Hi Ben, great video, watched it 2 or 3 times and learnt a lot. So much so that it gave me the confidence to tackle a 7 metre length of featherboard fencing including all the concreting of posts and fitting the rails and gravel boards etc. Wish I could post a picture of the finished fence, I think it looks the dogs. All down to you and this video so thanks again. 👍🏻

Great job... btw... any reason for not blackjacking the posts below ground level to just above to help against wood rotting? Also why didnt the owner want the good side facing in... and why no capping rail to finish it off? Did you fill the holes with stones/gravel to aid drainage or is that pointless?

Thanks painting the post again is an added extra. I do recommend it but the customer was selling the house and did not want to spend the extra money. Even I advised to do it. Also I prefer the post and rail side of the fence. It looks much better and you can do more with it, that was in keeping with the rest of the houses also capping on top of the feather boards that is extra as well not a necessity in this country.

Hi Ben. Great video! I'm looking to build my first feather edged fence in the back garden. I can you were using posts with arris rail grooves already. I can't seem to find any of them anywhere! Are you able to suggest a site or shop where I could pick some of these up? Using the posts with the arris rail grooves already cut in looks so much neater! Great content mate :)

Hi Ben. Great video. I did a job recently like this but 1st time I ever did a fence ( my own property) But i was intrigued by those notches in the fence post and the rails you used. I'd just screwed in batons to the outside edge of regular fence posts then featherboards onto that. Could you please write the proper names of the rails, posts and the end supporting posts you used on the end existing posts please? Edit: I have found all that out! One thing though...how do you ensure the faces of the row of fence posts are all I'm line to ensure the batons or rails are all flush and doesn't kink? Thank you
@bstrippy1664
@bstrippy1664 Жыл бұрын
Do you two end posts first and the pull a string line from end to end (can do string line to and bottom) then when Tony set the posts in between just make sure they are up to the string line and level before you concrete them in.

Hi Ben, Thank you for your video. It is just what I need to replace some featherboard fencing. I currently have 1900 mm high, 100 mm x 100 mm timber posts already cemented into the ground. I would like extend them so I can affix 2400 mm featherboards. Do you have advice, or could you do a video, to show how to join another section of 100 mm x 100 mm timber post to the current ones, to extend the current height? Obviously I would want the new, combined taller posts to be strong so they don't suffer from wind, but I would also like the joins to be as invisible as possible as they will be seen from the street. Happy to donate to the drinks' fund if you can advise! Thank you.
@bstrippy1664
@bstrippy1664 Жыл бұрын
You are only going up another 500mm so I would just say screw 4x2 timbers to the side of the posts rather than trying to extend the existing post.. not as nice to look at depending on the rail side you look at but the feather board side will look fine.
@rossstevenson2532

@@bstrippy1664 Do you think that a half-lap joint would be too difficult (given I cannot remove the half of the post that is already cemented) or not strong enough?

@@bstrippy1664 you always seem to get your amount of boards needed spot on, if I was to do a 7mt long fence how many boards would I need, if the boards are 150mm wide, thanks for your time
@bstrippy1664
@bstrippy1664 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesbriggs4443 it’s just years of doing it I suppose… a 150mm board will cover a 125mm gap (with 25mm overlap) so 70 boards will guarantee you to do the job, but you save a board every 4 boards because of the overlap so I reckon around 56 boards but always buy more than you need as you can keep them for future jobs and to cover any damaged ones you may have or any mistakes you may make.
