I was replacing my mom's drain and the drain remover tool actually broke the cross hairs on the drain and the drain was still in the same place that it was when I started minus the cross hairs. So here's an additional little 'tip' that you can use in desperate times. Grab a socket that is just smaller than the size of the drain hole and then you'll need some JB Weld. I think that you know where I am going with this. Socket 'welds' to the inside of the drain and use the socket wrench to extract the drain. The socket is history when you're done but you also dodged a bullet because you were able to pull that toothless drain out...

I would probably try this tool first... then go back to Home Depot for some JB Weld after it makes the problem worse! www.homedepot.com/p/311493720

What I did was find a socket that I could toss afterward and put some JB Weld around the outside of the socket and inside of the drain and let it set. After it cured, I took a wrench into the socket and began to remove. It came out surprisingly easy at that point. I did try the tool that you suggested and it went nowhere. It cost me a couple of bucks for the JB Weld and about $6 for the disposable socket...

I've removed about 4 tub drains during remodels. All had been in place since at least the Kennedy administration (Roosevelt for the one in my current home) and none surrendered to a pair of needle nose pliers.

my drain plug lever and face plate fell INTO my tub yesterday. this video just saved me a grand. just dont tell anyone that i'll be gluing abs to pvc.... i really dont have a choice, the tub is on the second floor and i'm not ripping out the kitchen i just remodeled to get under the tub. i'm going to have to do it ALL from behind the tub in the little access hole

What about when you don’t have access to the drain? My bathroom is on the second floor and I’m assuming the plumbing is in the ceiling of the first floor. I have to replace that drain plug but am terrified I’m going to cause some major damage removing it.

Yes, typically you have to gain access to unit below in order to fully replace the drain system. You may have enough room if you open up the wall behind, but if the piping is very old it will be unlikely. Thanks for the great question! Good luck with this project.

@@plumberturd that's way too low my friend. One thing I've realized is when the price is high, customers tend to value and appreciate you more. Also they refer you to their friends and family who are willing to pay a premium price for good service. When I use to price low, I was working my ass off not making the money I deserved to make and was getting referrals to other crappy customers who had expectations of low prices. Now that I started charge like the big companies I now work much less (most days in home by 5pm) and make MUCH more money.
