Hi Mr Wakefield, I was so pleased to come across your KZbin segment on how to fix a running toilet! I'm an Aussie lady currently in lockdown due to the Covid virus and couldn't get a plumber to fix the toilet which was running all the time, the only time it didn't was when I turned off the water intake tap so I wasn't wasting water. Being in my 60's now and recently divorced I no longer have my husband to do all the plumbing (!!) so I decided to do some research and fix it myself. And while I was looking on the internet I found your piece! Fifteen minutes after watching, my toilet problem was fixed! So I saved myself a lot of money calling out a plumber and now I feel so self-confident because I did it myself! Thank you so much!

I love the cut away toilet tank. Makes it so easy to see what’s going on
@BillBailey-o3o11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the videos Roger and easy to understand instructions. My tank has 3 bolts instead of 2 and when the flush valve was turned all the way it was difficult to screw in the 3rd bolt. I resolved this by rotating the flush valve back. Also my bolt replacements came with rubber tapered washers for 2 per bolt along with a metal washer. Took a couple tries to realize I only needed the rubber washers inside the tank and not on both sides. The metal washers I used for the 3 nuts to avoid cracking the porcelain. Because my original bolts and nuts had fused together (replaced with brass plated hardware), it took about 2 hours to saw them off with a metal hacksaw and round handle since this was the only way to access the bolts. As an Information Technology Manager and professional trainer, your video seemed to only handle the "happy path" under ideal conditions and didn't address older or less optimal edge cases. Still Roger , I appreciated your presentation and have subscribed to your channel. Like computer software, you also need to account for the exceptions, and I'd also be interested to know exactly how the fill valve works internally to shut off the water. Seems like the float is restricted to a certain level that somehow stops the flow of water coming into the toilet. Then again that the way geeks are we want to know how everything works.

The most clear, concise and comprehensive instructional videos. And I’ve seen a lot - on many subjects beyond plumbing. I’ve done it all before but have an ongoing problem with a toilet “ghost” flushing. Suggestion-rather than adjusting everything at once, I’m making one adjustment at a time. This way if it happens again on this or another toilet I may be able to identify the source of the problem

This is perfect instruction..especially for a non plumber. I have been waiting for my husband to attempt to fix our downstairs toilet since we had our well pump replaced. I use this bathroom mainly, but for whatever reason has not functioned properly since the well pump replacement, almost 8 months ago & I am tired of turning the water valve off after each flush. Since, it won't fix itself & my husband, "Will get to it"later than sooner- I am tackling this feat. It wants to continuously run after the tank is full...I felt around the seal...wiped it out multiple times thinking a piece of sediment has caused it not to seal. I have disassembled the flapper..still no success. I am going to replace the flapper to start..& take it from there. Thank you for sharing this easy instruction video.....from the done nagging to do it myself wife.

Great video and easily understood. I have a slow leak, probably a tank full every 2-3 days. Replaced the flapper and cleaned surface of the flush valve but still an issue. Next step is to replace the whole piece. Probably due for it anyways as it has been 10-12 years.

Roger, I agree with the multitude, here, and applaud your excellent training vid. I do have one suggestion: Do a similar vid USING AN OLD TOILET. l venture to say most of us do not have a clean demonstration toilet that we're working on. Teach viewers how to deal with the realities of rusted nuts, bolts, deteriorated components, etc... This is what most of us will find when we make a repair. It would be great to see how a true pro deals with these challenges. Many thanks.

having a lot of fun with an old toilet, American standard. couldn't just replace the flapper valve since it was made such that it wouldn't come off, tried looking for replacement parts on company site but they didn't carry any for older models, bought a full replacement kit from a hardware store, said compatible with 99% of toilets, figured id give it a shot. the gasket didn't fit the bowl opening. so next i tried putting the old gasket on the fitting, that also isn't working so far, will try some more once my brothers able to help me. just frustrating how company's non-standardize their parts because they don't want you to replace the small components, they want you to have to buy a whole new toilet. still hoping i can make this work but this is just repairs around the house as usual, always having to pull an improvised 'fix' to make stuff work.

The right tools and a little know-how makes all the difference. The biggest concern I have is water deposits "cementing" the nuts to bolts and damaging the hardware or porcelain while trying to loosen them.
