretty snugly into the existing hole but I didn’t replace the small amount of insulation that I dug out during the extraction nor did I use any putty around the new light. Hoping that won’t affect the light performance. Bonus, after replacing the freezer light, all lights in the fridge now work! Thanks for sharing this helpful video.

Thank you for this video. This was my exact problem. I just removed the freezer led and put a jumper wire across the terminals of the connector, and the lights on the top of the fridge immediately came on. I do not plan to replace the freezer led because there is enough light from the ceiling lights above to see what's in the freezer drawer. A zero cost solution! Thanks again.

Just went through this process, maybe this will save someone else a bit of time. Firstly, thx Bearded one for making this information available to all us DIY-ers. If you have interior side lights working and flickering interior ceiling lights read on. If you have good interior side lights remove one. Pry it out carefully, they are a pain in the but to get out. Start in the freeze as the bearded one suggests. Remove the freezer light and swap for the interior side light you removed previously. If that works, and your ceiling lights are back on you're almost done! You can leave the side light in the freezer and replace the side light when you get a new one, or remove the freezer bulb and jump the connector so the rest of the lights work. You have identified the bad bulb. If replacing the freezer bulb with the known good side bulb doesn't fix your ceiling lights, then the freezer bulb is probably good. Replace the freezer bulb and move onto the interior ceiling lights. Start on the left side ceiling. Those bulbs are singles. Try swapping the front one with the good bulb. If that works you have identified the bad bulb. I'd leave the good side light in ceiling since they are such a pain to remove. If replacing the left front bulb doesn't fix the problem, try the back bulb, same process. If it works then you have found the problem. If the freezer, and both left ceiling bulbs are good then you need to try the ceiling right. These are a bit of a pain because they are not separate bulbs they are wired together and you need to remove the ceiling panel to get to the connector. Look for Bearded video on ice maker replacement, that will show you how to get the right side top panel off. Once you get the panel off, and disconnect the 3-light assembly, plug in the known good side light. If that causes the lights of the left to come on then you've identified that one, or more, of the right side lights is bad. You can buy a new 3-bulb assembly or disassemble the 3 lights and debug them one at a time. After I found my bad bulb, of course it was the last one I tested, I cut the connector off, tied the wires together and plugged it into the empty side spot, now all the ceiling and most of the side lights work. When I get my replacement bulb it will be much easier to replace it on the side. I found one for $17 from applianceparts.com. The part W11462342 was the match for my Kitchenaid as per the Kitchenaid website where they wanted $60. Good luck

Thank you! Your directions and schematic helped me a lot! My model is Kitchen Aid # KRFF507HPS00. About 3 years old. The top lights and freezer light were out. Even though a technician had come and replaced the freezer light about 2 years ago, when it was still on warranty, I choose to replace that one first - thinking it would be the culprit. I got an off-market bulb from Amazon for $20. I replaced the freezer light with it, no go. All the light were just dimply blinking. So I then took the old bulb from the freezer and replaced one of the lights up top. Your schematic helped me choose where to start. The first one I replaced up top was it! All lights including the freezer now work! Thanks also for the suggestions on how to remove the clips holding the freezer drawer in. Worked great, although I would recommend prying up on each clip with a small flathead screwdriver first before prying out. Worked for me. Thanks again!

Thanks for posting!! Your diagnostic procedure was spot on. It was the freezer light. It came out fairly easily since there was a previous service for the same issue under warranty and it was likely the same LED. I shorted the two wires with a screw driver and the refrigerator compartment light lit up. Ordered a clone lamp on Amazon for $42. Seems Whirlpool wants $97.48 for a what is essentially a $5 lamp at best. Also the local parts store was out of Whirlpool OEM lamps at $89 so it must be a booming business. What a rip off!! We need a class actions suit against Whirlpool for using lamps that obviously were not cold tested and certified for use in the freezer and for making windfall profits off their mistake with $97.48 replacement parts and hundreds of dollar service calls for those unfortunate enough to go that route. Does the freeze light trip on when the refrigerator compartment is opened since they are all in series (and vice versa)?

THANKS FOR THIS !! I have the Whirlpool French Door with middle slide out drawer version...the top LEDs started blinking and intermittent about 2 years in, so called for my Lowes Extended Warranty repair....neither he or Whirlpool had ANY idea why this was happening, so they started replacing boards on the back of the fridge...but stopped on the day he was about to replace the motherboard, he called Whirlpool again to say "Check the schematic again because I don't think the motherboard is going to fix this light problem." They agreed, so, rather than replace it, he got into the freezer and "broke" something on purpose (must have been he disconnected the freezer LED module) so they'd have to replace the fridge as a "Lemon" under warranty.... ...but then I find out they DON'T actually bring you a new fridge, they just buy you out with a check and you're on your own to replace it....and the price had gone up about $600 !! 🤬 So we've been living with the dark (but free !🙂) ceiling until now. 🙄 But fast-forward about 4 years, and all my other lights started blinking / strobing last week for about a day, and suddenly the whole refrigerator goes dark ! I thought I was going to have to tear into the walls of the box looking for a bad LED power supply board or common connection problem....😱 Until I found you. ! 🥳♥️ I am shocked Whirlpool was so stupid in this design, putting all these lights in series, with some kind of very poor quality control and defect on these light modules so EVERYBODY's lights are going dead in the same way, AND THE FACTORY AND FIELD SERVICE DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT !!?? 😳🤬

Exactly the fix. Great video and informative. It was my freezer led. I first tried swapping a working side led with a burnt out top one. In the process I tore the connector off the side led. I ended up soldering the new replacement Led in place. But a new Led is sold with quick connectors so yo do not have to mess around with the short wired connections and possibly breaking it. **Note** afterwards I found out the good LED’s had a small dim lit light on them. The “BAD” Led was completely out. (The only one that needed changed) All good all Whirlpool should be embarrassed and ashamed for not recalling these defective LED’s. LED’s should last a minimum of 5 years.

This worked perfectly... I have a KtichenAid 5 drawer model (W10772358). I was afraid of a 3 hour job because of having to empty the freezer and remove all the drawers. I emptied the top drawer only and removed it. I then loosened the freezer LED bulb on all sides, and that helped to break the foam insulation hold on it. After that I got one side out and was able to get the LED bulb out. I did notice when working to remove the old LED bulb, that it started strobing, and as expected so did the other 5 lights in the fridge compartment. I attempted to get that to "not strobe" but was unsuccessful, so I replaced the bulb and reinstalled. All working perfectly!! Many thanks! The total time was about an hour including cleaning up the freezer drawers. :)

Our Freezer has 3 drawers model WRX986S1HZ. We were able to remove the cover door then the 2nd drawer and the large bins on the bottom but we were unable to understand how to remove the top drawer. The top drawer is on metal rails and we could not see any tabs to release the drawer so we pulled it all the way out and laid on the floor on thick yoga mats. We used a 2" putty knife on the back side of the light capsule first and pressed very hard. The whole light capsule poppe l ' d out. But as you said, there was a lot of insulation and we could not see the plastic connector at first. My hubby dug it out. It was hidden to the back not visible. He has no finger nails so I had to press down on the plastic connector an d slide it out. We plugged in the new light part #W10695459CM about $40 and Voila!! This job would have cost us I believe near $400 had we hired a repair man. If you have any tips on how to remove the top drawer in this 3 compartment freezer, I would be delighted to know. So again, thanks a million$$$!!😅😊

I can confirm this also works on the Whirlpool WRX986SIHZ. Had top lights and freezer strobe for a half day, then went out completely. Ordered one replacement light ($42 on Amazon) and took a chance as suggested and started with the freezer light first. Thankfully I did not have the insulation intrusion into the light cavity and was able to just pop it right out with a small flat head screwdriver. Put the new light in and the freezer light immediately came back on. Checked the fridge section top lights and all is working perfectly again. As others have mentioned, it is an insanely frustrating design by Whirlpool (a series bulb circuit...really?!) to not know which bulb is out, but relatively easy to remedy for those that are even a slight bit handy. Thank you so much for the information and video!

Before disconnecting I measured 12V across terminals indicating good voltage in, but light not on. Removed light, and ordered same. It is an absolute scam that Whirlpool provides no schematics or technical data for their junk. The plastic bag over the light also indicates they initiated an engineering change because of your experience, and most likely a bunch of complaints. They put plastic over the light instead of fixing the technical problem with the light. Again, junk.... Problem is, they (Whirlpool) are "best in class" junk out of the pack of junk for sale in the appliance world.

This was awesome! The lights are back on in my Jenn Air. All the lights in the fridge had a very dim light on the LED except one. I ordered a cheap replacement from Amazon, but in the mean time I cut the wires from the bad light and crossed them to act as a jumper.

Whats the name of the replacement that you bought I also need one for my fridge.

Thanks ! Same problem worked with replacing the freezer light. I also question the point of LED if it's supposed to last forever ..I mean the light is only on for maybe a couple minutes a day .....🤦🏽♂️ . Ordered part from Amazon , just look up the part number off the old light.

Great Info in this video. First light I replaced was the freezer light. Everything else came on. I got lucky, it took only 5 minutes to replace, did not even have to pull out the drawer. No insulation issues, popped right out. Thanks, you saved me hundreds of dollars.

Huge thank you. It was the freezer light. My 2018 Whirlpool had plastic around the light so it was fairly easy to take out using a 2” putty knife. I purchased the new led light on Amazon for $79. Your video was huge and saved me $300 that the appliance serviceman said was the cost of a new”Aurora” control board, that would not have fixed the problem. Thanks

Great. What light did you replace it with? Can you provide make and model or link to where you bought it?

Thank you for this video. I was trying to figure out why the upper lights were all dim and it wouldn't have occurred to me that the freezer one would be on the same circuit when the side ones were clearly a different circuit. Sure enough, my freezer one was out.

I DID IT! it was the freezer light and ALL of them came back. And I have a "trick" for digging out the freezer light - didnt have to remove the drawer - used a mirror in the drawer, UTENEW 5pcs Professional Opening Pry Repair Tools Flathead Metal Pry Bars Crowbar, and this once i got it started: Metal Magery Sheet Metal Skin Wedge Pry Bar Tool Door Panel and Trim Removal Tool (One Pack). Funny part - put in new freezer light after digging out the insulation, the freezer light still didnt work but .... Opened the fridge door and EVERY fridge light was on when i only had 2 lights there before!!!. So place a mirror in the drawer and pry that freezer light out with gusto! WAHOOOOOOO!!! Hope this helps!!!

Thanks. I replaced the freezer light like you suggested and the rest of them came on. I didn’t have an insulation problem but the tape that covered the light to prevent the insulation problem created a problem of it’s own being very sticky.

Hi. I have the 5-door/drawer Kitchenaide KRMF706EBS01. What a crappy appliance. I would be fired if i produced a product as bad as this thing is. My lights went out in freezer and also inside. This video is pretty good and confirmed that the lights are on 2 circuits and in series, which was helpful. On another site, it was advised to replace the Driver PCB on back of fridge, but it did nothing other than eat $225. So, i dug into it more. I noticed that the lights were just 'dim' except for one on the top rack and the one in the freezer. Those 2 were totally burned out. I pulled them out, and made a 'connector' to close the circuit and the lights in the circuit came back on. Also, what a massive pain to get the lights out of the fridge body. AS said in the video, they obviously put the light fixtures in and then foam the insulation all around it. Kind of a mess, but i was able to deal with it. I tested the totally burned out lights and for sure they are burned out. I put 3.2 volts DC to them and had no light. So, rather than drop another $45 x 2 into this POS appliance i found some LEDs (Cree) on 'star boards' and just replaced the LEDs for about $2.00 each. Had to do some soldering and some 'manipulating', but that was easy enough and only took 1/2 hour...Anyway, at least i have lights in the fridge now. If anyone needs a driver PCB, i have an extra one for sale.....I'd even let it go half price.

Today the light came for the freezer as you said 9 out of 10 times! Thanks for the part number! The Light I used a putty knif and it came out nicly and not installation issue but the plug in is tight so made sure I had the plug hels with a pair of nedle nose plyers so it would not move and sliped in new led and lights wen on! I also remove the two sliding trays i like to wide open space I car install them if I want to but they a hade to get out! A BIG THANK YOU FOR THE HOW TO! MAYBE TOOK ME 30 MINUTES FROM TIME I GOT THREE TOOLS AND EVERYTHING PUT AWAY!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Thank you for this video. Saved me money. Repair person to come 150.00 ordered light 150.00 I wish you would of posted how to get the clips out of freezer drawer rails a little better. I did a test and unplugged a side light and plugged into freezer light and that was my problem. Freezer light went out. So now my freezer light and top lights work, side lights do not. Might replacement light should be here in about a week. Thanks

It seems Part #W11462342 is for the FRIDGE and #W10695459 is for the FREEZER. They appear mostly the same, but 5459 comes with splice connectors. What do I need splice connectors for, and are the two fixtures interchangeable? BTW, thanks for the best repair video out there for this problem!

Same exact issue, new bulb assembly was around $20. A little wary of popping those drawer stoppers, but came out unbroken. Took about 5 mins or less to pull old one out, reinstall new one and finished. Didn’t have the insulation problems you had thankfully.

I think that the instructions are self-explanatory. It was easy to remove the lock in the lefthand corner and remove the tray. I replace the led-light. I ordered 3 lights so I have two left over just in case another light goes out.

This was tons of help, thank you very much!!!!! It was my freezer light that was bad. I took one of my side lights and put it where the freezer light was and it came on as well as my top lights!!! Just a FYI to everyone. My top lights would flicker sometimes even with the freezer light out. But now everything is working perfectly. I almost purchased the led control board thinking that was the issue. Thank you for this video!!!!

Glad this was helpful! When I firs saw this problem I thought the same thing. Ordered the Light control and same problem. Found out later that is was wired in series and the freezer light was more often than not the culprit lol.

Bearded Appliance Repair well just got back to it, Pulled a couple of small flat head screw drivers out, pried under each side of the light and once my fingers could get it just pulled the thing out. I have small hands so I just took food out of the center part of the top drawer to get to it. I also just left the fridge on (yeah I know the 14 volts could shock me). While trying to get the connector out from the insulation the light came back on. Checked the lights up top and they were back on! Popped it back in making sure the wire were still in tension a bit. Works great! I kid you not, no more than 5 minutes thanks to your tips. My wife will think I worked all morning on it! Thanks again

Thanks for the video. I have the refrigerator that you are showing. I had only the 2 top lights on the left hand side that were working. None on the left, none on the sides or freezer were working. I took the chance and purchased the $50 freezer LED light, Replaced it and all the lights came back on. The only bad part was getting the new one to fit completely flush. Thanks again for your video.
