The main thing to know when you do it for the first time - it's not sticky, you can wrap/unwrap it as many times as you want, so just try it and redo if needed.

If you don't overlap enough, the grip will separate. Also, if you have a two handed BH, you can wrap it higher up toward the throat. This will give you plenty of cushioning for your second hand.

Even if it doesn't separate, I like the idea to have some overlap. Give me a little feel about where my hand stands.

I would add that if you use the finishing tape that comes with the overgrip, remove the backing before you begin wrapping as its tricky to remove while maintaining pressure/tension on the overgrip.
@DennisComito
@DennisComito 11 ай бұрын
The tapered end is supposed to be at the top, not the bottom like he shows. That's why the sticky end of the tape on the narrow end is there so it will hold the overgrip in place as you finish off with the included tape. Why do you think the finish tape is so narrow? It's because it's supposed to be used on the narrow end at the TOP of the racquet.

I’ve been wrapping my racquet for 41 years. I do it the way he shows it here (tapered end at the heel). I do overlap it more. I don’t have any extra at the end.

alternate idea...I start with the non tapered end and pull it really tight. It doesn't bunch up and create a seam. I overlap a bit more and it doesn't bother me because I use a 4 1/8 grip size. I use the whole wrap and wind up sticking the end with the adhesive and taper right at the very top of the grip. Works fine for me. And honestly with the Babolat with that elastic band it eliminates the need for the tape. YMMV.
@zolazon3009
@zolazon3009 4 жыл бұрын
I start with the non tapered end too, so no need for the scissors. And I will use all of over grip. His method use very little overlap. I prefer wider overlap that will give extra cushioning and ergonomics feel.

Thanks for the video. 3 things that work for me... I apply the square end of the over grip to the butt. That way, there is no cutting of the other end. I also overlap about 1/4 inch. then there is nothing to throw away at the end, it also provided more cushion as some have mentioned. The tape that comes with the over grips is usually crap, so I use electrical tape.

I go consistently 1/3rd coverage and never have extra to cut off and discard. My advice: do it a few times and get a feel of how much overlap you need. It does not have to be as little as 2mm, get a feel of your racquet. In 30+ years of wrapping racquets I've never done nor have I seen anyone cut off excess grip. Also, someone else said it, do unstick your sticky tape and tack it to something. Holding the top of your gripped racquet and trying to unstick the finishing tape is difficult.
@Cmi1267

cutting off excess grip is extremely common. I am not sure where you are from but here in London I know many tennis players who do that.

@@Cmi1267 ok. I live in the Caribbean and Toronto. I've played for over 30 years, never seen it done. Honestly. I wrap so there is a consistent overlap and it ends at the top. To each it's own. Happy hitting.

Easy to understand explanation. Don't know if it's the perfect overgrip though. Each to their own, I guess. Personally, I do it the other way around and ignore that little sticky tap at the end (your start) but fold the grip tape in on itself when I start on the bottom of the racket.
@alanb76
@alanb76 2 ай бұрын
With many of the overgrip tapes overlapping by 1/4 to 1/3 of the width allows the entire tape to be used and the end is already tapered so no need for scissors. Once you figure out what works for your brand of tape and grip diameter focus on consistently overlapping that much. At the start the hardest part is transitioning from the base wrap to the desired overlap in the second turn, but after a few tries you get the right spiral and tension to avoid wrinkles and get a good looking job.

He actually says that I need to start with the thicker side of the over grip wrap from the bottom so at the end I can stick it small part of the over grip wrap to the racquet with out holding it until I use the tape that comes with for the end of it and it makes sense to me.

A much better method is to start with the non-tapered end; just overlap the square end with the first wrap and then your're at exactly the same point as you would be if you had started with the tapered end. This way when you get to the top of the grip you will have the tapered end (no scissors required) and the little sticky part will lay right on the existing tape from the original grip (comes right off with a rub of the finger) and you don't end up with all that sticky build up on the grip around the butt end. Cheers.

This is actually how you DON'T put on the overgrip imo... The initial part of the overgrip, with the tapered side, is upside down: you should put on the straight edge of the tapered side of the grip along the butt cap and leaving the cut going down the grip during the first passage, in order to have an easier overlap and prevent bumps; furthermore, you can see that in the way shown in the video, there's the joint where the cut edge finishes that's exposed to the hand, while it should be covered during the first overlapping passage (min. 3:27)
@ziltando
@ziltando 4 жыл бұрын
That is a stupid feature of the Wilson overgrips. The way you suggest doing it would result in the overgrip running to the opposite direction than the actual grip. I recommend cutting that little joint off with the scissors and it'll run just fine like in the video.
@BuzzBolla
@BuzzBolla 4 жыл бұрын
@@ziltando that's not true, other overgrips have it and the fact that you suggest to cut it is the proof that that's simply the wrong way, otherwise they wouldn't be engineered like that. I can assure you that the grip doesn't slip, unless you don't keep it for 9 months straight 🤣
