PT Cruiser Alternator Replacement - Complicated As Usual

Today, I decided to take you guys along with me as I attempt to replace the alternator on this 2007 PT Cruiser Touring. As I have found out over the past year, nothing on PT Cruisers is easy to fix. THERE'S A BETTER WAY: Shocks me to see this video still getting as many views as it is haha. Not long ago I put together another alternator video in which I replaced one on my personal 2004 PT Cruiser GT by removing the CV axle rather than unbolting the motor mounts. I can't say that way of doing it was any easier, but the video might at least give some of you a better perspective of the job. THERES EVEN A WAY BETTER WAY AND SHOULDN'T TAKE U NO MORE THAN 40 MINUTES MAX..you about it by removing water reservoir on top and removing heat shield and shaving off the EAR of the MANIFOLD..with a grinder.. and shave off part of the shield from same side of the ear of manifold to pull alternator out from there.ull see what I mean when u get there..way better than spending hours taking axels off or bringing down motor DONT HAVE TO THIS WAY..any [e-mail]..GOOD LUCK.

PT/GT alternator can and will come out through the top ,(IF) you remove the nut and the one bolt on the coolant recovery bottle. Once it's out it's pretty straight forward getting the alt out through the top. Beats along the axle out, and removing mounts and doing all sorts of other stuff that's totally unnesisary. Job takes all of two maybe three hours. With hand tools. It's tight, but not impossible. On a regular PT it should be a lot easier

This video led me astray. All you need to do is to remove the coolant reservoir from the firewall and you'll have access to the heat shield over the alternator. two ten mm bolts and one 13 mm nut and then the 15mm bolts for the alternator are accessible. If you put a pry bar on the left engine mount and gently rock it you can pull the alternator up easily between the exhaust manifold heat shield and the A/C tank. This is the way the job is supposed to be done. Thanks for the video, but I was saved by the people in the comments who told me to take it out the top instead of fussing with axles and motor mounts and jacks.

you can get it from the top. remove the heat shield and power steering hose, out she goes.

Pulling it out the top is WAAAAY smarter than the method shown. Once the coolant reservoir is removed you have full access to the adjustment bold on the alternator. Good call.

if you ever have to do this job again when looking at the alternator from the wheel well unbolt the alternator only turn it so the pully is up twist it virtually and it will drop to the drive shaft and a bit of jiggling it pops out. but with that said it I did it this way the first time I changed one and discovered the easier way by accident the second time lol nice video keep it up

I just did my 2005 Turbo PT cruiser 3 days ago! I ONLY removed coolant bottle. Its a tight fit but it comes right out of the top of the engine.. I first went under the vehicle to disconnect the wires.. Literally a 15min job

Your exaggerateing a bit there. (15 minutes). Unless you've done dozens of these ( on PTs) your going to be hard pressed to do this job in under about 2 hours. That's removal and replacement

and to clear it up on begin able to I did it today in 3 hours . simply took the air conditioning tank a ever so gentle push it to the far conerer take off a heat guard conveniently in the way and one bracket holding three brake lines so it gives the half inch to move them out of the way . two people need one under the car pushing it up as the other stands over guiding it out a pulling that ac tank out of the way . that easy we a he'll of a lot easier then dropping ur motor two days lol thanks for showing a night mare lol

this is why i got mine so cheap. pain to work on. thank God for people who share on You Tube. Share the knowledge! The young man tried really hard to fix it for his mom. It sat for months after that. My determined dad and uncle fixed it, I cleaned it. Such a blessing. They got it off their property, I have a way to drive to work again. Guys who work on cars patiently make the best partners, ladies. Just FYI, feed them well when they walk in and don't complain they leave grease/dirt everywhere. You don't even know what they have been through unless you are out there with them through sleet, rain, snow...I am buying my brother new carpet runners and a portable heater.

So people are saying you can take out the alternator from the top after taking off the heat shield and moving the power steering hose and out she comes. Expect she don't come out. Any help would be appreciated. Got the alternator disconnected just need to be able to take out but it will not fit through from the top. Please any ideas shoot them my way

My best experience came from simply removing the axle, it falls out at this point. But I see you on the ground and I'm normally working on a lift and its a lot easy. Tried to remove alternator from the top on my 2002 pt didn't work for me could it be the 2001 and 2002 alternators are larger ? It was a pain removing fluid reservoir bottle then heat shield. Didn't know it came in two sections . One section got jammed had to bend to remove real night mire also removed power steering fluid and set line aside. Ended up removing alternator from the bottom by Haynes manual and Haynes video. Also Haynes video does not mention you also need to disconnect the power steering cooler but the manual does I did and alternator was removed easily. The bottom method was far better for me.

I had to remove the rear bolts of my car to properly put on the hubcap did someone put on wrong where it was covering the air nozzle and when I went to do the bolts I was like what Tha these were the most tight bolts on a car I don't know if it's because it's cheap material or what tight tight tight I had to literally put my foot on the for we to get the bolt on

Out the top is way easier i did one last night. You really need to take the adjustment bracket off ,you don't need to but it is a lot easier.

Man I got a job to do. My pt has bad cv's started looking around and I gotta replace both control arms, both cv's, both tie rod ends, both motor mounts, then I was like screw it, if I gotta do all that, I don't know how long that timing belt been on there, so that's gonna get done, then have to replace the water pump with it, then I might as well replace the leaky radiator, and now I'm thinking I might as well replace the altinater while its in my face cause I don't know how old it is and I don't want to do that whole process over again and it looks really old. Ugh it will take me a couple months of weekends to do all this.

Channel C.G.E. I don't think any of those problems where ever touched on that car. It's a 2003 touring with only one previous owner and I know it was in a minor accident in the past and they probably gave it up when those problems took over. I didn't know about all those front problems pt's had until After I bought it. Thing has had problems after problems. Changing the heater core was insane! But, looks like every fix on this thing is an insane job. Been watching your videos and others to see how things match up an all. Just good thing I stopped driving it before things broke and cost even more money. I refuse to pay for labor at a shop unless it is something way above what I can do, like rebuilds of engine and transmission. It gets into those areas, I'm not touching it lol everything else, I think I got the skills to tackle it as long as I have good visuals like you and others I've see on here. Forums have helped a lot with many issues, but really need those visuals for harder jobs. So thank you for all your hard work making these videos to help people like me.

If you Loosen up the 3 subframe bolts jack up the engine a little bit and pry the engine forward you can sneak it out, it'll be tight but it definitely works, Boss told me to take out the Drive axle and balljoint to get it off pffff, you don't need to do that

oooh, I would STRONGLY recommend going back in and fixing the ground strap. Sooo many problems come up with the PT Cruiser because of broken and disconnected grounds all over the vehicle. Thanks for the video. I'll need to keep this knowledge in case I have to replace the alternator but hey, once you've done a TB/WP on this car, lifting and lowering the engine is second nature (finished my TB/WP ordeal after 30 hours last week).

Hello!! Hmm that is odd. Maybe (if you can even see down in there I don't remember lol) check to see if one of the pulleys are misaligned (like, not even with each other). Also, if you are talking about the alternator belt, it is possible to over-tighten it and it will burn out fairly quickly. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, good luck!!

hey an easier way is to just take out the cv shaft on it, that way you dont have to mess with the motor, unless you have the tools to drop it.....

I guess it depends on if you want to spend the time on it. If you want to get the car up and running quickly then it’s definitely worth the $630. If you’re willing to take the time to break a few knuckles and save the $, then its worth it too. Good luck!!

There is a workaround to all this messing around with the engine or the axle: If your A/C doesn't work anymore and you don't care about that, pull all the hoses out including the receiver/dryer. This will enable you to remove and reinstall the alternator from above. I did it with my 01 Cruiser and it was much easier.

It works for the normally aspirated PTs but I'm not so sure about the turbos. My comment above applies to the NA PTs. I also own a 04 GT 5-speed which still has it's original alternator and the A/C still works. Time will tell.

enjoyed video. but can you like edit with arrows instead of zooming in and out? i really appreciate the upload. but, i just watch videos and have to relay info to my elderly dad. he just bought my pt cruiser 2002, 177k miles for $500...but he had to install alternator and alternator belt? he said he went in from the top and had to grind it down. cant wait to share with dad the way you did it. i also just bought new tool set with my brother from sears. cant wait to share with dad. he always moans about my crappy tools. enjoyed your video immensely. maybe for ladies, show you doing the work instead of what you plan on doing and then, boom, you got it done,,,i would like to actually see everything. you could keep videos for the experienced..then, offset videos for beginners. more views for you! thanks

so instead of taking the altornator out form the bottom there's more then enough space to pull it out from the top sure u still have to remove bolts from the bottom but y take all motor mounts off its a waste of time and unnecessary

I paid cash for a 2004 PT with about 104,000 miles. After 12-18 months it became obvious that the thing would start needing routine repairs (alternator, water pump, head cover gaskets) that on most cars are quite easy for a DIYer like myself to do. I became disabled so I set out to find an affordable mechanic to work on it for me. 2 mechanics refused to even look at it, while one freely admitted that he would do the work at a 300% markup (over normal costs) just in order to make the frustration worth his while. I finally just got rid of the thing because if something that is historically extremely simple such as an alternator swap becomes a massively expensive deal, why bother? I was looking at (in total) spending $6000.00 just to keep the thing going for a while before the next big batch of problems arose. Then the head gasket started slowly going out at 115,000 miles. In a nutshell, it was rather shocking to see so many different things start failing all at once

Camera work needs to be improved-a lot of point the camera at something and saying it needs to be removed? WTF needs to be removed? Camera won't focus, bad camera angle.

Yeah, this was a very old video of mine and I'm still shocked it's getting the views it is lol. Work Smarter not Harder. Scrap this video, pull alternator through top of engine. Yes it will come out

The way I did it was tie a rope through one of the bolt holes for leverage and then trim the metal flashing on the back of the engine and once you do that it will come right out.
