Currently doing this on the 3.4 Pontiac montana. Had a blown head gasket,and the leaking oil killed the motor mount and that caused damage to the CV axle. Great video,thanks for uploading.

Update,I got mine fixed. The CV axle fell apart when I pulled it off,the bearings inside of it were completely shot. The CV boot was bad and allowed water inside it,that mixed with the grease and burned it up. One thing I was not expecting was when I pulled the CV off,a butt load of transmission fluid came pouring out,so be prepared for that if you are replacing your main CV axle. Just like in this video,my main and bottom motor mount went bad,I ignored it for a few weeks,which caused the cv and wheel bearings to go bad. Had I took the time and spent 35$ I could have avoided spending a full day and almost 300$ to fix the damage caused by ignoring the bad motor mount. So if you are feeling a hard jerk when switching to reverse or drive,dont ignore it folks,it pays to get it addressed right away. This video shows you exactly what you are in for to swap out the mounts. OEM mounts cost 250$+,but a found one online for less than 30$ Just make sure they are they exact same style and its it's ok. Fyi I'm dealing with the 02 Pontiac Montana FWD with the 3.4 GM

I've done this job yesterday along with the transmission mount on the driver side (MUCH easier). This is not a job for a beginner or anyone scared of dirty jobs. The root cause of the problem is the crankshaft seal that fails with age and mileage, and begins to drip oil onto the harmonic balancer pulley and the engine mount underneath. Most people don't know this, but engine oil slowly attacks and dissolves rubber that's not oil-resistant (aka BUNA rubber). Eventually, both the harmobal and the mount fail. So, be prepared to deal with lots and lots of seriously disgusting sludge all over that area. The really challenging part is getting the old mount out along with putting the new one in. There's nowhere near enough clearance there unless you're willing to drop the subframe, and the threaded studs will want to snag on everything. I had to take off the upper metal bracket in place before I was able to pull out what was left of the old mount. It also should go without saying that you must use a block of softer wood between the jack and the engine unless you want to add a cracked oil pan to your to do list. Lining up the holes in the engine block and the bracket takes patience. There is actually a small notch in the transmission housing you can put the jack under to kinda nudge the motor. A gentle tapping with the hammer also helps to line things up enough to hand-thread the three bolts before you torque them down all the way. I'm not normally the type to say this, but do consider having a repair shop replace the crankshaft seal, the harmonic balancer pulley, and the mount if you can comfortably afford the labor costs.

What is a decent motor mount that won't break the bank? Everybody on the internet is saying that anchor and DEA are junk. I am not looking to spend $80 at the general motors dealership. I am not real hard on my car will a anchor or DEA Mount be good enough for me?

I must confess that the mount are casualties to cranking the motor forward to reach the backside for plugs,o2 sensor or crankshaft sensor or exhaust..don't take much to make a small tear which will start to leak

These are the beginning to the 4T65E transmission failing with the engine able to shift they throw the CV axle out of correct alignment causing constant vibration to the transmission differential causing sun gear failure.

I had a real bad vibration under acceleration. My front mount was real bad. I replaced the front mount, got rid of 95 % of my vibration under acceleration. I still have a slight vibration under acceleration. Should I flip my dog bone bushings, or replace the transmission mount, or both? 2001 Grand Prix SE
@normalhuman9260
@normalhuman9260 Жыл бұрын
I would consider checking the CV axle really well if it's only under acceleration that you feel it. A completely destroyed bottom motor mount "like the one in the video" can put so much strain on the CV axle that it will slightly warp it. I had the same problem,head gasket blew,the leaking oil killed my motor mount,I fixed the leak but ignored the mount,took no time at all of driving with the bad mount to destroy the CV axle. It acted like it had a bad wheel bearing or even a bad tie rod,but it was a lightly bent cv. Hope this helps.

@@normalhuman9260 It's working okay now. I replace the tranny Mount flipped the dog bones at the front of the torque struts or dog bones and replace the bushings at the motor side and replace the transmission mount. The anchor motor mount that went bad in 6 weeks I temporarily shimmed up with three eighths thick piece of wood for now. I have a new AC Delco Mount sitting here it's working so nice I hate to touch it. 😂

@@mrbreezeet1 was it easy to flip the dog bones? I assume once you remove the bolt you can easily pull the rubber out of it and flip it? Also I'm just curious,but does yours have issues with the bulb sockets? I use replace the bulbs left and right,then realized it was the sockets that were the problem,and I've heard that other GMs have the same issue. I'm just suck of buying new bulbs lol. If you have a min to give your input I would greatly appreciate it. I'm dealing with a 02 Pontiac montana with the 3.4
@mrbreezeet1
@mrbreezeet1 Жыл бұрын
@@normalhuman9260 Yes I didn't have any tail lights at all when I bought it used I had to replace the sockets. You don't remove the dog bone bushings at the front, just unbolt it and work on it on the car or you could take it off and put it in a vise, but you wedge a screwdriver in between the metal frame and the bushing and spray silicone spray in there all the way. Put the nut and bolt back through and used to wrenches to twist the bolt in the direction of tightening, and it should flip like that. I got the bushings for the motor side at joro they were the cheapest even with shipping. The old bushings were pretty loose I cut the rubber ears off and they pretty much fell right out. I sprayed a bunch of silicone on the new bushings and pressed them right in with a big vice. I would change the bushings at the motor side also. You can buy the whole dog bones with bushings but it was cheaper to just replace the bushings, and save the old metal part.

Yep the motor mount needs replacing when your harmonic balancer goes out(i notice a new one on the car)..thats a sign that motor mounts are shot..trans mount usually last forever cause it stays dry for the most part..but I replace the timing cover gasket & new seal with a new motor mount & balancer..all them need replacing at the same time..get all the parts for $80 with shipping at rock auto

You are better off putting all the bolts in first so you don't have to deal with trying to line the bolts up using the jack. Also, don't put the jack in the way of where you need to remove the bolts. Air ratchet use would have worked rather than box end wrenches.

Air compressors are great because they don't run out of juice, battery tools have their purpose as well. If you like using torque sticks to get your torque in range, definitely do not use battery with them, you'll over-torque every time.
