I’m in the middle of doing this right now … place a camera near the vent where they are going in and out and you’ll start to see their patterns (rats) - then place rats traps near the opening outside and wait until you trapped them all - then after a few days of no activity you can close the vent - that’s my plan anyway :)

I was going to say that I have a feral cat scratching under my floor. I can’t tell if it’s inside or out roaming so when I do the repair work, I’m unsure as to whether or not I’ve trapped it inside or outside. How do I deal with this animal?

Set traps after you seal up the openings that they entered!

If the wires are no longer in service just cut them. If they are still in service you can notch a small opening in the screen if they are to hard to re-route thru the wall.

Nothing ever fits our house vent holes that easy, we wish!! Had to screw and nail in!

My house has the vent that you said is for roof soffits. Wouldn’t that keep rain out better? How do you know it’s insufficient venting..?

No, it was not design for what you were asking, 35 years handyman (old school / do things right, or do not do it) the title on this give you a hint, my experience show me this gentleman got knowledge, and sharing it!!!..the screen vent will never get rain inside , why? it is protected by the roof!

You need a contractor who understands roof/attic venting to determine if your home has sufficient ventilation.

Crawlspace vent screens are almost always damaged by contractors or homeowners when performing electrical or plumbing upgrades. Try not to damage your vent screens to keep rodents from entering your crawlspace and possibly into your living area.
