So after a lot of struggling, sweating, and cussing, I did manage to get it out through this space. What finally got it out for me was the use of a wire hanger. I looped a doubled over wire hanger through the tension bolt mount hole on the alternator and then twisted it off so I then had a long handle that I could hold out of the way with my left hand and use the windshield cowl as support to essentially support the alternators weight and suspend it just at the constriction point. This way my right arm can be down into the cavity and can freely manipulate the alternator and any obstruction that it might hang on without worrying about losing my grip or dropping the alternator. The problem I was experiencing was being able to get enough leverage, maneuver through the space, and support the weight all with just one arm. When the car was up on jack stands on their lowest setting, it was slightly too high for me to be able to get one arm down far enough to do all of the above mentioned... definitely couldn't get both arms in at the same time. Anyway, the coat hanger (I'm sure Paracord would work just fine)gave me that extra support by utilizing my left arm up and out of the way. Hope this helps someone.

Easiest way it to undo the strut bolts and pop the axle out, tried it this way with 4 other people and this method was no dice, easiest way is to pop the axle take off the alternator mounting bracket then continue with the swap. If this way did work it would have been nice cause i had to do a coolant flush at the same time

This is the best and easiest way to do this. I recommend removing the bottom bolt on the AC dryer (the silver cylinder left of the overflow reservoir) so it can wiggle a little. Pulling it out through the top is a VERY tight squeeze so every 1/16 of an inch you can spare helps. Saved me a ton of money. Thanks dude.
@FlyLan2 жыл бұрын
I really hope this is going to be the last 1/16th" I need to getting the thing out, because so far I haven't been able to solve this rubix cube. I feel like I've been turning this alternator every imaginable orientation and pivot possible, but it hangs up every time. Thanks for the addition. Going to give it a try with the breaking of a new day.
@michaelallison20852 жыл бұрын
@@FlyLan I just did mine today...I had success when I turned the alternator pulley-side facing front (after removing the electrical connections) and then wiggling it a lot 😄 what's key is to run a cord or speaker wire through the upper bolt hole...it makes it a good deal easier to support and lift the alternator and keep it from falling back. A previous owner had already removed the lower bolt from the AC dryer so moving that a bit will help as well 👍

I just did this to an '05, you have to take a screw out of the upper and lower heat shield right there and bend them up/down (bend back when done, replace screw) to make room to get it out, not fun, but WAY better than the "proper" way to change an alternator on one of these sick ass street demons.

@@FlyLan if you're struggling with it my dad said it was a bit extreme but what I did was that bolt mount on the heat exhaust manifold there's like that lip I took the heat shield off and cut the bolt mount completely off with a grinder that gave me just enough room and then when I put everything back I just put that piece back in like a spacer
@FlyLan2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I actually managed to get it out this morning. I took a wire coat hanger and ran it through the alternator bolt mounting hole and then twisted it off.the other end I fashioned a handle so I had something I could hold on to with my left hand up above and out of the way, but still supporting the weight of the alternator while my right arm was down in the cavity manipulating the alternator. The biggest issue I was having was supporting the weight of the alternator, trying to maneuver it and any hose/line it might be getting caught on all while not losing my grip and dropping it with just one hand. I'm not super tall and even with the car on the lowest notch on my jack stands I could just barely get one arm down far enough to grab the alternator, but couldnt get both arms or even the one hand around on the bottom side of the alternator which made it difficult to get the leverage I needed to work it back and forth through the space. This East Texas heat and humidity drains the energy and hydration from you as soon as the sun breaks the horizon, which leads to muscle fatigue fairly quickly. For me, the coat hanger made all the difference. I imagine some Paracord would work just as well, anything to make a handle so that your left hand (supported by the windshield wiper cowl) can be utilized to essentially suspend the alternator right at the point that it needs to pass through and then your right arm and hand can be weight free down in the space to manipulate the alternator and surrounding obstacles. Anyway, thanks for the reply regardless!
@FlyLan2 жыл бұрын
@@honesttoolreviews6444 PS. I couldn't get that shield bolt out (mine too was rust seized) so I sprayed penetrant on it and tried again, but no luck. I got out my reciprocating saw and some bi-metal carbide blades and was going to cut the bolts top and bottom nut off, but took a break to think before I went cutting things off and that's when I thought about what the issues I was having were and how I could solve them. That's when I decided the biggest issue (other than fitting it through the hole) was holding it in place and being able to turn it with one hand. So my solution was the coat hanger method and it worked (after about 20-30 minutes of wiggling it back and forth with the right hand while supporting it with the left).
