In this Bathtub Drain Stopper Video, I walk you thru the steps to take in setting up and or adjusting a typical trip waste assembly. This common bathtub drain stopper mechanism will accommodate bathtubs 14" & 16" in height.
Most of what you see in this video is actually inside of your walls and flooring. The only visible items you would actually see are the trip lever plate and the factory-installed chrome strainer. Any questions, you can reach me at info@bobsplumbingvideos.com.
Regards & Happy Plumbing,

While Americs is a Youth based culture meaning marketers target the 18-35 yr old demographic for their disposable income, the knowledge required to keep the American machine running resides in the depths of the experienced and seasoned veterans. This is BY AN UNIVERSAL EXPANSE, the best tutorial on the drain lever system that I have viewed. How can you tell if it is effective? When you can remember everything that was stated when you are practically applying the knowledge. Now I will teach my son and that's how the American machine is kept running. WELL DONE.👏👏👏👍

Thanks for the video Bob. I wish this was available onto KZbin 10 years ago when I replaced the overflow on my tub. No locking faceplate on the overflow and here I am 10 years later doing this again because the tube coming out of the shoe came loose while snaking the line. Thankfully we have a 24 hour supply house in Brooklyn. 10 years older, and the 12 inches I had to work in 10 years ago seems to have shrunk

Best video by far we've seen. Very much appreciate you take the time to show every single thing. We just put in a brand new entire bathroom. Hooked everything up and everything worked but the tub wouldn't hold water and zero instructions. So we've been watching some videos and yours is by far the best. We give you a hundred stars. Thank you and ours does not have the backing plate. And I think that we will find one that does just in case. Thanks again. 👍👍👍👍👍

My tub hasn't been draining right for a while now. Cleaned the hair out, drain cover removed and replace properly. Still wouldn't drain very well. I was cleaning the tub after soaking some oven racks and leaned on the trip lever. WHOA, I could hear the water rushing down. I've known the problem but not the fix. UNTIL NOW! Thanks so much for the great information. Just knowing the industry name for it is a big help. The guy at the store won't look at me like I have three heads when I ask where they are now.

I currently live in a duplex and rent one side out. Our side has had various issues, and I just discovered today what these systems are called. One side has a trip lever with no plunger or spring-to-stopper system, while our side, has the lever with the spring, but there is no hardware connected where the spring ought to go, from the To to the non-existent plunger. I have a 2 year old, by the way, and your reference to the little toy soldier brought laughable tears to my eyes. Excited to see more of your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Bob. Love the detail. Our 18 year old tub would slowly drain. I figured it out by taking it apart and extending the rod. Both Nuts were away from the Plastic Swivel. Your video was the first one I saw because I wanted to know how it sealed if its metal to metal. Mine doesn't have the Orings (At least I didn't notice them) Im gonna take it apart again and clean and silicon grease it thanks to your suggestion.

Thank you so much for this. It was really well done and so very informative. I had just patted myself on the back for snaking the tub out but did not at all consider the risk of doing so without having the drain secured at the overflow. Good to know. In the video you only have the plunger adjusted to come down so that the o-ring was still somewhat visible. I understand why you did that because you wanted it to be able to come up all the way when open, but if you do that won't water just leak below the lower o-ring? I'm guessing that in reality when you adjust it in the wall that the proper placement would have the upper o-ring sealing just above the drain (so water doesn't rise up the overflow till level w/the tub) and the lower completely below the drain pipe exit (so water can't escape downward). That said, when I looked at the hardware store they sold a brass plunger assembly without O-rings. Wouldn't such a plunger be guaranteed of leaking unless it was machine to fit the overflow pipe perfectly(which seems unlikely)?
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 6 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! Actually, most of those plungers don't have "O" rings on them. They, in theory, are machined to very tight tolerances and once seated into the tee are supposed to create a watertight seal. That manufacturer was Wolverine Brass where I purchase most of my daily maintenance plumbing products from, but they only sell to the trade. Regards, Bob.

I've had this problem myself, try a wire hanger, create a small hook on one end and try to snag it and pull it up. I've sometimes had to saturate it with WD-40 down the overflow, let it sit for a day or two, the try and retrieve it. And then there are the ones that just won't budge, time for surgery from behind. Open the wall remove the overflow and yank it out . When done I install an access panel and if it's on an outside wall, you got a bigger problem!

Awesome video, my problem is the lever stopper is broken off in the T pipe. It looks like I’m going to have to take off the T pipe...replace it and and replace the drain lever that fits inside. But that’s ok, bec I can see how it all functions now. This is showing me all the piping system. Now I just need to replace the pipe and drain lever. I believe I’ll have to take some tiles off the wall to expose the pipes to replace those things. Thank you, and I’m subscribing.

Great "studio setup"! Nice to actually have that visual of the system, so we can SEE what we're up against. My son's tub was clogged, and, of course, his drain stopper is frozen stuck! Put some CLR down there, but, when I gavit a yank, this mornin, the coupler came uncoupled, and only the upper half came out. Been fightin withit with'a coathanger for awhile, but even when it seems to catch on something, it bends the hanger, as soon as any real force is applied, and I suspect it's still frozen solid. Any pro tips for this scenario. Unfortunately, my mechanism is def NOT the top quality brass unit u have in your studio. Faceplate screws, and upper linkage were VERY rusty, and I suspect it's prolly pretty nasty down below, as well...

Anything work with your situation? @@Razberuru Ha! I've been ignorinit, hopin an asteroid would hit the earth, n solve all my probs... 🤣 I'm thinkin, when I finally resolve to git'r done, I'm gonna purchase a snake inspection cam for my phone, so I can hopefully SEE what's down there, n fabricate some rig that's strong enuff to withstand tha yankin it's gonna take to pull that lower half out. I'll prolly spray some penetrant down there too. CLR ain't nearly so corrosive (Nor as effective!) as muratic acid, so I wun't expectit to damage anything. LMK if u have any luck... 😉

Hi Bob, really nice video. I have a few questions about a brass drain that I hope you can help me with. I bought a brand new brass drain for my new replacement tub. Due to the nature of the installation, I installed the drain on the tub while it is out of the alcove. I wanted to test the drain shoe gasket for leaks before installing the tube in a base of mortar. The access to the drain from below is a PITA. So with the drain stopper down, I poured a bucket of water inside the tub. No leaking around the drain shoe, and it held the water except I noticed a very small drips of water coming out of the bottom inside of the drain where it would connect to the tail piece and into the trap. So water was getting by the brass plunger. I removed the trip lever and let the drain plunger and linkage "free fall" to see if my linkage was not adjusted properly, yet the small dripping still happened. So my questions are, is this normal for a brass plunger type of drain (brass on brass)? And once the tub is in place and the trap is connected, water is in the trap, so will this slight dripping just fill the tailpiece from the trap back to the drain plunger and then stop since there is practically zero pressure to push water through the trap? I'm not sure what is takes to move water through a trap. Not sure how many people even know this since all the drain testing I have seen is after the tub is in and drain is connected to the trap. Thanks for any advice on this!

In my experience brass on brass very rarely is going to hold 100%. You may have a very miniscule drip through the seal which bath takers should not even notice. I don't believe it's enough volume to create movement through the trap I.M.H.O.

Hey Bob. Great video and explanation of the assembly. This might be a dumb question, but how does the overflow work if there’s a stopper blocking the overflow pipe? Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of having an overflow? Am I missing something here?
@BobsPlumbingVideos

The stopper is a hollow piece of brass that blocks the tub from draining, but still allows water from the top to pass thru.

I've comes across the issue several times, and unless you have access from behind to break it down and remove the plunger, may be best to leave it alone (as long as the water is draining).

Great video and I have a question... Is it ok if the existing overflow pipe is sliding up/down with little force? Trying to fix a leak and I'm pretty sure the overflow gasket is the reason but curious about the pipe fitting at the bottom. Thank you!

If it’s moving up and down as you mention it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s leaking, but I would minimize movement and replace the upper gasket. Thanks for commenting! Bob.

Hey Bob. Great video. My problem is more extreme. While replacing trim (brass to brushed nickel) I found that the linkage from the overflow switch to the stopper arm must have disconnected at one time or another and slid down the T. Where would you recommend I start dismantling the overflow tube from outside the tub? Really need a good answer soon. Thanks very much.

If you have access to the back of the tub, that’s the best way. Same thing happened to me on a job and the only way I was able to do it was from behind.

@@BobsPlumbingVideos Hi Bob. Yes, I should have been a little more specific. I have already gained access to the tub through the wall. It appears to be all brass with a brass coupling near the bottom of the T overflow. It's a rather tall tub, acrylic, Kohler with Kohler drain system. Circa 1998. If I were to start removing parts, where should/can I start? The large nut (coupling) near the bottom? Will I have space to slide the two pieces apart to get at the lift rod? If the extraction is successful, I plan to replace the lift rod with a new one. It's very kind of you to help. Thanks.

Excellent video! I am havng an issue with this right now & have seen buildup in the pipe when removing the triplever stoppage tool & it still does not stop up the tub, so now I a on the search for one with O rings attached or do I buy the O rings & attach them? also, the equipment seems pretty standard & metal has already bent should I try a regular hardware store?

No, the hardware store won't have it. The one in the video came from a company called Plumbmaster, but they'll only sell to contractors! Do a google search, I'm sure they're out there!

Curious if you could measure the linkage length relative to the overall height of your assembly. If for instance your center y to center was say, 12” then your 1st set up would set the linkage at say, 9 “ that way at keast it’s not a guess

You can try spraying some WD-40 down the overflow, let it soak for 24 hrs and try. If no luck and you have access from behind you may end up having to dismantle the overfloewtube to get it free.

Hey Bob I have this setup in my 60s bungalow-I never noticed it before so it could have been doing it all along but mine is brass to brass as you mentioned and appears to be leaking a bit when I'm having a bath. Should I ever expect it to hold water perfectly if it's brass to brass or is some drainage/leakage normal?
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Bottom line is that if it's an older unit of lets say 25 plus years and beyond and you've adjusted it to the max, it's going to seep a bit. Easy fix , just get a large rubber stopper to place over the strainer and problem solved.

Thanks for the video Mr. Bob, very informative. I am not able to open the drain to let the water out and have to replace the level. I also need to clean out the drain. What are your thoughts on Liquid Plumber or any of the other liquid draining products? The drain isn't completely stopped up but I can tell I need to flush it out. Should I use the Liquid Plumber? Thanks for your response.

I’m generally not a fan of commercial drain cleaners. Some are just down right dangerous and some are a waste of money. You would be better off with a natural bacteria / enzyme product. Added monthly it will keep drains open (unless you have a hair serious issue) in which case a snake is the only fix. wiki.ezvid.com/best-enzyme-drain-cleaners. Regards, Bob.
