If my valve is still in good shape, but the o-ring is leaky, is it safe to just unscrew the bleeder knob all the way and then just yank out the knob and replace the o-ring? The original unit seems to be made of stronger plastic than the replacement ones.

That is not a user replaceable part in the Air bleeder/tee (154689). Service manual only shows o-rings in the Air Relief Assembly Kit for Pentair Triton II (154687). Just buy a new 154689 and pray it does not crack. When in doubt about how tight you can torque something, just add teflon paste to the teflon tape, and make fine adjustments when the pump is live.
