How to Replace a Toilet Handle without a chain

What good is a toilet without a handle! To replace your broken toilet handle and arm, first pick up a replacement flush lever handle at a big box store or Amazon:

Replacing a stuck flush lever or a broken toilet handle is definitely a DIY task. The existing handle simply unscrews. And the replacement toilet handle easily screws on BUT ONLY FINGER TIGHT. No wrench needed.
IMPORTANT: The nut inside the toilet tank that secures the handle (old and new) will likely be reverse threaded. That means unscrewing the nut requires a clockwise rotation and tightening the nut requires counter-clockwise rotation.
If you have a bendable brass arm attached to your handle, it can be bent. Be Careful to follow package instructions to bend the brass toilet handle arm in the correct place.

If you don’t have a chain use paperclips, mine had 2 spots on the bottom of the same part that I chained paperclips together on and it worked fine. I got the part to go in the valve and it wasn’t long enough

I have the same issue. The white plastic tube with the square rotates when you flush, letting the arm fall out of the square. I'll need to rig something to attach the arm to make it stay inside the square.

Hi I have an old-fashioned toilet (maybe 100 years old) that had the metal connecting the flush valve and the handle broken. As I removed the broken parts the connecting part on the flush valve sunk back into the flush valve! I need to get that little plastic thing that the hook goes onto that connects the handle and valve back up so I can put a new piece of metal to connect the two. Any Ideas how to do so?

My new lever is slightly shorter than the previous one (that broke) and the lever won't stay "inside" the slot. As in, when you flush, the lever comes undone. I'm thinking of trying to just attach it with a small metal chain but do you know if there is a part for this or a way to ensure that the lever stays woven through the slot? Thanks.

Hey shloopy, Is the toilet not filling? Find out why the water keeps running out. The handle lifts the flapper ( or similar ) and let’s the water drain out of the tank. So make sure that hole is closed by the flapper. Then the water can fill the tank, lift the float and then the water filler will turn off. But tank has to be able to fill first! Thx for watching!

Okay I did everything you just said bc I have the chainless tank, BUT, the mechanism that goes up and down seems to have VERY strong suction bc it’s very hard to even lift up the plastic piece with the hole by hand! Is there any way to adjust that piece?

Update: My tank had a Mansfield flush valve, that’s why there was no chain. I ended replacing that and the tank-bowl gasket. It wasn’t purdy and I said a lotta swear words but I got it done. 😆

@@cocobutter3175 I bet you had the same issue I did since my flush valve did not have the typical float and chain. Go to the hardware store and buy a Mansfield flush valve. I replaced mine and the handle goes up and down easily now.
