All I want to do is flush the toilet without having to take the lid off to do it manually. It gets old, especially in the middle of the night. The plastic rod broke. I bought a new long, bent rod attached to the handle, thinking it would be enough, but no. I was so discouraged it didn't work. The grid at the bottom of the tank is broken and the narrow plastic tower inside the bigger one doesn’t stay put. (Forgive my primitive language lol.) But your toilet looks like mine and now I know it’s the flush valve that's the problem. I need a whole new one of those. Thank You, Jesus! Speaking of, your shirt is giving me encouragement and a reminder during a trial apart from this dumb toilet. The Lord is with me. I will believe what He said, not what I see. Great video. FYI, that little pice of caulk you removed from the hole underneath the tank should be resealed. Between your video and some forums (where I found the calk info) I was able to tackle this job.

I just changed out the flush lever on my Mansfield toilet, it was causing constant running on mine. I think if I were going to as much trouble as you did I would replace both the lever and fill valve mechanism at the same time.

1:07 All that work because the seal, that the tube sits on, was bad???? No no no. Loosen the nut on the flush handle. Pull the little black hose out of the white round thing. Unscrew just the white round thing. Pull out the tube. It comes right out. Remove the bad seal from the groove it's in, at the bottom of the tank (inside the tank), and replace it with a new seal. Takes about 10 minutes. The new seal costs 3-4 bucks. lol

Freaking awesome. I was wondering why it’s this difficult for just a bad rubber seal. Just saw another video of a guy unscrewed 2 part (flush handle and white tube screw) and replaced the seal. Much easier and quicker. Appreciate your input to find a quick solution

Thank you so much. We purchased the replacement kit for an old Mansfield toilet with an imprint of Mar 22 1965 inside the lid. The people at Mansfield were helpful in helping us find proper replacement parts. Everything seems to work, except the lever attached to the handle is too short, and slips out of the plastic opening. The standard lengths aren't long enough for our toilet. Do you have a suggestion?

You're welcome. There is a trim-to-fit handle that you can buy. I have never used one, but it looks like it's a universal handle that you can trim the rod to fit. Hope this helps.

Very well done video. Question please. * I am converting the current Mansfield Flush valve with a flapper style soon. Is that Mansfield Flush valve a 2" diameter or 3" inches? Looks like 2 inches on the video, but wanted to be sure before I buy the tank rebuild kit so I get the correct size. (I am replacing the fill valve as well and buying a complete kit with tank bolts). Thank you for the question. I don't know the size. I bought the new valve off the shelf from Home Depot. I look up online the one I bought, and the product spec says 3.15" width. I have since moved and don't have Mansfield toilets any more to take a measurement off of. I agree, if you are going to replacing the flush valve then you might as well do all of it at the same time. Hope it goes well with no leaks.

If you are replacing the entire valve like I did, then yes. If you only need a new seal at the bottom of the plunger, then no. You will have to unscrew the top where the fill tube goes into, then remove the plunger. Then you can replace the seal.

So a bad flush valve can cause the water to run constantly on the inside of the bowl as well correct ?From time to time the tank sounds like its filling up and residual water is always running on the inside of the bowl. Because i changed the fill tank valve and that didn't help.

Yes. If the seal is bad, then it will leak into the bowl. Before replacing the entire flush valve, try replacing the seal under the plunger. In the thumb nail pic that is the red seal. The top where the fill tube goes in can be unscrewed and the plunger can be taken off. Then the seal can be replaced. This will usually fix the problem.

You have to do basically the same thing if your flapper flush valve goes bad, like if it gets cracked or anything You can always just try replacing the gasket in a Mansfield tower instead of replacing the whole thing- such is the equivalent to replacing the flapper

Thanks Adam for a very informative video. About 4 min in, you looked at and removed some kind of white plug. I have one in my bowl too but it appears to be an actual plug for the hole. Since the toilet operated fine with the plug in place, I opted to leave it. What is the plug for and do you have any problems without it?

My toilet was going off like that too. That is why I replaced the flush valve. The seals at the bottom were deteriorating causing the problem. I did change the float first cause it was sticking. It helped but it was not the main problem.

You are welcome. If your toilet is running and not leaking out then, you can replace the seal for the valve. Here is another video where I did just that. The original hexnut is completely different from the one that comes with the replacement. The toilet gasket is supposed to fit over the hexnut and the tank is then lowered into the toilet. The gasket is NOT to be placed onto the toilet and the tank lowered onto it. It is impossible to fit the gasket over the new hexnut since the new hexnut is not circular like the original. You MUST use the original hexnut and fit the new gasket over it. Otherwise, when the toilet is flushed, you'll get water coming out from under the tank.

Was looking for a comment about how tight to tighten the three bolts. I was worried that I was either A: not going to tighten it enough resulting in leakage or B: tighten it too much and break the tank(not sure fully if that's a thing...didn't want to sit down to take a crap and have the tank explode behind me from pressure hehe) but was looking for a maybe C: tighten as much as you want this shit won't break (I have no idea I'm not a plumber). Just a thought though.

I hear you. I don't have a torque speck for the bolts. I've had to do this several times, and I tighten them down till it feels good. Then fill the tank. If it leaks, tighten it some more. If I hear a pop sound, then stop and hope I didn't break it. Thats the best advice I can give you. I wish I could give you an exact answer.

In theory, couldn't you just replace the red gasket without replacing the whole valve? This would avoid the hassle of taking the whole tank off and potentially breaking it.

I tried doing that on a different toilet before. But it still leaked. Plus the plastic was getting dry and brittle. So replacing the whole thing made sense for my situation.

If it still leaks when you replaced that red gasket, then you put that gasket on wrong. You should be able to spin the gasket when it's put on right. The red gasket does the job unless parts of the whole valve broke or something. The little cap on the top end of my valve broke off, I was able to glue it back on but pretty sure I'll end up replacing the whole valve sooner or later.

Mansfield toilets are such trash and so poorly designed. The seal needs to be replaced all the time, the "tower" "flap" doesn't always settle right. The fill mechanism is garbage. Just such bad toilets.
