Irvin, your video is great. It's clear and to the point. I had never done this task before and have now managed to do it first time round thanks to your instruction :)

Main takeaway: that little strip that holds the big overgrip tape together in the original package -- that is NOT throw-away. It is the finishing tape! Addendum: Unwind the whole overgrip tape. At the inner, tapered end is a little bit of covered stickiness to help get you started.

Good tips about the start of the install starting on a corner of the buttcap and also marking where to cut it with a pen, but I see a couple issues with this instruction too. For one thing, he didn't stretch the grip as he was laying it onto the handle; you should stretch the grip and pull on it before you lay it down so that it sits tighter against itself and it also kind of activates the tack in my experience. Secondly, I noticed on the first couple rotations, the overgrip didn't lay completely flush and it was raised a little bit on the overlaps, which is a problem because that will make the grip more uncomfortable to hold and cause your skin on your hands to rub against the grip too much and possibly cause blisters. I also noticed along the length of the overgrip he had air bubbles or little creases still left over, which can also cause blisters. Just make sure it's flush, tight, and consistently spaced/overlapped all the way up and you'll be good.

Using the pen to mark the end is a nice detail, but nobody I know does this. Everyone just folds the end with an angle to make it tapered. Useful for when you don't have pen and scissors with you on the court (most people don't) Even better is when the overgrip is already pre-cut on both ends, but those are rare.

Hi. Is it true that you should play a few hours with the grip before installing the overgrip, so that the overgrip stay in place and also so that when you remove the overgrip to replace it for a new one, the grip lasts more and is in a better state? Or can I simply install the overgrip immediately after installing a grip?

This is the wrong way. He starts with the narrow end at the bottom, whereas the narrow end should end at top. No need to do any cutting. If there was any need to cut, the manufacturer would have done that to begin with.
@tennisexpress9 жыл бұрын
+Athar Abbas He did start with the narrow end at the top. If you watch at the beginning when he starts wrapping, the tape is whats holding the over-grip to the replacement grip. Had he started with the wide end at the top, there wouldn't be any tape to keep the grip secured.
@AtharAbbas9 жыл бұрын
Tennis Express when I say bottom, I meant bottom if the racket. May be you are referring to that as top. As for starting with broad part at the bottom of the racket, we don't need the sticky bit, friction and tight wrapping is generally enough. May be I'm wrong, but that's how I use.
@tennisexpress9 жыл бұрын
+Athar Abbas Ooohh, my apologies, I see what you mean now. Over grips can really be wrapped however you choose, although most commonly they are wrapped how it is shown in our video.
@th600mike39 жыл бұрын
+Athar Abbas Naw dog you're wrong. Doing it that way leaves a lump on one side of the bottom of the grip, making it asymmetric.
@thefridgeman8 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. At first I though...what, I have been doing it wrong, all these years. Than I saw his hatchet job with the scissors and pen. Nope. I am doing it right. The cut end is supposed to come in the end. At the cap just overlapping the band will be enough to hold it. If you don't believe me, unwind the grip from any racquet. Now tell me where the "cut" end is...you will see it is at the end, not at the cap. From the factory.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG...Why do you think it already has a tapered end? And he used scissors to replicate what's already there at the other end. That's for the top, NOT the bottom. I've been doing this longer than this guy has been alive. You don't need scissors either. Notice the finishing piece of tape supplied with the overgrip? Notice its width..it's very narrow. He doesn't even address this piece of tape that's included in every overgrip. The reason it's narrow is because the tapered end is supposed to be at the top and the narrow finishing tape is all that's needed to cover the top IF you finish off with the narrowed overgrip. I've watched the pros on TV do this during a tournament and they used the wide end at the bottom. If you do this the way this guy shows, you have a wide end at the top and the included finishing tape won't cover it completely so you end up with the end of the overgrip sticking out of the finishing tape. Also notice the jagged end of the tape he had to cut off. This guy needs to go back to school.

yh, there are 2 ways to grip your racquet. one is with the taper side is at the butt and the second is the opposite. i would agree if you meant that you arent really MEANT to cut the grip, thats usually for replacement grips.
@wava21877 жыл бұрын
Don't be daft, to end perfectly on the pre-cut is ridiculous. You may have gotten used to it for your own racket, but try wrapping a Pro-Kennex with much shorter handle for one-handed backhands, and then a Head Speed Pro which is about twice as long. Trying to align the pre-cut part with the top of the handle will be much harder than just cutting where you need it to stop. Personally, I just cut without drawing a line, but if you're trying to match multiple rackets you can't just use up a full wrap if it isn't needed, and without a clean taper cut at the cap, your hand will be holding a lumpy handle. If you need to re-grip in a hurry, just don't bother cutting the top, but you always use the pre-cut taper at the cap.
