As of 2024 this video is 4 years old and you just showed me how to install a c clip on this particular starter that I was working on right now and after watching your video I paused and tried it myself. Came back to give a thumbs up because I was struggling and you helped me out when I best needed it.

Great tip on using a baggie to catch the clip - those do tend to pop off and shoot across the room. After cleaning up the shaft, clean out the groove for the retainer ring and the top of that cap - it has to move up over the ring to hold it in place.. Mine was really rusty and the clip wouldn't hold until I cleaned out the groove and the cap. Also, you can press the clip back on with a socket instead of needle-nose pliers. Use one that the shaft can fit in to, put it over the clip (and don't forget the baggie) and smack with hammer. And FYI - I spent $8 on two sprockets instead of $45 on a new starter. The last sprocket lasted 15 years ... so with two replacements I'm good for another 30 years. THANKS FOR POSTING!!

I cannot Thank you enough for this video. You were so informative step by step that I have every confidence now that I can do that in the morning. However I am going to put the gear replacement on without taking the starter off. I totally appreciate the baggie tip also. Thank you again!!

Solved my questions about how to change it. I changed it on a replacement starter that was only a year old. For some reason this one had the curved washer in the other direction from yours. I decided to put it back the same way it came off. It's working great. Maybe it doesn't matter but I would put it back whichever way it came off. Before I reassembled, I squeezed the C clip a little so it fit in the hole. I see why you say 6 point socket... It has a better curved area to grab the clip but was still able to get it on far enough. I suspect some sockets may not work due to their design at the end? BTW, I used a 3/8". I wish there was one a little smaller but the next size down was too small. It took quite a few tries. Several times I created burrs on the top of the shaft which I had to file off to get the cap off and on. I think I was afraid to hammer hard enough the first few times. Although I used a socket, I can see a possible advantage to needle nose since it's easier to see. However, it's also easier to have it pop into Neverland. I tried the bag idea but was unable to see well enough. After it finally popped on I did not like how the clip seemed to show more which had me concerned. I fixed that by pulling up hard on the cap until the clip compressed a little more and slipped into the hole. I did not sand or lube the shaft since it was not rusty. I DID put a thin layer of silicone grease in the tracks of the white spiral part. Not sure if that will attract dirt but hoping it will assure things pop back cleanly and reduce wear?? The bracket on mine is quite different. It appears to be a casting of some kind and probably more brittle than the one shown. I clamped it to adjustable platform of a drill press at just the right height to also rest the bottom (beside the shaft end, not on it) on a block of wood to take the strain of hammering. I saw someone say they were going to do it in place on the mower, but I would not recommend that since you have to hammer fairly hard. I would worry about possibly damaging the engine casting or the bracket. IMHO. Thanks so much for your video!

Sounds like the propane heater is working overtime! Thanks for the video. I always wondered how you get the retainer clip off without impaling a finger or two!

Thanks for this Vid, using the plyers worked great for me. I greased up the top so the clip sat still, a few hits with the hammer and it seated.

My c clip will not stay on . Seems like the starter shaft barely has a ridge anymore to hold the c clip in place. I get it in place, try the starter and it flies off the top when the starter engages . Any tricks to keep it on?

You might try spinning up the starter motor with 12 volts and use a rounded parting tool (the radius of your clip) to clean out the rust from the groove and possibly deepen it by a couple of thousands of an inch. Just an idea for you. Hope it helps.

Usually, the model number of the engine is used to identify the correct starter for it. Looked mine up on a lawnmower parts online dealer's engine parts diagram.
