Thanks again for the video. Found the issue that I described earlier. The chain on the intake side was actually not stuck. The slack was on the the exhaust side. I took the exhaust cam (with phaser) back off, pulled the slack from the exhaust side, re-aligned my marks, and viola!

Good evening sir, I’m coming to you today to thank you for your clear and simple explanation for how to do this repair myself, I have been a car enthusiast for all my life. And also couldn’t afford to pay to have my car repaired in a professional repair shop. And definitely didn’t have a car with a warranty. Tonight I started my 2013 s after replacing all rockers and a lifter or 2. No issues car runs like new but I loved learning the inch pounds to foot conversion the most 😉 once again thank you sir God bless

Bro, you are my hero!! This side of the engine has fought me every step of the way. That plastic tool that holds the chain slack holder wouldn't stay in place and it kept popping out. Then I found your priceless to me video I did it how you said to do it and made me a little grenade pull and after messing with it for about an hour I got everything to stay loosened up. Then when I was putting it all back together the chain kept slipping on the cam phaser gear. I took the exhaust cam back out three times before everything stayed in place after me keeping my hand on the gear so the chain wouldn't slip.I was ready to cry last night because I thought I was going to have to take the timing cover off until I found your videos. Thank you for taking your time to make them for people like me.

Had to do the other side today (right side) so I’m glad I have these videos saved from six months ago. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you doing them… For some reason I couldn’t get the special tool in the right way to release the tension on the chain on this side (I think the guide kept moving on that pin it sits on and I didn’t have anything to stick in there to hold it) so I just did it without it, it wasn’t that bad I just had to be patient and rotate the cams a little bit to my advantage to slide the phasers back on Thank you so much again

Just wanted to thank you. Just finished swapping out all 4 of my cam phasers. I had a few issues. Extremely noisy on start up, sometimes sounded like lifter noise sometimes it sounded loud enough to be a rod knock! I also had intermittent P0349 causing me to have no power. After paying my dealer $700 to swap out the Cam positioning sensor and a valve cover gasket oh and telling them I thought it was a bad cam phaser . It was no better. I ordered the parts re watched your videos on the subject and proceeded to change the phasers and the leaky oil cooler. I have my fingers crossed I fixed the issue. I just know it starts nice and quiet now. Sorry for the long rant but I really wanted to say thank you. I wouldn’t have attempted this repair without the help of your videos. Keep up the good work

Another great video. Has all the info to get the job done. I replaced all rocker arms and lifters on my bank 2 (left). After starting the engine again still heard ticking/knocking noise. Removed the valve cover again and by turning the engine by hand I noticed that my chain guide keeps popping on the tensioner retracting black paw every so often. I used the side hole to lift on the paw and extract it all the way out as close to the chain guide. Turn the engine by hand few times again and the noise is not there any more. Is it required to extract the paw from tensioner after you pull on the grenade pin or do you think I have another issue?

Thank you so much for posting this (and all your Pentastar engine videos) ! My son and I were able to repair his 2015 Jeep Wranger "ticking" problem that had gone on for months. We did have to replace the bank 1 intake cam (badly worn lobe) because of a badly failed rocker arm. This video made it possible for me to understand how to release the timing chain tension with nothing more than a long thin screwdriver doing what the tension tool does. We also wedged a large flat blade srewdriver between the phaser sprockets, accomplishing the same thing the phaser lock tool does. Of course we marked the timing chain and held the cams with a wrench while loosening and tightening the phaser bolts. Actually a very easy and do-able job, thanks to you! Words of advise to everyone else....remove the transmission dipstick and move the dipstick tube out of the way by removing the upper hold down bolt and loosing the lower one, then lift the end of the tube out of the transmission. That will give you plenty of room to access the upper PCV bolt. Also, Loosen oil dipstick tube. Finally remove the fender flare and wheelwell liner as a single unit to gain easy access to the back the valve cover and lower PCV bolt, along with better access to the side of the valve cover. This simple step will make the job SO MUCH EASIER on a Jeep.

No, you do not have to replace any unless it was damaged. No need to waste money on camshafts if you do not need them. Take a look at the lobes and see the extent of damage. The ones that was damaged should be replaced

Great video, I just see one potential problem when you were pouring oil on top the head. Seems like some oil may have gotten down in the bolt holes. Could affect torque on bolts and potentially crack the bolt hole when tightening, trying to compress the oil with no where for it to go.

Great guide. When you take off the cam caps just to replace a back rocker does it matter what position the cam is in ? Thanks

Thanks for watching and subscribing..You typically want it in a position where the lobe is not pushing on the valve. So you may wanna just rotate it a little to get to that point

Hey man! You’re videos are awesome! I’m in the middle of a complete rocker/lifter, and bank 2 exhaust cam replacement. I’m stuck on getting the grenade pen seated the hole. I can get it in the hole, but i guess it’s not slipping into the whatever it’s supposed to go into. It doesn’t hold the tensioner back and just slides out. I am using my upholstery removal tool to move the tensioner, but I can never get my grenade pin to get “pinched”. Thanks!

Hello my friend, thanks for watching. Can i first get you to like the video and subscribe to the channel? thanks..Now, im having a hard time making out this question. you have to make sure your pin thin enuff to even be inserted into the tensioner hole. Next, if you have the plunger all the way in, your pin should fall right in..Im not understanding the question

The side pin is what I didn’t know about. I dont understand how it lets the guide fall back further than what I can push it, but imma try it in the morning. I think I owe JT that $20 donation.

Great Video! and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. Decided to replace all rockers and lifters on my 2013 Town & Country after experiencing the dreaded loud tick. Purchased the plastic version of the tools on amazon. All went smoothly until I ran into a problem when trying to get the timing chain back over the intake cam phaser. Even with the tensioner released, I can't get the chain to come back up and around the cam phaser sprocket. It seems to be stuck or kinked down below the tensioner. Have you ever run into this problem? And if so, how did you fix it? Any help would be much appreciated. I need to finish this job this weekend!

I’m in the same place on my 2012 T&C. After a misfire code sent me to throw a start playground and coil at it, cleared the code but it came back. I went to swap injectors and figured I’d check out the cams, lifters, and rocker arms. They all look fine. Now I see in the video I can try to pull up on the side hole while pushing in on the back side of the tensioner pad before try to insert the grenade pin. Just can’t get enough slack in the chain to get the second phaser on, even if I push on the chain guide. I need that “extreme slack”. Gonna make a pin from a coat hanger.

Hi, two question, after change the rocker arm, the camshaft sensor must be relearn?, and, this must be do with the scanner or there is another way to do it?. It is a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 with the same engine, V6 3.6 lts. Thank You for the information.

When inserted the plastic tool to push chain tensioner the plastic side of guide rail broke off the tensioner. I used correct part you mentioned. Do i need to replace with a new chain tensioner and tear the whole front of motor apart? Or will it still provide tension on chain with one side of the plastic broke?

Thanks for the awesome video! This is a huge help as I have 2 bad rocker arms. Question; is there a particular way to lay the cam back into the head? For example, do the holes on the cam need to be pointing straight up? As I moved them to zero position to remove them.

My son's 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sport had 'the tick'. Coming from driver's side. I have 90s Miatas and do timing belts, etc. on them, but never did more than oil/filter changes on the Jeep. Watched your videos and thought I can handle that and dug in. Sure enough cylinder 4 (if I'm counting them right - middle cylinder on driver's) had both exhaust rockers bad. One was seized up and had eaten away at the cam lobe pretty bad. Replaced the cam and all the rockers/lifters. When I put it back together, I could hear a tick on the passenger side that wasn't noticeable before because the other was so bad. Dug into that and the middle cylinder there (#3?) had one bad rocker on the intake cam, but it hadn't had a chance to do more damage. Got that all straightened out and she's purring like a kitten again. Spent most of Dad's Day on the second go 'round but I'll sleep good tonight. Bought the cheapest oil I could and will put that in in the AM, drive it most of the day, and change it again w/some good stuff. I had that in mind already, but saw your other video about the cam lobe metal loose in the engine. Can't thank you enough... And, yes, I have subscribed :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGiUaJafgb6pi68

This is a great video, all your videos that I’ve watched have helped me so far. It looks like I only have 1 bad rocker and it wore my cam shaft. I’m changing my cam shaft and the 1 rocker, should I swap the lifter associated with the rocker? And will it damage the engine being i am only doing the 1 side? Thanks in advanced for your advice. Vehicle:2014 Dodge Challenger 3.6 vvt 150xxx miles ps what type of engine oil would you recommend for my vehicle?

Yes, I would put a new lifter with that new rocker arm. I tend to use what the car manufacturers suggest located on the oil cap unless I have over 180k, then I tend to change depending on the climate. Thanks for watching the vids and I hope you give them thumbs up and subscribed to the channel.

Awesome videos (1 & 2) on the Pentastar 3.6 cam, rocker, phaser removal & replacement. I wish I had seen them earlier. Have a 2015 jeep wrangler, changed out a bad rocker arm on the passenger side. used someone else's video where you just loosen the cam caps enough to raise the cam slightly and remove the bad rocker arm. For this I did not set the engine to TDC, but did have to rotate the crank / cam assembly some to get the cam lobe off the bad rocker. Put it all back together, it starts & idles fine, but throws codes P0369, P000A, P0017. Had none of this prior, and suspect I may have gotten the timing off with regards to the exhaust cam / phaser. I did replace the cam position sensor on that side, but issue remains. Thought to get your thoughts before disassembling this again, so I know what to look for during the process.

How did you resolve the codes? I have a Jeep. Replaced rockers and lifters, now getting two codes for positioning sensors on bank 1 and 2.
@stevevance1678
@stevevance1678 3 жыл бұрын
@@jesmann66 In my situation I had to pull all the front engine covers off, line the engine up on TDC, and could see the timing chain had jumped a tooth, but just on the bank 1 (passenger's) side. Pulled it all apart, lined up everything afterwards was good. My mistake was rotating the engine counterclockwise, even though it was just a small amount. This seems to create enough slack in the chain to cause it to jump a tooth on initial startup. So for others reading this, only rotate the engine clockwise, even if all you need is a nudge backwards to get a single rocker arm out.

@@stevevance1678 Oh man after reading this I think I may have just screwed the pooch on my wife's 2015 Wrangler. I had to rotate the cam clock wise and counter clock wise to get the rocker's out. Found out I had a badly worn lobe on the intake cam. Bank 1 . I am trying to figure out which cam to purchase. Do they consider this the Left side if looking at the Jeep from the front or is it the right?

Great video and a great help in working on my daughters 2015 Jeep Cherokee with the 3.2l with a few knockin' rockers. I will say i got my butt kicked some today as apparently the Cherokee's have some AC lines in the front and the intake brackets that are next to impossible to unbolt unless the front end is pulled off. Crazy. Had some trouble with the front bank today and had just unbolted the oil control bolts so phasers would move out some then had an issue where i had to remove them and lost the tension release. Fought that for awhile and quit for the night. Looked thru your video and i believe i can get it figured out now. I was worried about the timing chain being loose and getting enough slack to put them back, which kicked my complete butt. My main question is...where can I get that "grenade" that you use...or how is one made? That's the ticket right there! Thanks again...great video and help.

Got it all done and back together and after being as careful as a person could over 2 days of working on it, it doesn't start. Jeez. Time to check all connections. I do smell gas it seems when it's cranking, though. I know for sure that cams are in right locations (marked them), timing was at TDC, had the correct parts, lubed cam hold downs with assembly lube, etc. Man, it's got to be something simple but almost seems like compression thing. And, of course, I don't have a code reader here and no other vehicle to go get one as we had to do some vehicle flip flopping. Always something, I swear

Hey JT, I failed to mark the timing chain links before I took the sprockets off when doing this procedure on the driver side. I did mark the two dots to the first two cam caps at TDC, I can match the cam sprockets to those marks but not to the chain, is there another way to know how the chain should fit?
