How to replace a 2013 Toyota Prius 12v battery

This is simple enough for ANYONE to complete. Start to finish look at replacing the 12v battery in a 2013 Toyota Prius. The steps should be the same for all 2010 - 2015 gen 3. The battery is ~$175 from Toyota or parts stores. Total time to replace is about a half-hour.

Oh my gosh, watched this video, and a couple others for comparison, and believe me...DO IT YOURSELF!!! Had to get it done today as this weekend in Denver doesn't get above 5degrees. It is SO easy. I decided to time it. 14 minutes from the time I stepped in the garage, got my 10mm socket wrench, moved our stuff and everything to get to the battery, switched it out and put everything back in it's place. I removed/replaced in this order, when I got to the battery. Removed hold-down strap, Neg cable, Pos cable, Vent tube, battery. Replaced battery, vent tube, Pos, Neg, Hold-down strap. EVERYthing completed in 14 minutes! Thanks Andy!!!!

Would suggest taking off the negative terminal first, before removing the bracket. Reason: Then you have much less of a chance to accidentally ground out the electrical system while working on the battery… which MAY or may not have Amp/volts left in it. Whereas if one were to take off the ground side terminal first and were to inadvertently touch anything metal during the process (anything but a hot wire or terminal) = no problem. However, while taking off the hot side first … if you touch anything grounded (which can be a great deal of the surrounding area) = Sparks, fire, & possibly an exploding battery = all bad. Thus: Always remove the negative terminal first and replace the ground terminal, last.

At 2:40, be sure to use a short wrench. If it's long enough to contact the positive terminal, it won't be pretty.

I really should have looked at the description first to see the half-hour. I went out thinking it would be slightly harder than replacing on a regular car. Nope, 30 of the 31.5 minutes it took me was to remove and replace the bolts.

Why didn’t you clean the terminals pre connection. That like bit of dull grey coating creates resistance and reduces amperage flow. Removing the slight surface oxidation first, with a battery brush or some sandpaper allows the best connection possible. Cleaning the battery posts and cable connections periodically is a good way to get the best life out of the battery as well.

And a great guide. I watched it although I really want to needed to except for what kind to get. I'm an old farmer I changed all kinds of batteries. But I'm a guy always reads instructions make sure I don't screw up. One question. Does changing that battery mess up all the electronic data upfront in the dashboard or computer system? I'm thinking not it probably saves it somehow hopefully?

No issues up front. You'll lose the saved radio settings, but that's it. As for which one, that is up to you. Any parts store or Walmart has the right one in stock, but people have their brand preferences and I'm not about to step on that landmine. 😆

What if the little tube in on our Prius doesn’t have a little “tab”? But the battery we bought has a spot for one? Do we need to get a specific type of battery?

How do I know when to replace it? Was there a warning light on your dash that indicated it needed to be done?

The first sign might be reduced gas mileage. If you were consistently getting 50 MPG, and now max out at 43, that's a sign. Another is when it doesn't start on the first Start press. Eventually, the service engine light comes on, or the car won't start.

Is it possible to purchase the genuine battery of 3rd gen prius, the one u hav replaced with the new one. I mean the same one installed when the car was brand new, is it also available in the market or dealerships?

Yup. Just call any dealership parts department and they’ll gladly sell you their OEM battery, for about $30 more. Due to branding issues, I don’t think it’s available at parts stores. Plot twist: they’re all the same battery, as there are only a few battery makers out there. Die Hard is the same thing as the others, all made by Johnson Controls. But if you insist on factory, dealership will sell it and warranty it.

Is there an issue with cutting the power to the onboard computer? Aside from resetting your clock, and losing all your recent gas mileage info, Does anything else get rebooted?

Nah, it was fine. Startup and operation were 100% normal.

Gens? Or types? There was Prius (hatchback), Prius C (compact), and Prius V (wagon).
