at 5:45, that dust boot/seal SPICER 2-86-418 should be pressed onto the shaft. 2" .090 tube works well for installing it.

I'm surprised at this Tim vid. He's usually extremely thorough with showing and explaining even the small details. But this vid skips over a lot of details that a newbie/first time D.C. rebuilder should see and know. Hell, they didn't even include a part number. 👎 to this vid.

Just did this on my WJ front double cardan. I couldn't figure how to get the bearing race out of the centering yoke until I saw you guys using a prybar as a lever. I had to modify one of my pry bars so it could fit inside, but worked like a charm and saved me from buying another specialty tool. Thanks!

Tiltle should be " How not to rebuild a Spicer C.V. joint" How are you going to grease the first joint with the zerk facing the center of the yoke? Just drop the seal on? It'll be destroyed in minutes! No grease in the centering kit? OH lets clamp the tube in a vice! Snap rings not fully seated? How long did this crap last before it ate itself? You guys are good for repeat parts sales! wheeew! Keep on bleepin'!

Ball joint removal tool and a press works well too if you don't feel comfortable beating the u-joint with a hammer. The needle bearings are easy to break. Those tools are pricey...I picked up a 12 ton press and a ball joint removal set for around 150.00 a piece, but if you plan on changing ball joints then you have the tool. And a press is always handy to have around the shop.

If you had used the U joints with the grease points in the caps instead of the cross it would make it easier to grease the universals in the Hook (double cardan) joint. The grease nipple in the cross is ok for the front U joints as long as its on the driveshaft side and not the Diff side.

Dude this looks so easy - I was just at autozone and was trying to get ball joints for this very set up I have on a dodge Dakota 4x4 - this dude made it seem like it was impossible for me to do. Ive literally done way harder shit than this - I cant believe I let that guy make me believe I couldnt do this. I have all of this and I have a master balljoint press. He ended up talking me into getting new drive shaft for 500 bucks and I was going to wait till pay day, but on the off chance I looked up this video. This is literally just time consuming - Ive bench pressed transmissions into place before - Im no mechanic Im just a guy who got tired of everyone giving me the run around. I cant believe this shit I lost so much respect for this guy at autozone.

Replacing all the u joints on my 74 Bronco and had a question about this particularly. On the ball joint in your video i didn't see a piece that mine has. It's just a thin metal ring that I believe is suppose to sit on the working surface of where the ball joint and spring rest. However in my particular instance it doesn't stay retained in that spot it likes to pop up and set on the ball joint. So any info on what this part is specifically and where it actually belongs and how to properly retain it there would be great. Thanks for the info to come and great videos.

How does the centering ball get grease? I didn't see him grease it before putting it together.
@phatsakk43
@phatsakk43 5 жыл бұрын
It's hard to see and he didn't point it out, but there is a tiny hole on the U-joint flange side of the centering yoke. You can pre-grease the roller bearings before assembly which is usually enough. Access to the grease hole is impossible once the U-joint is installed, so I usually pump it up before I finish the job. To get the grease into the hole, you'll need to change out the zerk fitting connector on your grease gun and use a grease needle tip. www.amazon.com/Carbyne-Grease-Needle-Nozzle-Adapter/dp/B01MR25WZ5/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1542375392&sr=8-9&keywords=grease+gun+needle

ChrisFix and Eric the Car Guy both have how to videos on this, only not on jeeps. But, the principle is the same on most vehicles, and is pretty straightforward assuming your jeep was built in or after the 90s and uses R134a refrigerant. I used the info in their videos to replace the compressor on my G35. Be aware, you'll need a vacuum pump and manifold gauges (mine cost me about $200 on Amazon) to properly charge the system.

Strongly advise using a proper press to remove the U-joints. Reason why is that cheap cast iron pot metal will move causing slight binding at the new U-joint cap area. Did it on mine. Don't bang them out with a hammer. Proper tool for the job.

I did some research on these. I'm not sure about the center ball and spring idea. the dodge trucks, 4x4, tend to have issues with these however, I don't know if it's a Cardan issue or a Dodge. Front drive shafts are failing and then beating up anything around it. It's interesting that Cardan joint don't fail much but they do with a Dodge truck.

Notice at 5:16, yours kind of drags a little? Should be bearing smooth when you rotate it like that. And at 5:07, your vice was pushing on that junk cast iron metal pushing it over. This will cause excessive bearing wear. You'll be back in there doing this all over again in a year or less.

Double-double; I run a front driveshaft in the rear. Once I put the SYE in, the front driveshaft from a zj worked perfectly, though I haven't cycled it yet. It may be ghetto, but a spare junkyard driveshaft works in front (I think) and back. Do you see anyone with this stupid setup?

I'm running the double cardan driveline I rebuilt in this video on the rear of my white XJ. Doesn't seem ghetto to me. It is holding up well.

2:11. I AM NOT criticising, but you missed an education point. Just before this timestamp, you are effectively destroying the machined surfaces, and then jump straight to Precision parts. Yow. I can't stop watching your videos, but sometimes I just scratch my head.. You guys are doing really good stuff, keep it up. Just offer up the little tidbit about machined surfaces when you can as this video will allow someone without the right tools to do the work (inexpensive option)... but wow, the fit and finish and fine measurements are blown out the water when you do it. Now, you can also add details as to the impact if any, IDK.. but please touch upon the shortcut as a shortcut and tell them why the right tools are preferable when you have them..

Sorry , but you totally skipped the hardest part, putting that boot on, its not just placed like in the vid. @5:32 you cant press it in (flexy rubber boot), did you use a socket just bigger than rubber but smaller that metal ring and hammer ?? Chisel and tapping?

Best to cough up a little more dough and have a proper drive line shop do this. They can check for balance after.

really....thats how the pros do it huh they grab a hammer and start smashing the caps out hell I dont even know what I'm doing and I know better that a ball joint press works a lot easier and doesn't bind up the caps so bad you fight getting it unbound when your done.... least you coulda done is show how to smack the knuckles so the joint loosens up.....

Still cheaper to buy the rebuild kit and have a shop do it with a press than buying the whole thing new.
