Great teaching video. When I first saw that it was a 21 minute video, I was reluctant to watch it but I was very happily surprised. You didn't pet the dog, talk to your kids, complain about the weather, look for a screwdriver or any other irrelevant stuff. You went to work, carefully explaining everything that you did. The 21 minutes just flew by. I learned everything that I wanted to know. Thanks.

Mr. fix-it help me change my lamp socket I was going to get new lamp, but thought that I could possibly just changed it. I am 67 years old and was diagnosed with Early onset Alzheimer’s , before I was able to do a lot of projects without even giving it a second thought. I put in sprinklers, re-wired valves, etc. Things they don’t come very easy anymore. Beyond what he probably thought he could do for anybody. Explain step-by-step how to do this, I had to rewind it several times due to my short term memory but my sense of accomplishment , he gave me that feeling again. Just know that you are best thank you so much

I know this video is 8 years old but I just wanted to thank @ESRepair. I was actually able to fix my lamp by replacing the 3 way switch with a regular one. I had a hard time figuring out which wire was hot and neutral, so I hope I got it right. Anyway, thanks so much! You are a brilliant man!

Thank you for this video. It was clearly explained and helped me repair a table lamp where one of the three settings (low) did not work. My wife hates the higher brightness settings, so she has not been using the lamp much recently. My lamp did not have the lock nut at the bottom of the socket, as it had a screw cap at the base of the bulb, to take the socket apart. Replacing the lamp socket was easy and took less than 10 minutes. Your explanation on the wiring (hot, neutral) was very helpful. Just think, there are local repair facilities here that charge $80.00 to repair a lamp. Thanks for the video and helping me save some money.

This tutorial is STILL helping people! I just fixed my floor lamp switch (a bit more difficult due to how it's constructed) that had burnt out the switch in an ugly mini-explosion. Everyone wanted me to throw the lamp away. Why? Everything is solid except the switch. Your how-to took the fear out of fixing stuff that has to do with electricity. I was very careful to pause the vid and work on mine, pause then work, until I was assured I was doing it exactly as instructed. Voilá, like new again! Thank you for helping to keep the landfills from growing!

I like the detail this video provides. Very thorough with attention to how to correctly install the new socket so that it is safe. If the hot and neutral wires are crossed, this can lead to a dangerous lamp and Mr. Fix-it explains very well how to recognize the difference between the hot and neutral wires.

Hello Mr. Fix-It! Thanks so much for helping me get the little cup base of the old socket. Secondly, I knew that one wire was smooth and one was rough, but I didn’t know which was which or which went to silver and which went to brass, so that was helpful. Finally, it might sound silly, but your “tighty righty lefty loosey” rhyme is going to help me for the rest of my life. (My dad left when I was 6, so I never learned that stuff.)

Another Great Video Leah. I have a floor lamp I'm putting a light socket in, that takes a 3 way bulb, I looked through my socket bag and found one but it had 3 screws with a black screw and two silver screws. I looked in where the bulb goes, and saw it had the two contacts, but wasn't sure where to hook my 2 lamp cord wires. I do know, that the wide terminal on the PLUG IN is the Neutral wire. So hooked one wire to a sliver screw, the other wire to black screw, then screwed in a 3 way bulb, turned it on and my shop lights almost went out before I turned the switch off. So I surmised that this socket with 3 screws, must be for the Lamps with other bulbs hooked to the switch. So I looked through my socket bag again and found a socket with only 2 screws, but still had the extra contact where the bulb goes in. So tomorrow I will put this socket in the lamp and see if it works with the 3 way bulb. I'm not an electrician per say, but the socket with the 3 screws steered me to KZbin to see what the difference is with the two 3 way sockets. I'm still a little perplexed though by the 3 screws socket. Thanks for the Video.

Thanks! I like it that you speak slowly so we can more easily hear and see what you are talking about. Very thorough video. One of the other videos here was replacing the innards of the socket and reusing the old cardboard insulator and casing. This makes more sense. BTW, when you disconnect the old socket, you can use a Sharpie or something to mark the hot wire, and just duplicate the hookup on the new socket. It’s good to know the way to identify which is which (especially of you have to cut the cord), but common sense is a good thing as well. Speaking of which, when my husband was still just my roommate he started “repairing” a lamp with out unplugging it! He touched a screwdriver to a wire and BOOM! I said something like (gritting my teeth), “Why did you not unplug it?”, and he said it was turned off so the flow of electricity should have been cut. Um....yep. I married him anyway. He’s smarter now. :-/

QUESTION: I dropped a lamp I like very much from the 1990s that is touch sensitive with three levels of brightness. Originally, the bulb would screw in 100% of the way until it stopped and was very firm. The bulb did not wiggle or wobble at all after being screwed in. However, after being dropped, the bulb screws in about 99% of the way and "almost" feels firm. However, the bulb never screws in 100% of the way now. The bulb will always continue to rotate. Once this point of 99% has been reached, the bulb wiggles and wobbles back and form. The bulb does still work, and the lamp still turns on and off with three different levels of brightness. But, I'm concerned there would be a potential electrical problem or fire problem if the lamp has a wiggly bulb plugged in like that. What are your thoughts? Is this lamp safe to use in such a way? And also is this something that can be repaired? It looks like there are places online far from my home that repair lamps. But, touch sensitive lamps like this have not been common for a long time. Any help would be appreciated.
