The timing chains and cam phasers seem to be a big problem with these GM high feature 3.6 VVT motors. I replace my timing chains, tensioners, guides and sprockets last year. I did not however, replace the cam phasers. After about 10 months the car developed a rattle at startup. One of the tell tail signs that a cam phaser was not staying locked in position when the car was shut off. Then the car developed a miss and was throwing the codes for cylinder 1, 3, and ,5 misfire. I though at first that just replacing the cam phasers would solve this. So I purchased the EN-48313 timing chain retention tools to alow me to do the job without removing the timing cover. Once Igot into the motor i discovered that was not my only problem. The right bank chain had a bunch of slack in it. I found that the tensioner for that bank had collapsed back to the deactivated state. I am thinking that the phasers not staying locked at startup allowed enough slack in the chain and a shock load may have forced the tensioner back into its collapsed state befor the motor had a chance to build oil pressure sufficient enough to hold the tensioner out.
