If you don't own a Ford transmission line disconnect tool, you can disconnect the rubber hoses at the front of the trans cooler after the grill (and maybe even the front bumper) is pulled off. One line has a yellow mark, the other one has a blue mark, so after pulling off each hose, mark the line with "B" for blue line and "Y" for yellow so they don't get mixed up.

this is a really well put together vid.. I wish i had seen this before I decided to get ride of my 2001 Tribute 185,000 miles.. it broke my heart to part with it... but the Tranny was shot and I just couldn't justify the $4,000 and up replacement cost.. If I could have found a used one like you had here I would have done just (when I say I I mean my trusty mechanic) thanks for sharing this.. btw my Tribute was listed as being worth $167 so I got plenty of value from the 17 years that I had it.. i paid $22,500 new so it cost me $0.12 per mile (22,500 divided by 185,000)

I appreciate the feedback my goal is to make a good video to save the diyer money. I agree with the cost and its just not economical unless you can cut out the labor. These tribute are what i consider a versatile vehicle , and I haul all kinds of stuff in mine from lumber , pipes and other cargo that lift hatch on the rear glass is handy. I thank you again for the feedback and thanks for watching.

@@s33therfan one of things that amazed me was how you casually go about unscrewing stuff and then knowing how to put them all together again.. I too used mine to haul all sorts of stuff including professional mowing equipment on trailer.. I really like the torque acceleration mine had.. one thing I didn't like was rust in the wheel wells and on the rear doors.. i would encourage you to do more of these kinds of vids..

Bro... Thanks a million for doing this video. I'm just some broke @$$ Hillbilly trying to keep my Escape running. I had no idea this was possible without some kinda Shop Lift! You have inspired me to at least attempt this. I think this is way beyond my personal abilities.. BUT.. you inspired me to try. Thanks a whole bunches!

These tribute/escape are not too terrible , compared to others. I definitely understand the situation , trying to keep a good rig going but not worth spending a fortune. Tackling this yourself is for sure the way to go. Keeping things organized, always thinking ahead along with labeling everything is key to having the swap go smoothly. Best of luck on your project and I appreciate you watching.

Nice job. You have an easy going style, very thorough and make it look easy. I tend to do more "cussing" when I'm wrenching. Are you holding the camera with your right hand when working because I only see your left hand in the video. (Your nickname could be "The Left Handed Mechanic :) " Makes it harder to do when you are just working with one hand. Thanks.

I’m curious why you removed the brake calipers and lower struts? Unless you decided to do it to give yourself more room? The lower ball joint could have been separated and the whole assembly pulled away but still intact to get the axles out. Not being a smart Alec by any means

You did say you were putting a 2005 transmission in a 2002 tribute with a 3.0l AWD right? I've found that there are 3 different trannys for 2002 tribute but only one for the 2005. I just wanted to reverify that you had no problems making the 2005 work in a 2002 before I go buy a trasmission

The cd4e is the same from 2001-2006 . Mine was just front wheel drive but you should be able to swap your differential over to any cd4e in that year range. Thanks for watching

@@s33therfan I guess I misunderstood the year of your tribute. However , a local transmission shop told me today that in 02 and maybe 03 ford tried three different final drive gear ratios and if I use the wrong transmission it would cause the computer to throw codes. So I guess I'm stuck with a very specific transmission or maybe find a computer to match the transmission. By the way good video and thank you for making it.

Excellent Video! Thank you from Australia. Ours is a 4 X 4 version. Do I remove the transfer case before dropping the gearbox? Does that mean I need to remove the exhaust or not? Your calmness and videoing is really very well done and appreciated. I saw another video which advised to remove the whole exhaust, alternator and rear manifold. What do you think?
@s33therfan
@s33therfan 2 жыл бұрын
The transfer case makes things more difficult. You may be able to work around it , if you can get all the bolts from the transmission. But from other vehicles usually easier to drop the transfer case and anything else that gets in the way. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

@s33therfan 4 жыл бұрын
As long as you can access all of your transmission bolts and differential bolts etc you should not have to remove it. However removing the exhaust on some is not very difficult and clears up a lot of much needed space to work . Great question and thank you for watching.

@@s33therfan If you don't live in the rust belt, it will be much easier to remove the exhaust pipes and manifolds. You'll need a 13mm socket with a 6" & 3" extension available, and a 13mm wrench, plus a 10-12" Crescent wrench to remove the large EGR pipe nut from the rear EGR tube.

My question is do I need to replace the entire torque converter how much will this cost just to fix a solenoid clutch sensor?
@s33therfan
@s33therfan 3 жыл бұрын
The torque converter solenoid can be accessed by draining and removing the pan from the front. The solenoid bolts to the valve body. May be very well possible the torque converter is at fault which would require tran removal. These cd4e transmissions have a lot of issues, and have had updates/upgrades over the years to correct them. Thanks for watching.

How long did it take you to do the full removal and replacement?
@s33therfan
@s33therfan 4 жыл бұрын
I spent 2 full days . It seemed to take longer swapping over parts more than anything. There were damaged rusted parts on the donor transmission I could not use. Really it all went pretty smooth , the only thing that slowed me down was the subframe but it sure was not worth removing just to make it easier. Using an impact anywhere you can speeds things up a lot .Thank you for the feedback and thanks for watching

Is there any filter for the gearbox
@s33therfan
@s33therfan 2 жыл бұрын
There is , but it is only replaced when performing a rebuild. You have to open the case up and replace it. It is in there with the pump and other components. They stress the importance of fluid changes on these types. A lot will recommend every 30k , change and flush. Really great question. Thank you for the feedback.
