Doorknob installation is a prime time for getting out that funny right-angled screwdriver that looks like a hex key. Most have a phillips on one end and flathead on the other and are shaped like a Z. If you don't have that, take a driver bit and slot it into a little box-end wrench or vice grip plier.

You could set the depth for the router bit by either putting the router over the old recess and dropping the bit. (That assumes the old one was done correctly of course) Or set the base of the router on the edge of the hinge and let the bit drop down on whatever surface you've got the hinge on. Lock into place.

I had a door damaged in a similar way. I cut out the lower section of the skin and replaced it. That actually went pretty smoothly, using a track saw. Nice job on installing the door. Here's how I have done it; I place the new door flat on the saw horse with the bevel in the right direction then place the old door on top with the bevel as same as the new door; flush the top and hinge side of the door. Then clamp the doors together and mark for the hinge and drill for the lockset. Now cut out for the hinge. When using a router to set the depth of the hinge; place the router on the edge of the with the bit raised so that the router sits flat on the door; now place the hinge between the router base and door and lower the bit till it touches the door make test cut adjust if need to.

I've been told that if you put the hinge side with three "rounds" on the door (the hinge with two "rounds" on the wall), it makes the door easier to control when taking on/off. The side with the two is captured and you can't hold anything - the side with the three (the door) has the exposed one on the bottom and can be used to place the door with.

7:50 I have that same porter cable jig and I like it, maybe I like it a lot. A few things. Figure your depth before installing the jig. Also, those little nails are better than screws. Here at this time stamp you can see the mound of door material blown out by screwing in to the door. Sure it can all be fixed and the nails will leave little .25mm holes also but those holes can be filled with caulk whereas those crews holes will almost need to be filled with filler, sanded, etc. Also, once you get comfy with the jig and the router, you can do this without securing the jig by holding the jig tight with one hand and the router with the other. Assuming you are using a small router.

@chrisburns56913 жыл бұрын
no, not in this area. unless pre-hung door in frame already. length is typically all the same, sometimes doors will need to be cut for finish flooring height, or if home has forced air heating and larger gap is desired for return air movement.
@2strokepower8033 жыл бұрын
Chris Burns that's gotta suck. It's much easier here then. Same here with the height being standard except in some situations. This week I mounted 7 new doorframes and doors in a basement (ca 1950s/60s house) and the door openings where lower than usual so had to cut off about 4-5 centimeters (about 2inch) on every frame and then also on the bottom of the doors to make it work. Turned out really nice actually since the old doors where just your normal flat hollow core door with veneer on. And they where water damaged after the basement had been flooded.
@chrisburns56913 жыл бұрын
@@2strokepower803 yeah takes a bit longer but with the router and jig that is the easy part. Hard part is when the old frame isn't square plumb and level so have to plane the new door so reveals match with wonky frame. However much of the time we install pre hung doors in frames, hinges already installed etc. Only time I hang slabs like this is when a door is broken like this, or someone wants to upgrade their doors but wants to keep the frames and trim work around the frames, makes sense a lot of time. New work or big renos though it's almost always pre hung. What can be a bit more work is when someone wants to upgrade from cheap hollow doors such as in this video, to solid core doors. I always add a middle hinge (solid doors always come with 3 hinges when sold prehung in the frame) so have to cut that 3rd mortise on the existing frame as well as the door. But hey money in my pocket as many people won't want to fool around cutting in hinges etc. If doors were really easy then less work for carpenters.
@2strokepower8033 жыл бұрын
Chris Burns Yea money is Nice. And When you get the hang of doing this it's probably pretty easy. And we do the same thing here. Example when we renovate a bathroom we try to talk the customer to get a new door aswell because it's harder to replace later on since they install the waterproof membrane on the edges of the doorframe and if you rip that the bathroom will no longer be by the code. And many times the doorframes and doors from the 50-70s are in a rough shape and usually binds and what not since they are nailed in place and they have settled over time.
