43 year's as a HVAC tech. Retired as of January. I still like to see what the young guys are up to. You young man, are good tech and have MANY more adventures ahead of you. Stay safe, hydrated and vigilant out there. There are so many obstacles and dangers out there that are not HVAC repair related that can slow you down or stop you in your tracks. The wheel puller is a smart tool to utilize when you can. I've always said "work smarter, not harder" and that mindset will give decade's of success.

HVAC tech/installer here, brother you need to get a motor puller for your drill lol! instead of smacking it with your hammer and cutting all that metal you just tighten it down on the squirrel cage and drill and it pulls the motor right off with ease. It'll save ya a lot of time and hassle

But on Amazon search hvac motor puller and the first one that pops up is the one I use. Two tips when using it, make sure ya spray pb blaster on motor shaft before and before you drill make sure the point of the puller is center on the motor shaft

Several years ago I had to replace a blower wheel in a furnace that had been thumping on startup for a couple of months. They called me when it quit working entirely. 2 of the welded on mounting legs had broken and the blower wheel was shredded. I ended up drilling out the spot welds on the mounting legs and putting a belly band mounting bracket on it and a new blower wheel. The thermal switches on the housing were destroyed and had to be replaced as well. If I had been called when it first started thumping it would have only needed the mounting bracket for parts. At the time that would have been about $15 in parts. By waiting until it quit working they ended up with almost $100 in parts. It also took about double the time to repair the wiring and the bent up fan housing.

I have a question about the speed wires and have not received a clear answer yet. If you have determined that the best airflow and temp split occurs with the high speed in BOTH heat and cool, can you use a Y adapter on the black wire and plug it into the heat and cool spades on the board so it always runs on high speed for every mode?
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy 2 жыл бұрын
Yes all you need to do is make sure both heat and cool terminals to to the black wire, that way, it will be in high speed for heat and cool alike 👍🏽

hmmmmm...... $350 for a couple hours(I suppose speedy guys could do it faster I know I could leisurely do it in a couple) maybe ill reconsider just doing this for myelf lol. I do know a guy that works a regular job and has a legit hvac business on the side seems like a good idea to me. I mentioned elsewhere I did commecial install for 20 years but never learned service so its not a problem for me to drage one of these thing into a house and set it up I just need to know the smart stuff. I left the trade because I mostly did a lot of really high up in the air, dangerous types of situations and I just dont want to do it anymore the money isnt worth getting killed over. "this job requires harnesses!" next thing you know you're in a shaft standing on beam reaching thru a damper blade trying to uninstall a damper motor with 200ft of air below you getting yelled at on the radio to hurry up. No thx im done.

This is why I do commercial. I don’t like homeowners in my grill. I have no interest in hearing about their lives or listening to them lie about all the crap they didn’t try to get the thing running when it’s obvious as hell the guy was in the furnace making things worse. Not necessarily in this case, but you all know what I mean.
@Nine_883

@Harry Maybe you do not understand how much homeowners lie about what the "internet" tricks homeowners have already tried before they end up calling a professional and in the process have made the problem worse and more complicated. People like you is why I stay in commercial where the customer is not tied down by cost and have called me to pix the problem first before they have rewired the system backwards and forwards trying tin impress their wife and save a couple of dollars. Many times their KZbin efforts have costed them more money.

Someone needs to sue these mfg for making these garbage wheels. I have to replace the one in my heil on average once a year! The furnace is 15 years old but since I have replaced literally every part on it its basically new so I hate getting rid of it over this stupid crap. I dont have any back pressure issues the wheels are just JUNK ive tried ordering from different places all the same. This summer really pissed me because I replaced the wheel then realized the motor was shot and replaced it to. Then we had 1 day left of really hot weather and the outdoor motor kicked it. Its on a shelf till spring. I cant complain about the motors they lasted this entire time I just hope the replacements arent junk I did sheetmetal for 20 years but sadly never learned service as I only did commerical install so im learning this crap now to help out in my elder years when im not making the big bux anymore. I already know if I call a shop I can take whatever price of the parts are x 2 or even 3 screw that. Im probably going to sign up for pennfoster online. Many say it costs too much im like its the cost of 1 visit. I already have the mechanical knowledge I feel I can really benefit from it.

Right on. I highly recommend doing the schooling, it will be worth it for you if you like hvac work. I was Wondering with these wheels if throwing a few tack welds would work? They are like clamped over the main center portion which is really dumb. I might give that a try next time. I’ve only seen it on Goodman’s so far. Not many however. Cheers

@@diyhvacguy I bet if you were to press the shaft out of the hub of that wheel, you would find it galled up, and hence a time burner to clean it up (if you could have gotten it out without damage to the fan and motor shaft). I think your repair was spot on in how your got the motor and wheel out of the fan housing. Did the factory assemble this wrong, with the square headed set screw not tightened to the shaft flat?
